Chapter 1 A
Rebeka Miller stood outside the gas station convenience store as she studied a distant cloud bank. Her dinging phone interrupted her weather concerns. She glanced at the phone and her lips pressed together as she grimaced at the number of text messages she'd received from her agent, Richard Stuart, and missed calls from her personal assistant, Amber Wilson. Rebeka finished gassing the car and then sat behind the steering wheel. She took a drink of water and used her left hand to rub her stomach. "I'd better contact Amber. She's worried."
She texted Amber: 'I'm taking a vacation. I'll contact you when I get to the hotel. Please don't worry. Don't tell anybody you've heard from me. I'll explain later.'
"I need to take US Highway 84 north. It looks like I'll be going straight into the storm. It'll only rain. This is Texas, after all." Rebeka stared out the windshield before she pressed the ignition button, and then checked to make sure her purse and computer bag were safely in the passenger seat. She reached over and pulled the seatbelt through their handles. "Just being safe. I'll catch up on my writing at the hotel. Lubbock should have a nice one. I'm maybe two hours out."
An hour and a half later, Rebeka's knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. Moisture welled in her eyes. "How did I get off Highway 84? Where am I? I'm on a two-lane, country road and lost in the middle of nowhere." A loud clash of thunder caused her to stiffen. "Between the wind and the rain, I can't see the road. I'd better park until the rain slows. But where?"
She searched the area to her right for a safe place to pull over. The car hydroplaned, "No!" and swerved into the left lane.
Both hands clutched the steering wheel, and her seat belt tightened on impact when she hit something. The car spun, crossed back into the right lane, then hit something else before it came to a stop. On impact the airbags inflated. Steam rose from the engine. Scared and unsure whether she should or could move, she remained still but moved her right hand enough to caress her stomach. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
*****
Dr. Tyler Butler rushed from the barn when he heard the crash. His part-time ranch hand, Peter Dawson followed. "What was that?"
Tyler pointed toward the road. "I think it came from that direction. We'd better check. Somebody might need help." Tyler adjusted his cowboy hat.
The two men climbed inside Tyler's pickup, and Peter commented, "Think there's an accident?"
"Probably. It's bad out here. The weather report said the temperature's going to drop. The wet roads could turn to ice by morning."
"Want me to go into Longhorn Creek and get Elizabeth and Lily?" asked Peter.
"Not necessary. After Missy's dentist's appointment, Aunt Beth stopped by her friend, Christina, for a visit. When she heard about the storm, she decided to spend the night. Those two are having a great time."
Peter chuckled. "I'm sure Lily's being spoilt rotten." He teased, "Who do you think they'll try to fix you up with this time?"
Tyler parked the pickup at the edge of his lane just inside the gate. "You'd think they'd get the hint, but they'll keep trying until I'm married off. I'm not sure there are any single females left in town." He pointed toward his smashed mailbox and scattered bricks that had once surrounded it. "There's our accident." He opened the pickup door. "Let's see how bad it is. From here the car appears pretty smashed up."
They neared the black BMW, and Tyler said, "The airbags inflated. Maybe that's a good sign. Let's pray the driver only has minor injuries."
Tyler walked to the driver's side door and peeked inside. "I'm here to help. It'll just be a little longer." He called to his buddy, "Pete, there's a female inside. She doesn't look too bad." He attempted to open the door. "Get the crowbar from the toolbox. The door won't budge."
Moments later, Peter handed Tyler the crowbar while he studied the door. "Think the car door hit the mailbox?"
Tyler brushed away a few twigs caught in crevices caused by the impact and then pointed across the road toward a large Cedar tree. "I think that's the door's culprit." He forced the crowbar into the side the door should open from. "Now to get this door open and free this young lady. I think the mailbox finished off the front-end."
It took a few attempts, before the door partially opened. Tyler handed Peter the crowbar and moved aside the airbags. "Don't move until I assess your injuries. Where does it hurt?"
Her right hand remained on her stomach. She used her left hand, wiped away moisture from her eyes and cheeks, and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I think I'm okay. There's really no pain."
Tyler did a swift evaluation and didn't see any blood. "Okay, I'll help you out. Go slow and lean on me. I'm sure you'll be sore and bruised tomorrow."
He assisted her as she stepped from the car. Once she stood, he pointed to his left sapphire blue eye. "Look into my eye. I need to check your dilation."
Rebeka became wobbly and fell against Tyler.
He caught her. "You're okay."
She held tight to his muscular arms. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm glad I was here." Tyler faced Peter. "I'm taking her to the ER. She's probably in shock and may have a concussion. Get a blanket from the pickup."
Tyler wrapped it around Rebeka. "Pete, before we leave, I'll take you back to the barn. Get the tractor and pull the car inside the fence."
Peter waited until Tyler helped Rebeka inside the pickup, before he climbed in.
After Tyler dropped Peter off, he drove up the lane but stopped when he noticed in the rearview mirror Peter wave his arms. "I wonder what that's about." He put the truck in reverse and backed up. Peter ran up to the pickup. Tyler lowered the window. "What's wrong?"
"My phone sent out an alert. The road between here and Longhorn Creek is flooded and there's reports lightning struck the bridge. You're not going to town anytime soon."
Tyler hit the steering wheel and then faced Rebeka. "It looks like you're stuck with me, and you don't even know my name." He offered his hand. "I'm Tyler Butler. You're?"
"Sir, I can't stay with you."
"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you don't have a choice." Thunder clamored. "This storm says you're staying. Let's get inside, and I'll do a more thorough exam." Terror shown in her eyes, so Tyler added, "After you introduce yourself."
He parked the pickup close to the house. "Don't move. I'll help you inside. You're not steady on your feet."
He half lifted her to the ground and then put his arm around her waist. "Put your weight against me. I don't want to chance you falling."
Before Rebeka leaned against Tyler, she attempted to walk, but stumbled, and then allowed him to help. He led her inside to the couch. "Have a seat, and I'll get my bag." He turned to leave.
"Mr. Butler, before you get anything, I can't stay. I appreciate everything you've already done, but I'm a single female." She pointed to a photograph on the end table. "I don't see your wife or daughter anywhere. I'm sure your wife won't want me staying alone with you. It's not right."
