Old Pirate Recipe

French Cookie

by hager

Me ship lay at anchor far within a treasured trove,
of where dolphins play, within a mermaids cove.

We fly the Jolly Rodger with Pride,
bringing fear to the other side.
Sailing with Thirty-One guns aboard and all hands have scars and all hands have swords.
Readied. Steadied, built for war, mess with me and you be no more.

“Feed us, feed us, Captain Blue,
something good to eat that’s brand new.
Yes, something to sink what’s left of my teeth into.
And it had better not swim. Yes, no swimming.
We hate fish, makes us sick even with lemon.

It best have four legs and moo," shouts and screams a collection
of individuals from my mutinous crew.

After sinking and gathering loot,
gold Doubloons, ta boot,

from a doomed Spanish Galleon,
then riding waves for days,
on the back of a wild Stallion.

And having eaten everything in sight,
this crew is fit to be tied
on a Saturday night.

They’re a scary lot by any measures
and have begun to practice eating again,
by chewing on Spanish leather.

Chickens are gone except for feathers.
Rum’s dried up under tropical weather.

Our fine wench of a French Cookie, Playfully performs her daily duties.
She is cute, as she runs around deck in her birthday suit,
plus this woman can really, really cook,
as we pull into our own home port, nook.

In stormy weather
She buoys, pleasing the crew,
Bending, all eyes view

So on this fine Fall day with peaceful swells,
before the cold waves of Winter and the Sea Witch wails,
Cookie rings and strikes the ships bell, summoning crew.
Announcing to all her new menu.

"Me mates, what hastens me call?
I be not the type to mix up words in a bowl or incite a brawl."

She pauses licking her lips, as moisture envelops her fingertips.

"What I want is one of them thar Sloppy Joes, on a bun. Get it for me and you have me all, for a Fortnite of fun."

Men's teeth began to chatter like beavers in the Petrified Forest,
and hoots and howls and synchronized step became,
like a mighty Broadway Chorus.

So I be off to market leaving the ship and misfit crew.
Who, by the way, plan daily my demise, night time too.
And they do cartwheels across the deck under sunny skies,
amongst themselves for grades, reviews and sighs.

They're Exceptionally Talented, to my surprise.
Off the waters of Barbados, where the Cuckoos fly.

Cookie rings the bell again, alerting all the men.

"Rains off in the distance,
yet Polly the parrot looks so innocent.
But she's a he, a peeping-tom,
been watching Me dress passed my frillies and beyond.
So catch that bird and wring his neck
And I'll give the whole crew
My very best Parrot Stew yet!"

Summer trees, breeze
pass by my walking mile, next to me the Caribbean Sea.
Flamingos strut and stride,
legs bent backwards, in some posed Yoga Down-Dog slide.

So I made it back to ship just in time,
Rowing like a crazy man sitting on a cactus spine,
nicking a few cases of Rum,
Practising my thievery just for fun.

"Here you go Cookie. That's everything on the list. Now tell us how it's done down to the very last kiss."

"Stir Fifty-Two Pounds Organic Beef, per usual, till brown.
In a Huge Round Pot avoiding a reef not hitting the ground.
Spoon Two half-cups shark oil, and a bit of sand or in a pinch use soil.
40 spoons onions, then Worcestershire sauce till browned the colour of Grunion.
Then 20 of each, ketchup sauce, mustard, topping off with Watercress or Irish moss.
Brown sugar 20 spoons, 20 cups beef broth or liquid prunes.
Combine all, boil till thick froth moves or after 2 hours of more dancing and cartwheel reviews."

Serve and then spoon onto buns.
Please catch Polly so we all can have fun
