Maybe we should let animals solve world problems.

Sammy and Oleg

by Cynthia Adams1

Why is it yer not black or brown
like bears in the Smokey?
I seen him once at Movie Town
with Chuck. He said: "He's hokey!"

How did ya get so yeller-white?
How do ya stay so clean?
Was it from a ter'ble fright
of somethin huge and mean?

Who are you, you tiny fluff
and why would you engage
in senseless, bland and boring guff
with a bear strapped in a cage?

Ya ain’t a bear seen ev’ry day
least not by mutts like me.
I can let ya out so ya can play
or I can let ya be.

Where would I go if I got out?
Russia is my home.
In this burg I have no clout.
I’m on my way to Nome.

You’re the only one who spoke to me
in all these many days.
You’ve got an angle, has to be...
something more than “play.”

Ya don’t trust no one, do ya bear?
I guess I understand.
If I was chained and brought to fairs
and lost the life I planned.

Let's sit a while and let’s pretend
ya knowed me all these years.
Then when ya leave, ya got a friend
and I got lesser fears.