Tyler sat in a chair. "I see your point." He picked up the photo. "First, this is my sister, Lori and her daughter, Lily. I'm a bachelor. Lori died over a year ago in a car accident." He ran his finger over the photograph. "On a day very similar to today. I became guardian of her daughter, Lily. Aunt Beth helps me raise her. The storm trapped them in town. They're staying with a family friend."
"But it's still not right for me to remain alone with you."
"Unfortunately, you don't have a choice." He corrected himself. "We don't have a choice. I can promise you'll be safe." He glanced toward the den and stood. "I need to get my bag."
"What bag? What's it for?"
"I guess I didn't fully introduce myself. I'm Dr. Tyler Butler. I'm an ER doctor. I worked at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and oversaw the trauma center. When Lori passed, I moved back home, to Longhorn Creek, to raise my niece, Lily or Missy to me. I couldn't move the child to Dallas. She needed to remain in familiar surroundings." He took a few steps toward the den, then turned and faced her. "You still haven't given me your name. How should I address you?"
A loud gasp escaped her lips, before she answered, "Rebeka Miller."
Tyler offered his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Miller."
Cautiously Rebeka accepted it. "I'm glad to meet you, Dr. Butler."
"Now we have the introductions out of the way." Tyler grinned and turned. "I'll get my bag."

A Serendipitous Meeting is a little different novel for a number of reasons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did as I wrote it. Tyler and Rebeka became close as they worked together through the forces that attempted to keep them apart. I have completed writing it and am off writing a new novel. I pray you enjoy reading this novel.
Chapter 1 is a really long chapter. I had hoped to post it two parts, but I need to do it in three parts. Today I'm posting part I and it's a little over 1500 words. As you already know, I made changes last minute, as I posted. Thank you for taking your time to read and write a review. |

Chapter 1 B
Tyler sat in a chair across from Rebeka and opened his black bag. He removed the stethoscope and draped it around his neck. “I don’t have a lot of equipment at home, so I’m going to rely on you answering questions.” Next, he removed a blood pressure cuff. “I’ll check your blood pressure and pulse.” He studied his watch as he did. “It’s a little high. Do you know what your normal reading is?”
“Around 115/65.”
He nodded. “Right now, it’s 183/97. I’m sure you were shaken by the accident. I’m going to listen to your heart and chest.” He stood and moved the stethoscope chest piece around. “Please take a deep breath and exhale slowly.”
Rebeka did.
“Good.” He moved to her back and listened. “Everything sounds good.” He took a retinoscope from his bag. “I’m checking your eyes.” After he did, he held up his right index finger. “Follow my finger with only your eyes. Don’t move your head.” He put away the instruments. “Other than the elevated blood pressure and pulse rate. It registered at about ninety-five. I’d say you’re doing all right. I want to check both in about an hour.”
He set his bag aside. “Just rest for now. I’ll make some coffee. How do you like yours?”
“How do you suggest?”
His eyes widened. “You don’t drink coffee?” When she shook her head, he asked, “Sorry, what would you like?”
“Water’s fine.”
“Do you drink tea?”
“I do.”
“Aunt Beth’s a tea drinker. Tea it is.” He walked toward the kitchen. “I’ll be right back.”
A few minutes later, Tyler returned with two cups of tea. “Tell me a little about yourself. Where you from?”
“Dallas.”
He grinned at her one-word answer. “What brought you to this area?”
“A vacation.”
Peter and a large, wet, hairy dog entered. “Ty, I brought your guest’s purse and a briefcase. I didn’t see any luggage or a coat.” He turned toward the door. “I need to check a few things in the barn before I head home.”
The dog shook and water flew everywhere.
“Zeke, no!” shouted Tyler. He stood and faced Rebeka. “I’ll be right back. I need to dry him off. Then you can tell me how one goes on vacation without luggage.”
Tyler returned with two large towels. “Zeke, get over here.” He waited while the golden retriever mix lumbered to him and sat. When he knelt beside the dog, Zeke licked his face. Tyler swiped at it. “You know I’m not a fan of dog kisses.” He dried the thick fur as much as possible, then stood and said to Rebeka, “As soon as I put these in the laundry room, you can explain why one would go on vacation without luggage.”
When he returned and sat, he said, “I’m anxious to hear this story. Since I’m sharing my home with you, I’d prefer the truth.”
“I had some problems today and decided to go for a drive and just kept driving.” Rebeka studied her hands, as she continued, “When I stopped for gas, I decided to take a vacation for a few days, but then the storm and the accident.”
“You’re running away?”
“I guess that’s one way to put it.”
“Are you running from a job, a boyfriend or husband, or the law?”
“Definitely not the law. I don’t have a boyfriend or husband. I’m an author, so I have a job.”
“Then what?”
“I discovered someone I trusted embezzled some money. I needed time to decide how to handle it.”
“Did you contact the police?”
“No. I wasn’t sure how to handle it.”
She’s soaking wet. Tyler studied her for a few moments. “I’m sorry. I’ve been a poor host. You’ve got to be cold. While you take a hot bath, I’ll contact Aunt Beth. I’m sure she has some clothes you can borrow.” He led Rebeka upstairs and pointed to a room down the hall and to the right. “While you’re here, that’ll be your room.” After a few more steps, he opened the door. “The bathroom.” He removed a few towels from a closet and handed them to her. “Maybe this will help. I’ll be in the den, if you need anything.”
*****
It didn’t take long for Tyler to get Elizabeth on FaceTime. “Aunt Beth, I’m sure you, Missy, and Christina are having a great time.”
Lily butted in, “Uncle Ty, we’re making chocolate chip cookies.”
“Bring me some, okay?”
“I’ll try, but they’re really good with hot chocolate.”
“You’re right. I need to talk with Aunt Beth. I’ll call later tonight, all right?” Once she returned the phone to Elizabeth, Tyler said, “A young lady’s car crashed into our mailbox.”
“Is she all right?”
“I attempted to take her to ER, but the road’s flooded. She doesn’t have any luggage and her clothes are wet. I’m wondering if she can borrow some.”
“Of course. Is she about my size?”
“No. She’s very petite and slender.”
“They’ll be too large. What’s her name?”
