What Do You See in That Tree?

by pome lover

What do you see when you look at that tree?

Is there an animal up in that tree?

Could there possibly be a giraffe in that tree?

No-o-o-o?  well, Okay, what else might we see?

Would there be an elephant up in that tree?

No-o-o, he’d break branches off, wouldn’t he?

(Besides, you know elephants can't climb a tree)

So, what do you think of a big old hoot owl?

Or maybe a furry, gray cat on the prowl?

An owl, you say? Well, you are right! Yes siree,

It’s very likely that up in that tree

You COULD find an owl just a-hootin’ away

BUT only at night time.  They sleep in the day.

And, also, you might find an old yellow cat

Or an upside down bat

Or a (ugh) scary rat

BUT… What would be even much better than that

Is if you saw a tiny wren singing a song

Or a bright red male cardinal, as he hops along

Saying, “tit-tit-tit-tit” when he talks to his mate

And sometimes he feeds her—now, isn’t that great?

He brings her a seed and puts it in her beak

And he does this a lot—from a window, I peek.

And sometimes, a mocking bird sings his song, too

There are so many birds, and I sure hope that you

Will get to see all of them, and name them, too.

And so now you have guessed, my sweet chickadee,

That mainly, what you’ll probably see in that tree is….

BIRDS!  You are right!

But there’s one other thing

That is such fun to watch, he will keep you laughing…

You guessed it. A squirrel. You certainly did.

Because you’re a very smart, wonderful kid!
