Lights Go Out

by HarryT

The smell of cool rain
“It’ll be good for the grass
Mom says, closing the window
Distant roll of a thunderstorm
Lightning scratches the sky
Western winds wail
Tree limbs dance
Lines snap
Sparks shower
Branches tumble
Lights go out
Susie and I scream

Mom lights a candle
Places it on the kitchen table…
“Come, sit, don’t be frighten,” she says
“It’s only the angels bowling again”