“Rebeka Miller. She says she’s an author.”
“No way! The Rebeka Miller?”
“That’s what she said. You know her?”
“She’s my favorite new author.” Elizabeth turned from the phone. “Christina, Rebeka Miller crashed into our mailbox and is in our home.”
Christina came to the phone and held up the back of a book. “Does she look like this?”
Tyler nodded. “That’s her. What does she write?”
Elizabeth answered, “Romcoms. Romance, clean Christian romance. She’s young. Something like twenty-two or twenty-three years old. She published her first book before she graduated college. The second book came out a few months ago. Both were immediately best sellers.”
“I guess she’s the real deal. Where can I find some clothes?”
“In my bottom dresser drawer are some I outgrew. It’s the smallest I have. They’ll still be too big. The sweats have ties so she can tighten them. Just have her help herself to whatever she needs.”
“Thank you. I’ll put her clothes in the dryer.”
“Wash them first. From what you said, it’s all she has.”
“It is. I’ll call later and say goodnight to Missy.”
“Wait. I have beef-vegetable stew in the crockpot and the makings for cornbread on the counter.”
“Don’t worry Aunt Beth, I have this. Talk with you later.”
*****
Tyler went to Elizabeth’s room and grabbed some sweat bottoms. He didn’t find any tops, so grabbed a couple flannel shirts from his closet. They’re too large, but at least they’re dry. He knocked on the bathroom door. “I laid some dry clothes outside the door. I’ll be in the kitchen when you’re done.” A few moments later, Tyler knocked on the bathroom door again. “I forgot to say, bring your wet clothes with you, and I’ll wash them. I’m leaving a T-shirt and some more clothes in the bedroom. You can use the T-shirt for PJ’s tonight.”
*****
Once she heard footsteps return down the stairs, she cracked open the door and grabbed the clothes. She held up the sweat bottoms and studied them. “I’ve never worn pants. Father would be so upset, but I don’t have a choice. I wonder if the females’ not wearing pants rule has exceptions. I hope so. I’ve broken so many rules.” Tears welled in her eyes. “Father will be so disappointed when he finds out.” She held the clothes to her chest and cried.

TODAY'S POST
Chapter One C
Tyler held an empty mixing bowl in his hand. He glanced up and watched Rebeka walk into the kitchen. "I hope the bath warmed you."
Zeke walked to her, and she petted the dog's head before she answered, "It did. Thank you."
Tyler came closer. "The sleeves cover your hands. Let me help with those. I knew everything would be too large, but it's all we have."
She hesitated, but allowed him to fold the sleeves, and almost whispered, "Thank you."
Over his shoulder as he walked back to the counter, Tyler said, "I'm getting ready to make cornbread. I hope you like it." When he heard Peter's voice call him, he turned his head. "Pete, I'm in the kitchen. I thought you went home."
"Can you come here? My boots are wet and muddy. I don't want to track all over the house."
"Sure." He grinned at Rebeka. "I'll be right back."
I might as well make myself useful. I can make cornbread. Rebeka measured the cornmeal.
*****
Tyler returned to the kitchen as Rebeka put the cornbread into the oven. She glanced at him. "I didn't know if you put sugar in your cornbread or not. Mother always did, so I do too. I hope it's all right."
"Since I've never made it before, I have no clue how Aunt Beth makes it. I'm sure it'll be great. You're a guest. You don't need to do anything."
"You're stuck with me for the night."
"Stop right there." Tyler held up his hand. "I'm not stuck with you. I didn't have to respond when I heard the crash. I could've chosen to ignore it. I made the decision to see if I could help and the decision to bring you into my home." He grinned. "Honestly my barn would've kept you warm and dry."
She studied the oven door. "You have a point."
"Glad we've cleared that up." A gust of wind banged against the window. Tyler walked over and peered out. "They're predicting the rain could turn to snow or ice tonight. It may be a few days before you can get to town. I don't have a clue how long it'll take for your car to be fixed, or even if it can."
"That's not hopeful."
"But realistic." He faced her. "You're welcome to stay as long as you need." He pointed to the door. "I promise not to send you to the barn."
"Don't make promises you can't keep. I might have an annoying habit you can't stand."
Tyler's eyes met hers. "Somehow I doubt it."
"I better check the cornbread." Rebeka went to the oven.
He nodded. Why's she so uncomfortable? Is it me or all men? Wish she'd tell me what's really going on. He opened a cupboard door. "I'll set the dining room table. Aunt Beth has beef-veggie stew in the crockpot."
"I'm sure it's good."
"She's a good cook. I think you'll like it."
*****
As they finished dinner, the lights flickered. Tyler took his last bite of cornbread. "This is good. I'm glad you added the sugar." The lights flickered again. "I need to go to the barn and check on Maude and Gabby."
"Who are they?"
"Maude's a mule." He shook his head. "I'd say the orneriest critter God ever created, but Gabby's right there with her."
"Is Gabby a mule too?"
"She's a Nanny goat, who for some reason keeps getting pregnant. I can't figure out how she does."
Rebeka's eyebrows rose. "You're a doctor and don't know how it happens. I'm pretty sure goats get pregnant the same way humans do."
"You're right." Tyler chuckled. "I guess I'd better explain. We don't own a Billy and the closest one is a few miles down the road. She doesn't go missing, so I can't figure out how they're getting together."
"Maybe they meet at a halfway point or there's a wild Billy running around."
"You may be on to something." Tyler stood when the lights flickered again. "That's number three. I have a feeling we'll lose electricity. I'd better hurry." He took two flashlights from a drawer and handed one to her. "In case it goes off before I return."
Rebeka watched him leave. I'd better do the dishes before there's no electricity.
*****
Tyler returned, stood in the kitchen doorway, and watched Rebeka at the sink. What's her story? Aunt Beth said she's in her early twenties. She doesn't dress like most young women. Most females her age would have four or five buttons undone on the shirt. She has it buttoned to her chin. No makeup or jewelry. She's old fashioned. Her brown hair was braided and pinned up. Now it's down and below her waist. I doubt it's ever been cut.
The lights went out. Tyler asked, "I hope you have the flashlight handy."
Rebeka stiffened. "It's you."
"Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
"I guess I'm jumpy." She hesitated. "I left the flashlight on the table."
"Stay put. I'll bring it to you. I know my way around better."
"Thank you."
As Tyler handed Rebeka the flashlight, the electricity returned. "Keep this handy. It may go out again."
"Good idea."
Tyler glanced around the kitchen. "You didn't need to do the dishes. I planned on doing them."
"I thought maybe they should be done before the electricity went out. You were busy." She turned toward the kitchen doorway. "I think I'll go to my room. I need to call my assistant, Amber, she's worried."
"I'm sure she is. If you need anything, I'll be in the den. I promised Missy I'd call and say goodnight." Tyler watched her walk up the stairs.
*****
In her room, Rebeka called her friend and assistant. She explained that Richard Stuart, her agent, had embezzled money from her checking account. She continued with why she left town, decided to take a vacation, and then the crash. "Please don't tell anybody where I'm at. I haven't decided how I'm going to handle this. I want Richard held accountable."
Amber agreed, "He should repay all your money. Any idea how much he embezzled?"
"No. I know how much is in my account now and it's not very much. I don't know how long it's been going on. Since I only spend money on necessities, I haven't kept track. Can you go back through my bank records starting when I received my first royalty check? I guess we start there."
"Of course. When will you be home?"
"I don't know. It's rained hard enough and there's been flash flooding. The road's closed. I guess lightning struck the bridge. I'm not sure if my car can be fixed. I might need to get another one, but I can't do anything until I can get to town. There's the money issue too. Right now, I'm practically broke."
"How's the family you're staying with?"
"Well, that's another story. Dr. Tyler Butler's a bachelor who's the guardian of his niece, Lily. His sister, her mother, was killed in a car accident. They live with his Aunt Beth. Both Lily and Aunt Beth were trapped in town when the storm hit."
"So, you're alone with a bachelor doctor? He took you in, so he's nice. Is he cute?"
"Probably."
"What do you mean probably? Either he is or he isn't."
"Sort of, but more importantly, can you imagine what Father would do if he knew I was alone with a man?"
"Good point." Amber giggled. "You have the plot for your next romance novel."
"Amber!" Rebeka took a deep breath. "I'll call tomorrow and see how you're coming with my financial records. If I don't call, it's because the electricity went out. I might not have a charged phone."
"So, you'll be alone in a dark house with a handsome doctor. It doesn't get any better."
Frustration could be heard in Rebeka's voice, "Goodnight, Amber."
Amber continued to giggle. "Goodnight."
*****
Rebeka walked through the living room to get a glass of water from the kitchen. From the dining room she heard Tyler's voice.
On a Zoom call, he read the bedtime story, Tomorrow I'll be Brave by Jessica Hische, and patiently showed Lily the pictures as they discussed them. He reminded her that even though today didn't go as planned, tomorrow is a new day.
When Tyler led Lily in her nighttime prayer, Rebeka bowed her head.
Father, we thank you for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light,
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the things we should,
To be kind to others and to be good.
In all we do, in work or play,
To grow more loving every day.
At the end of the prayer Rebeka said, "Amen."
Tyler turned. "Rebeka, you're welcome to join us. Missy, I'd like you to meet Rebeka Miller."
Lily smiled. "Hi, Miss Miller. Uncle Ty said you're staying with us. I hope you're still there when the road's fixed."
Elizabeth joined them. "Ms. Miller, I'm a huge fan. I've read both your books. I hope I get to meet you."
Tyler frowned. "Ladies, this isn't getting Missy to bed. We'll have plenty of time to talk later."
"I'm happy to meet both of you," said Rebeka. "I'm sorry, I interrupted everything. I just came to get a drink. I'm sure we'll be able to visit later." She went into the kitchen.
*****
Before Tyler turned off the computer, Lily said, "Uncle Ty, she's really pretty, don't you think?"
"I'll talk with you tomorrow." He gave a pretend kiss. "There's your goodnight kiss. I'm turning off the computer."
When Tyler entered the kitchen, Rebeka set her glass down. "Sorry, I upset Lily's bedtime routine."
He grinned. "If a fly flew by, it would upset her routine. Missy's full of life. Calming down isn't one of her strong points, but she's great."
"I can tell. You're very good with her."
"I do the best I can. She's had more experience being a child than I have with raising one."
"You seemed to be a quick learner."
"Thank you." Tyler scanned the kitchen. "Did you get what you wanted?"
She picked up her water glass. "I came for this. I'd better go to the room you've supplied for me. Thank you, again." She turned and left.
Tyler's gaze followed her.

A bare-chested Tyler left his bedroom early Saturday morning. He rubbed his days' worth of razor stubble as he opened the bathroom door. In front of him stood a naked Rebeka as she dried her long brown hair.
She attempted to cover herself, as Tyler slammed shut the door. "Sorry. I'm not fully awake. I forgot we're sharing a bathroom. I'll use Aunt Beth's. Again, I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
No comment from the bathroom.
Tyler showered, dressed, made a pot of coffee, drank two cups, and had prepared breakfast before Rebeka entered the kitchen.
He watched her before he said, "I wondered if you were going to leave your room." She didn't respond, so he continued, "I'm sorry about earlier. I'll remember to knock from now on. I didn't think."
Rebeka visibly swallowed and studied her feet. "It was my fault. I should've locked the door," she almost whispered. "I didn't think about it."
He pointed to the kitchen table. "We'll eat in here instead of the dining room. Please have a seat. Breakfast is finished." He set a cup of hot water and a tea bag in front of her and plate filled with scrambled eggs, an English muffin, and turkey sausage links.
"Thank you."
"Now you're here, we have a problem." Her hands surrounded the cup, and he said, "Yesterday when I examined you, you neglected to tell me you're pregnant. Why?"
She covered her stomach with both hands. "How did you know?"
"You're far enough along you're showing. That means you're at least twelve weeks." Tyler took a drink of coffee.
"By my calculations I'm thirteen weeks."
"What does your doctor say?"
"I haven't seen a doctor."
Tyler slammed his cup down hard enough some coffee splashed out. He stood. "Sorry. Why not?" He reached for a towel.
"It's complicated."
