To Pump, or Not To Pump?

by Elizabeth Emerald

Public Service Announcement: Don't feel obliged to review for two cents

Refresher course in promotion costs:

The base cost to "promote" a piece with a "treasure chest" is $9.95. For stories and scripts, it buys four days on the list; payout: 52 cents. For poems, it buys three days on the list; payout: 32 cents.

Pumps cost $2.95 per. A pump raises the payout by 5 cents; with six pumps, your piece offers a payout of 82 cents, after which each pump raises the payout by only 2 cents. (After $1.00, the payout increases by a penny per pump; for the chart toppers, money ain't so funny anymore. Not gonna go there.)

I've learned from sad experience not to bother pumping a story unless I have at least six pumps:
$17.70 (added to $9.95) = $27.65 total cost.

I've learned from even sadder experience not to bother pumping a script unless I have at least ten pumps in order to offer a 90 cent payout:
$29.50 (added to $9.95) = $39.45 total cost.

Given the respective payouts of .82 and .90, I average four reviews; thus, each review costs me:

($27.65 / 4) = $6.91 for a story
($39.45 / 4) = $9.86 for a script

If I don't pump at all, I'll get one or two reviews for a story and one review for a script; thus each review costs me:

$9.95 /1.5 = $6.33 for a story
$9.95 /1    = $9.95 for a script.

Answer to title question: It's a toss-up.

I encourage you to share your experience.

Especially as regards promotions of poems, in which I am not "well-versed." (Given that I am metaphorically-challenged and hopelessly literal-minded, as a "poet" I aspire to amateur status.)
