For the Love of Dog

by Lyn Peters

"Let's have a cuddle!"

Without fail, these words sent our 90-pound pit-bull, racing through the house to hurl himself onto the sofa to wait, grinning and panting, to be lavished with affection. Jack loved cuddles almost as much as he loved food.

He was a rescue and, as with all our shelter pets, his history was woefully incomplete. We did not know his age or his name. We did not know if he feared thunderstorms (he did), if he liked rain (he did not), or if he enjoyed car rides (always, unless we headed toward his Vet's office).

We knew he arrived at the shelter critically ill and that he suffered beatings and long-term abuse. Jack, who had every reason to distrust humans, held no grudge. He never met a stranger and he saw every new encounter as an opportunity to invite belly rubs and ear scratches.
The depth of his love, and his willingness to trust, was humbling. We gave him safe harbor and he gave us his all.

Our big, strong, stubborn pit bull, whose breed is so vilified, left an indelible mark on my heart. I will forever feel blessed to have had the opportunity to walk this world with our sweet boy.

I love you, Jack.

Let's have a cuddle!
