Torgny Segerstedt

by Dolly'sPoems

He warned, and published words of truth,
his fears were realised in time;
he knew the arm of Nazi youth
was filled with hateful deeds of crime.

When many peaceful men appeased,
he wrote of terror; warring threat.
as he who dines with this disease,
will be forever in its debt.

Remaining neutral saved their hide,
escaped invasion in the war;
defending would have left them tied,
the battle that we all deplored.

Torgny Karl Segerstedt (1876-1945) was a Swedish professor and scholar who became editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Goteborgs Handels- och Sjofartstidning. He is remembered for his anti-Nazi campaign with efforts to alert the public of the threat of Fascism in the 1930s. His fears proved poignant and true. He crossed swords with Government with his strong views published in his newspaper which became political as the Swedes were under threat from both the Russians and the Germans simultaneously during World War II.
