My Faith Calms the Storm

by Leann DS

I Sleep.
Whistling wind blows,
Leaves swirl and scatter round,
Sweet, pungent ozone fills the air.
The ground vibrates with nearby rumbling.
Black clouds embossed on midnight sky
Bright flashes fill the night.
Storm approaches.
I dream.
Pines bend and break.
Angry wind barges through,
Throwing anything in its reach
Slap, push, scream! Temper tantrum turns to rage,
Leaving destruction in its wake.
Anger out of control!
Spent, it idles.
I wake.
Body shivers.
Shoulders tense and head bows.
Fear pours from my eyes and I sob.
Hands tremble, temples throb, stomach lurches.
Swallowing becomes difficult.
Despair washes o'er me.
Who can help them?
I pray.
Jesus, my Lord,
Hold them close. Give them strength.
Build them a hedge of protection.
Cradle them with your love and compassion.
Surround them with the pure white light
Of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, calm the storm.
I know.
Jesus hears me.
The sky's floodgates are closed.
The sobbing Heaven ceased to cry.
He has rebuked the stormy, surging waves.
My God will guard their hearts and minds.
I know that You hear me.
Thank You, Jesus.
I sleep.

Faith Poetry Contest contest entry

I have a loved one Who is in an abusive, controlling marriage. Things have been very turbulent lately, and I fear for her well being as well as the emotional consequences the relationship will have on the two children in the home. The other night, I had a nightmare about this family. The above poem represents the experience I had from the time I went to sleep, through the dream, through my anxiety, and how my faith in Jesus Christ brought me calm and serenity so that I could go back to sleep.

They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, â??Master, Master, we are perishing!â?? And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.

Matthew 8:27

Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained;

Psalm 107:29

â??Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Mathew 7:7

Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.

Job 33:26

Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 14:14

And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

Romans 10:12

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
He caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired haven.

Matthew 6:6-8

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
