The Tower Ravens

by Aussie

Black wings of silk
Strong beaks protect
Ravens ancient ilk
The Tower elect

The Merry Monarch
Superstitious King
Gave the order under the arch
Ravens always on Tower sing

Round the ramparts they do see
Tourists clicking photos generously
Not tethered walking free
Tower ravens show off never fly heavenly

Once a raven flew away
Alone his flight for sightseeing
Returned the very next day
Food and friends, he loved their being

The ravens guard the Tower of London. Charles the 11 known as the Merry Monarch reigned 1660 - 1685. He instigated the use of six ravens to guard the Tower. There have been six ravens there ever since. It was said, Charles believed if the ravens left, that London would fall.