He cleaned up the spilt coffee and then scanned the kitchen. "We have all day. There's nothing outside but ice, so we won't be interrupted. From the beginning would be nice."
"I got pregnant November tenth."
"How do you know the exact day? Most women don't." Tyler closed his eyes. "Was it your first time?"
She nodded. "Yes, and the only time."
He set his jaw. "What happened?"
"I'd been on a book tour on the east coast for a few days when the awards' committee for the romance publishers announced I'd won the new author of the year award. The award ceremony was held in New York City."
"You went?" When she nodded, he continued, "Did you go by yourself?"
She avoided eye contact. "No. My agent, Richard Stuart, was on the tour with me. He accompanied me to the ceremony."
Tyler got up, poured himself more coffee, and set the pot on the table. "Please continue. Were you two dating?"
"No." Rebeka's fingers tapped her cup. "After I received the award, the champagne flowed. He offered me a glass. I turned it down. I'd never drank alcohol before. My publisher was there with others. They encouraged me to have a glass, stating most writers never win this award, especially ones as young as me and with only two published books. They said one glass wouldn't hurt."
"They got you drunk and took advantage."
"I agreed to one glass. I drank part of it and started feeling funny. Richard offered to help me to my room. We'd worked together for a while, so I thought it'd be okay."
"Were you raped?"
"Not really. We kissed at the door. I'd never been kissed before."
"That's hard to believe."
"I was raised by very traditional parents. I went to a private strict small church school in our private religious community. The school only has five classrooms. Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade are together. Third and fourth are together. The fifth and sixth and so on until eighth grade." She took a sip of tea.
"I see. What happens with the upper grades?" asked Tyler.
"Children normally don't go past the eighth grade. The boys start a trade. Normally what their fathers do. The girls learn to become homemakers. I borrowed books from the teachers and educated myself." Rebeka fingered her cup. "I had to hide them from Father."
Tyler downed his coffee, poured another cup, and then took a sip. "I'm sure you had boyfriends."
"I'm skinny and plain." She paused. "Men aren't interested in me."
"That's not true."
"An example: when you opened the bathroom door, the only thing you noticed was a baby bump."
Tyler rubbed his forehead. "First, I'm a doctor. I look for certain things. Second, I'm one of those guys who agree with Bob Marley when he said, 'The most beautiful curve on a woman's body is her smile.' I've never seen your smile. I'd like to. I bet it's beautiful. I can guess what happened next but continue."
"He helped me inside my room. He kissed me again, and you can figure out the rest."
"I understand. What does this scumbag say about the baby and why haven't you seen a doctor. Prenatal care's important?"
"Richard doesn't know about the baby."
Rebeka flinched when Tyler clenched his jaw. "Sorry. I don't like it when men take advantage of women." He took a sip of coffee. "Why haven't you told him?"
"Everything kind of goes together. Since my novels became best sellers, my life has become public knowledge. My father was already upset because I went to college and then moved to Dallas. Now I write romance novels. He threatened to disown me. Since I'm pregnant and single, I'll be excommunicated. Father's the pastor. Women are supposed to marry young, have babies, and be homemakers."
Tyler nodded. "It's all starting to make sense. But you need to tell the baby's father. He might do the right thing."
"About a month ago, I went to his office to tell him, but he was talking to his latest girlfriend, and it sounded like their relationship was serious. I chickened out."
"I understand. But the doctor?"
"I didn't want to use my insurance because he's my agent and would see the insurance claims. Yesterday, I made a doctor's appointment and went to the bank to withdraw the money for payment. I discovered I didn't have very much money. I inquired what had happened to it and found out Richard has been withdrawing it. I didn't know what to do and started driving."
"That's how you ended up on my doorstep."
Tears welled in her eyes. "I'm sorry."
He reached over and covered her hand with his. "I'm glad you did. I have some ideas that might help. My best friend's a lawyer in Dallas. If you want, we can contact him. I'm sure he'll have suggestions."
"I'd like that."
"Before we do, there are a few things that need to happen first. I need to do another exam and make sure the impact from the airbags didn't cause any damage. I know they've caused bruises. I need to check the baby and want to recheck your blood pressure. Although it went down a little yesterday, I wasn't aware of the baby. I need to keep a closer eye on it." Tyler glanced at the dishes. "Rest while I clean up. The stress of sharing this could cause your blood pressure to spike." He stood and then held her chair. "I think the recliner has your name on it. I'll escort you to it."
Rebeka stood but avoided eye contact. "You're being very cautious."
"I'm a doctor. That's what I do." He held out his arm for her to take, but she didn't. "After I examine you, we'll call Roger."
*****
Tyler finished cleaning the kitchen, entered the living room, and noticed Rebeka had moved from the recliner. She'd fallen asleep on the couch. Zeke lay on the floor beside her. He covered her with an Afghan. "I'll check on the barn animals. Maybe you'll be awake when I return."
*****
Tyler opened the door, heard a woman's voice, and it wasn't Rebeka's.
"Rebeka, I researched your host," said Amber. "He's handsome, rich, and Dallas' most eligible bachelor. The tabloid's say he's a super nice guy. He doesn't attend wild parties. He's only been seen at theater events, things like that. And he's hot."
"I'm not interested in a relationship. My life's a mess right now. Besides, why would a most eligible bachelor be interested in somebody like me? I'm plain Jane."
"I've seen pictures of this man. He's a hunk among hunks. Those sapphire blue sparkly eyes melt hearts, even looking at his photo. His coal black hair highlights those eyes. Are they as sensual in person?"

TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 2 B
Tyler walked up behind Rebeka and bent so he could be seen on the laptop screen. "Hello. Do we know each other?"
Rebeka's hands covered her face, as she whispered, "Tell me this isn't happening."
"Yep, it is." Tyler chuckled. "Please introduce me to your friend."
"Tyler, this is my assistant, Amber Wilson."
"Nice to meet you, Ms. Wilson."
"Please call me Amber. You're Dr. Sparkly Eyes, aren't you?"
"I am."
"I need to go." Rebeka released a deep breath. "Goodbye, Amber." She clicked off the computer and closed her eyes. "Tyler, I'm sorry. Amber's my assistant and a good friend, but..."
