Listening To My Clock

by T.E. Loper

  One … Two … Three … Four …

A lazy lake in winter yawns
into the distant trees.
The snow is there,
like so much spilled cream.
Here, I drink in the warmth of its beauty.

One … Two … Three … Four …

Coffee poured into a mug:
a steaming, black mirror
reflecting only the brightest objects.
I stir the Muse—
where am I?

One … Two … Three …  Four …

Poor, wretched, rank, reeking,
shriveled up like spiders
in uncaring cold,
far beyond my life,

One … Two … Three … Four

people starved to death alone.

One … Two … Three … Four …

Free-style poem: human suffering writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
The topic for this contest is: Human suffering.

It's hard to be human. Alone, we can do a little to end suffering. Organized groups can do more. But a civilized society can do the most good through government. Isn't that really the purpose of government? Where are we failing? Unfortunately, we fail because we ARE human. And so I simply sit and write, drink coffee, and listen to the ticking of my clock. God forgive us.
