Children learn from their surroundings

Words

by Helena Frances

I said a word
and Mom got mad

It was a word I'd heard
from my own Dad

Now I know something new --
Grownups are really confusing

Teaching us not to do
what they are choosing

Words have power --
be aware of that

They can be used to shower
encouragement, or crush you flat

So now I'll choose words
which include, and are kind

I won't repeat what I heard;
I'll pick words that bring peace of mind.
