Hoofbeats come drumming through the night

Galloping

by Cass Carlton

Galloping! Galloping!
Hark oh Hark
Who is it galloping
Through the dark
Who are these horsemen in unseen flight
Galloping, galloping through the night

Nearer and nearer
The hoofbeats come
Filling with terror
Each lonely home
Never they slacken or lessen their flight
Galloping, galloping through the night.

Loudly how loudly
The sounds now beat
What fearful message
Will Fate repeat
Begone you horsemen and on your way
Galloping, galloping, 'til break of day.

Now they have gone
And all is still
Their hooves are thundering
O'er dale and hill
Someone is waiting to hear their plight
Galloping, galloping through the night.

This piece was once a song learned in my year five class in 1950. It was pretty ordinary until our teacher painted the picture of people huddled together listening as the hoof beats drew inexorably nearer. Praying that the sound wouldn't falter and change as they approached the gate down on the road. No-one knew what bad news might travel on the back of a swift horse, so such sounds late at night usually presaged calamity of some kind. I can recall the first two verses, but the second two are my own invention. They follow the storyline of the song (roughly) but it isn't exactly how I remember it. It is an intriguing piece I thought I'd share. Enjoy`` cheers Cass