"Don't worry about it." Tyler grinned. "I've seen those articles. I don't pay attention to them." He paused. "I guess people like Amber do." His eyes met hers. "Did this raise your blood pressure?"
"I think maybe I need to go," she stood, turned to leave, and whispered, "to my room."
He took her hand. "You're not going to hide in your room or anywhere else. Sit on the couch while I get my bag."
Tyler returned with his bag and watched as she rubbed her arms.
Rebeka avoided eye contact, but said, "I didn't ask Amber to find information on you. All I asked her to do was get my financial records together."
"I've already figured that out, it's not who you are." Tyler motioned to the couch. "Please lie down. I want to see if I can hear the baby's heartbeat." He stood beside her.
"Really?" she asked as she laid back.
"Yes." Tyler placed his hand on her stomach. "I need you to raise the shirt, so I can measure your baby bump."
She raised her shirt less than an inch.
"I know this is difficult, but I need it higher." He paused. "Let me raise it. I won't expose more than necessary." He studied her baby bump. "I'm lowering the pants a little." When she gasped, he added, "It'll be all right."
Once Tyler had her clothes positioned, he pressed against her lower stomach. When he was satisfied, he used a tape measure and measured from the top of her pubic bone to the top of her growing stomach, where her uterus ended. He wrote it down. "Your doctor will need this information to make sure the baby's growing. Now for the heartbeat."
Silence filled the room as Tyler moved the stethoscope around her abdomen. He grinned at Rebeka. "Breathe."
She exhaled.
"I hear the heartbeat. I want to find the area it's the strongest." A few moments later Tyler removed the earpieces and held them out. "Want to hear your baby's heartbeat?"
"Can I?"
"Sure." Tyler held the chest piece against her stomach. "I don't want it to move."
Rebeka listened for a few moments and then smiled.
"I knew you'd have a beautiful smile. I'm glad I get to see it."
"That's really my baby?"
"It is."
"Thank you." Rebeka quickly adjusted her clothing.
"You're welcome. As soon as the weather cooperates, I'll set up a doctor's appointment. One of my friends is an OB/GYN. I think you'll like her."
"You don't need to do that. I'm sure she's busy."
"She is, but she owes me a few favors. I introduced her to her husband."
"Are you sure it's not a problem?"
"It's not." Tyler moved to the chair. "Want anything to drink or eat before I contact Roger?" When her eyes widened, he continued, "My lawyer friend."
She studied her hands. "Thank you, but I'm fine."
He stood and offered his hand. "Let's do this in the kitchen. You look like you could use some water."
Rebeka stood, but didn't take his hand, "Okay," and continued to the kitchen.
Tyler held her chair as she sat, grabbed her a glass of water and his laptop from the counter, and then pulled a chair closer to hers. "Roger's expecting us. I have the Zoom call set up."
"Thank you."
"Don't look so worried. Roger's friendly. I know he'll be able to help." Tyler paused. "You'll need to repeat the story."
"I told you. Can you tell him?"
"No. He needs to hear it from you. Besides I might get something wrong."
*****
Tyler introduced his best friend, Roger Whitmore to Rebeka and then encouraged her to share her story.
Rebeka took a sip of water before she explained what had happened as she had told Tyler.
"Your assistant, Amber is getting your financial records together, right?" asked Roger.
"She is. I asked her to do that yesterday. She doesn't have to go back too far. I received my first royalty check on March third of last year. It wasn't very large, but by the following month my novel had hit the best seller list. My second novel came out September eighth and within a week it became a best seller. We're only talking about a total of eleven months."
"Good. Can I contact Amber?" asked Roger.
"Yes."
After Rebeka gave Roger the contact information, Tyler teased, "Keep an eye on her. She's read all the tabloids."
Rebeka sighed. "I'm sorry about earlier. I'll talk with her. It won't happen again."
Roger winked. "I can handle eligible bachelorettes."
Both men grinned at Rebeka's crimson cheeks.
"Back to the situation at hand," continued Roger. "How do you want to handle the father of your baby? You and your child have rights."
"I'm a public person. I understand I can't keep my pregnancy hidden." Rebeka avoided looking at the computer screen. "If I don't name him as the father, can I keep him out of the picture?"
"You can if he doesn't claim any parental rights. By doing that you won't receive any financial support."
"I understand. I don't want any. I'd rather be on my own than have him anywhere around my baby or me. I doubt he cares."
"He's the same person who embezzled your money, correct?" asked Roger. When she nodded, he continued, "I understand. Monday morning, I'll contact Amber and set up an appointment."
"Thank you. I'll let her know to expect your call."
"When the weather settles down and I've talked with Amber, I'll come by and discuss this with you in person."
"Maybe I'll be back in Dallas by then."
"Ty mentioned your blood pressure is elevated. I'm afraid the stress of dealing with Stuart might cause problems. Right now, you need to take care of yourself and the baby. I know Ty will ensure that happens." He checked his phone. "I'll let you go and contact you after I speak with Amber."
"I'll tell Amber to expect your call."
"Good." Roger grinned. "Take care of that baby. Bye."
Tyler stood. "I think that went well, don't you?" He held her chair.
"Do you think Roger will get the desired results?" Rebeka glanced at him before she stood.
"I do. I've seen him in action. I think you'll be pleased."
She stood and faced the living room. "I'll call Amber and let her know he'll be calling." She exhaled. "I'll also..."
"Let them work it out. Roger is used to things like this happening." When her eyes widened, he continued, "Really, he is."

TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 2 C
Rebeka contacted Amber through a Zoom call. "How's everything in Dallas?"
"It's a beautiful sunny day. I can't believe it's completely different where you are, but that's Texas for you." Amber held up some papers. "I found all the royalty and bank statements. I also have a record of your canceled checks and withdrawals."
"Good. Monday a lawyer friend of Tyler's, Roger Whitmore, will contact you for as much information as you can give him. He'll want to meet with you."
"You're kidding, right? The Roger Whitmore will contact me?"
"You know him?"
"Of course not." Amber giggled. "But your sparkly eyes and Roger are number one and number two most eligible bachelors in Dallas. Probably all of Texas." Amber took a breath and fanned herself. "I can't believe you accidently stumbled onto them."
