a Petrarchan Sonnet

Petrarchan Symphony

by Sugarray77

A flailing storm whips on my rattling pane
   and puts me in an itchy, restless mood.
   I've sought the tranquil warmth of solitude
to ease the pensiveness of inner strain,
brought on by rolling peals of drumming rain.
   I seek a respite in an interlude;
   soft, flowing music's gift of quietude.
But, vestiges of tension still remain.
Shall I compete with jagged, crashing rounds
   by playing dreamy tunes from Brahms or Bach?
The air is swirling, twirling with new sounds,
   and muffled chimes from old grandfather clock.
Amidst the raging storms cacophony,
I find my haven in a symphony

The FS Sonnet class studied the Petrarchan sonnet style which uses a rhyme scheme of ABBA ABBA then a sestet consisting of variable rhyme schemes using no more than three rhymes. I chose CDCD EE. Jim (Pantygynt), our instructor, rapped my knuckles for ending in a rhyming couplet. he said Italian sonnets do not do that... but, he also added that Petrarch broke every known rule at one time or another... hence, my nod to Petrarch. ;) LOL
