The year of the pandemic
unmasked global choices
of self-interest or selflessness

Awareness was a slow process:
what affects one person
eventually has an effect on all

Human nature, in its glory and failings
was exposed
joining some in hope, others in hate

New fears, new words
have entered our guest-free homes
and will linger

Leadership was required
but in some, found lacking--
many lives lost, even more in mourning

As we limp forward
tired but not defeated
towards renewed hope

We acknowledge our part
in daily divisions
and aspire to heal

2020 can't be undone ...
Here's to humanity in 2021