"Amber, you need to pause. They're just men who are nice enough to help me out of a difficult situation."
"You're right, but I can dream, can't I? You're living your next romance novel. It doesn't get any better than this." She held up her phone. "Here's a photo of your sparkly eyes and Roger together. Get a look at those muscles. You must admit they're hunks."
"Okay, they're attractive, but there's a lot more to people than their looks."
"True, but all indications are they're great guys too."
"If they're that great, they'd already be married."
"Or maybe they haven't met the right person."
Tyler entered the room. "I think Amber's right. Roger and I haven't met the right women yet. I believe they're out there." His eyes met Rebeka's. "Lunch is ready, when you are."
Amber laughed. "He even cooks."
He winked. "Not really cooked, only sandwiches and a salad."
"Still..."
"Bye Amber, I'll stay in touch." Rebeka turned off the computer. Tyler held her chair as she stood. "She's a great assistant."
"I'm sure she is. You two seem to get along well, even though you're completely opposite."
They walked to the kitchen together. "We are very different." Rebeka sat in the chair offered.
*****
After lunch, Rebeka went to her room and started writing. Amber may be right about my next novel. I could change some things, but there's a story here.
She started with an outline of her heroine and the hero. A few hours later she had a working timeline of events. She felt a few cramps and rubbed her stomach. I probably sat too long. Maybe a snack will help. She headed toward the kitchen by way of the bathroom.
*****
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she rushed into the kitchen. "Tyler!"
Tyler turned away from the lady who spoke to him through FaceTime. "Rebeka, what's wrong?" He hung up and went after Rebeka. He touched her arm as she retreated. "Rebeka?"
"I'm sorry I interrupted."
He used his thumb, dried her tears, and brushed a strand of hair from her cheek. "You didn't interrupt anything. I was trying to get rid of her. I'll explain later. Now, I want to know why you're crying."
He motioned for her to sit on the couch. When she did, he sat beside her. "Talk to me." When she remained quiet, he put his arms around her and guided her head to his broad chest. "Relax and tell me what's wrong. I can't read your mind."
A few moments later, Rebeka whispered, "I'm bleeding."
"Okay." Tyler closed his eyes and swallowed. "I need to examine you. Lay down, while I get my bag."
Tyler returned with his stethoscope around his neck. "First, I'll take your blood pressure and pulse. Next, I'll listen for the baby's heartbeat."
Silence continued as he completed these tasks. After he listened for the heartbeat, he offered, "I know you want to hear it."
He waited until he saw Rebeka's smile. "There's that beautiful smile again." He pulled a chair closer. "You want answers, but I don't have any. Only possibilities. Your blood pressure is elevated. That's not good. We'll need to work to get that down. There are a few other possibilities. I'd need to do a complete exam to diagnose it further."
She shook her head, whispered, "No." as fear entered her eyes.
He continued, "I don't have the proper equipment so there's no reason for that."
"Thank you."
"Now for a few possibilities: with vaginal bleeding there's a threat of a miscarriage, maybe an infection or Placenta Previa."
He stared at his stethoscope for a few moments then took out his phone, pressed a button, and waited until the call was answered. "Aunt Beth, later I'll call and explain, but where's your glucose testing kit you've never used?"
He hung up. "There's a possibility I want to check. I'll be right back." He left and then returned with the kit. He held a lancet. "Would you prick your finger? I want to check your glucose level."
She took the lancet, held it to her finger, and swallowed.
"Give it here. I'll do it. Look away." When she did, he pricked her finger and then squeezed a drop of blood onto the test strip.
"What's it say?"
"Unfortunately, what I suspected. Your glucose level is 165." His eyes met hers. "Little lady, your pregnancy is going to have challenges. I'll keep an eye on your blood pressure and your glucose level. As soon as possible, I'll get you an appointment with Heather."
He placed a call. Once this call was answered, he said, "Heather, good to hear your voice." He listened and then explained how he met Rebeka and then described her pregnancy. "She needs an appointment as soon as the roads clear."
When he hung up, he said, "I'm to keep monitoring you. If your blood pressure and/or glucose level continues to rise, we'll helicopter you to the hospital."
"Do you think that's necessary?"
He stretched his neck from side to side, as he stared at her. "I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't think it was."
"Okay."
"Right now, I want you to rest. I know your life is in an uproar, but for your baby's sake you need to relax. I'm confident Roger will handle Stuart."
Under her breath she said, "I wish he could handle Father."
"I wish he could too." He touched her arm. "Right now, rest. We'll worry about your dad later. He's not a threat at this moment. While you're here you have nothing to worry about." He stood. "Want the TV on?"
"I don't watch TV."
"Okay. What can I get you?"
"My laptop. I can write."
"Writing doesn't stress you?" When she indicated it didn't, he stood. "I'll be back with your laptop."
When he handed it to her, Rebeka said, "Thank you." Then paused. "Sorry about interrupting you and your girlfriend. I hope me being here won't cause problems."
"Don't worry about it. Elena and I dated a while back, but it wasn't going anywhere. I tried to give her gentle hints, but she didn't understand. When I got guardianship of Missy, she couldn't understand why I'd leave Dallas to raise my niece. I thought she'd leave me alone. She has relatives in town, and through small town gossip, she heard Missy's in town and hoped I'd return to my old job. I'm not. I'm happy here. I won't be going back to Dallas, and Missy will remain part of my life. It has nothing to do with you." He tilted his head. "Let's pretend we, Elena and I, were still together, and I helped you, if she didn't understand and felt threatened then we'd have a bigger problem called trust. It's part of being a doctor. I help people."
"Thank you."
He stood. "I'll be in my den if you need anything." He glanced at Zeke lying on the floor by her. "My dog likes you."
Rebeka reached down and petted his head. "I like him."
"Good to know. Holler if you need anything."
*****
Just after dinner, Tyler came in from checking the barn animals and began building a fire in the fireplace. "The wind's strong. I think the house is a little chilly. This should help."
He had a good fire built when the lights flickered. "I'll get the flashlights, just in case."
He returned and handed her one. "One of the hazards of country living." He took out his phone. "I'd better call Missy."
Just as he finished saying goodnight the lights went out. "It was nice of them to wait, wasn't it?"
"It was."
