Ravens Carousing, Green River

by CrystieCookie999

They are hikers sans backpacks, food, or water,
supremely confident in their ability
to con or cute their way
into humans' vast stores of trail snacks,
tightly packed in clear, gleaming bags.
Other days, they are satisfied to sneak
into photo-bombing opportunities.
Juniper trees behind are scant camouflage
for such sheer bravado shining in their eyes,
which defines the way
they swoop, perch, or stall for time.
They mistake being present for being friendly.
The smallest children shy away or hold back,
open-mouthed at such shameless begging.
Young fawns may often be startled
by roughhousing of ravens, like dropping
black bombshells into a quiet, murky cove.
Squirrels and chipmunks also wince and retreat.
But big elk stags simply roll their eyes,
ignore sure-footed shenanigans
of those raucous ravens,
self-proclaimed preachers
of gaudy black pulchritude,
robbing eggs from other birds' nests,
scavenging behind wolf and coyote kills.
Still, ravens as symbols of war
remind humans how every noble act in war
is never as praiseworthy as talking things out,
as black backs speak louder than greenbacks,
loud and proud, face to face, beak to beak,
the way that all ravens, carousing, will always
most unmistakably speak.

Thanks to alaskapat for a picturesque photo/illustration of a raven.
I believe free verse poems can have a single random end rhyme. There is only sneak/beak/speak with the 'eak' sound.
There is a Green River in the State of Utah and also in the state of Wyoming, and probably a couple of other states in the United States of America.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
