The Phases of Love

Shapeshifting Love

What is Love? Contest Winner

At Fifteen
     Love glimmers ...
                 Sparkles like cherry lip gloss
                 Like polished pink nails
                 Like the Hope Diamond--rarer maybe
Like OMG, nobody's ever felt this way before!

At Twenty-five
     Love simmers ...
Like Ghirardelli chocolate slowly coming to boil
Finally, dripping in droplets over frigid ice cream
Stunning, awakening, melting into one another
Sweet Jesus, I've never felt this way before!

At Forty
     Love's thinner ...
The Fun House mirror reveals you skinny and tall
From running ragged; from sleeping, not dreaming
From giving kids what you can't spare--pieces of you
No time for "us." Will we ever feel that way again?

At Sixty-five

     Love shimmers ...
Like tremulous moonlight reflected off clouds
Like sunlight bouncing off slowly-moving waves
Like my eyes when Doctor says you'll live.

I know we're blessed to have this love ...
                This love that shapeshifted
                Over time but
                Never left

Writing Prompt
Write a free verse poem. Free verse is a form of poetry that does not necessarily follow to any specific meter patterns, rhyme, or any other pattern.
