Dill's Atlantic Giant' Pumpkin

by Shirley McLain

Twelve-year-old Andy stood by his dad’s desk, pleading with him to help him begin a project. “Dad, if you’ll break up the ground for me, I’ll do everything else. I won’t bother you again, I promise.”

“Well, I can see I won’t get a minute’s peace until I do it. All right, let’s go find your spot, and I’ll get the ground broke for you.”
Andy was excited to watch his plants grow. Garden work was enjoyable for Andy. His Grandpa Addison taught him all about gardening, especially how to grow Dill's Atlantic Giant' Pumpkin Seeds. He germinated his monster pumpkin seeds and planted them.

I’m going to grow a world record pumpkin for my Grandpa. Maybe I can even make it to the Guinness Book of Records.

Andy planted two of the pumpkin plants. He fertilized and watered them and gave them everything needed to grow to world record status.
Andy did his research and found the biggest pumpkin ever grown weighed 2,624.6 pounds (Actual Guiness Record). His would-be bigger. He felt it inside.

Andy raised his giant pumpkin. Now it has to be certified at the truck scales

He and his dad arrived at the scales with Andy’s pumpkin. Finally, it’s my turn.

The truck pulled onto the scales. It took a full five minutes for the man to come out the door. He tried to hand the paper with the weight on it to John.

“Please, it’s my son’s pumpkin.”

The man turned around to find Andy behind him. “Here, son,” and handed Andy the paper.

Andy slowly opened it and read 2,625 pounds. “I have the world record for growing a pumpkin.”
Here’s to you, Grandpa, for everything you have taught me. We’re in the record books forever.
