As a young woman, admitting failure was nearly impossible

Coming of Age

by Lyn Peters

How liberating
to have reached an age
when the thought of failure
no longer frightens me.
Decades of experience
in missteps and mistakes
has taught me there is no shame
in inflicting on myself
the unintentional pain of failure.
The shame is in
refusing to acknowledge wrongdoing
and take steps to right the wrong.
How liberating
to have come of age.