Tyler moved closer. "Okay, I know you're worried about the baby, your agent, and your dad. Is there anything else going on? I feel there is. I sensed you just tensed up. You need to be open and not keep things inside."
Rebeka remained quiet.
"I don't want to shine the flashlight in your face, but I'm also sensing tears. You need to talk. Are there tears?"
When she didn't answer, he reached over and touched her damp cheek. "Thought so." He paused a moment. "What brought these on?" Silence. "Rebeka, are you afraid of the dark?"
"No," came a whisper.
"Then what?" A minute of silence followed. "Amber told you I was in the tabloids. Are you afraid to be alone with me in the dark by a lit fireplace?"
"Hmm."
"You are. I'm a bachelor and for some strange reason got voted the most eligible bachelor in Dallas. I'm not a playboy. Never have been and never will be. You're safe with me. I took an oath to help people, that includes protecting them, even from me. I'm also a Christian. Understand?"
He moved closer. "Since you're crying, you're under stress. That's not good for the baby or you. I'm going to hold you and hope it helps. That's all I'm doing." He put his arms around her and guided her head to his chest. "Just relax. Take deep breaths. I want you to feel safe." He hummed 'When You Wish Upon a Star'.
When he felt her body relaxing, he said, "Good. It's helping." He paused a moment. "Sorry about the song. I sing it to Missy when she struggles sleeping." When their eyes met, he continued, "Tonight I want you to sleep down here where it's warm. The bedrooms are chilly." She inhaled deeply. "Don't worry. I'll be in my room. You've got to learn to trust me. We may be like this awhile."
My youngest son, Steven's birthday is March 17th. We'll leave for the Gulf Saturday and return Tuesday. I should be able to post on Sunday, but sometimes life happens, no matter how much we plan.
I want to thank YouTube for both of these videos.

TODAY'S POST:
Around 2:00 A.M. Sunday morning Tyler pulled a T-shirt over his head as he walked into the living room and stopped in mid-step. Why's Rebeka sleeping on the floor? Duh, because she's hugging Zeke. He stepped toward the fireplace and grabbed a few logs.
Once the logs were placed on the burning coals, he poked them until satisfied with their placement. He sat on the floor, turned, and faced Rebeka. Since she's hugging Zeke, I'd say she's more comfortable with him than me. He studied the situation a little longer. Of course, every man in her life has caused problems. Why would I be any different? Because I'm a nice guy.
He got up and went into the kitchen for a glass of water. I'm sure her dad loves her but disapproves of her lifestyle. It doesn't fit into his stringent views of womanhood. His fears have validation now she's unwed and pregnant. She'll face condemnation. I can't imagine her guilt.
Tyler opened and then shut the refrigerator. "I don't need a snack." Then he entered the living room, knelt close to Zeke, and petted him. "You came to our home when Missy needed you. Now Rebeka needs you. Keep up the good work, buddy," he whispered.
Tyler stood at the top of the stairs and studied Rebeka. "Working with Stuart for almost a year, you probably began to trust him. When you needed help, he took advantage while stealing your money. Why would you trust a stranger?" He turned toward his room. "I'm the one guy you can trust." He exhaled.
*****
After Rebeka showered and dressed, she came downstairs. Tyler took a sip of coffee. "'Morning. Ready for a cup of tea?"
"Yes, please." Rebeka glanced around the room. "But there's no electricity."
He pointed to the fireplace. "I have a heat source." He pointed toward his den. "There's a small gas-powered generator just outside the window. It's for keeping phones charged. You're welcome to use it. I'm sure you need to remain in contact with Amber. I need to be available in case the hospital needs me."
"Thank you. If you're needed, how would you get to town?"
"They'd send a helicopter. It'd need to be serious before that would happen."
"I guess you're really important."
He tilted his head and winked. "Some think so. I don't believe it. I'm just like everybody else."
Tyler poured hot water into a cup, added a tea bag, and offered it to her. "Please enjoy." Rebeka thanked him, and he said, "For breakfast I can do scrambled eggs or oatmeal." He grinned. "Or both." As she thought, he added, "I could do pancakes, but they're not good for your sugar level. I'll check your blood pressure and glucose before I start breakfast." He opened his black bag. "Ready?"
"Yes." Rebeka waited silently until Tyler was finished. "Any improvement?"
"A little, but not significant." He exhaled. "Any change in the spotting?"
"It was light, but still there."
Tyler nodded. "Young lady, you're restricted to rest and relaxation today." He entered the kitchen and over his shoulder said, "I'll get the ingredients. The fire's hot. It won't take long to cook. I'm sure you're hungry. I feel like eating eggs and oatmeal. How about you?"
"Sounds good."
*****
Rebeka picked at her food.
Tyler watched. "Once Aunt Beth returns, I'm sure the meals will improve."
"I'm sorry." Rebeka studied her fork. "It's good. It's that I'm not hungry."
"The baby needs nourishment."
"I know, but..."
"You need to quit worrying about things. Roger will handle your agent. When the weather settles down, you and I will handle your dad."
"You don't need to do that. Father's not your problem."
"I'm your doctor and he's affecting my patient."
"That's carrying doctor patient relations a little extreme."
"Maybe but it sounded good." Tyler reached over and picked up their plates. "I'll take care of these. Since there's no electricity, want to play a board game?" When her eyes widened, he asked, "Is there a problem with games?"
"I don't know how to play board games."
"You didn't play them as a child? I thought everybody did."
"Any games with dice or cards were forbidden."
"How about music, dancing, TV, or movies?"
"Those are touchy subjects. Some members will allow them to a point. In my home music was allowed only if it glorified God. TV and movies were forbidden. Dancing or mixed swimming aren't allowed either."
"I've noticed you don't wear jewelry or makeup."
"Makeup and jewelry, other than a wedding ring or wristwatch are forbidden."
"Your hair's very long. Is that another guideline?"
"Yes, women's hair isn't to be cut. Mine has only been trimmed. Men's hair is to be kept short."
"What about clothes?"
"No slacks because they immodestly reveal the feminine contours of upper legs, thighs, and hips."
"When I offered you sweatpants, why didn't you say something?"
"You were being nice. I didn't think I should complain. Besides I figured there wasn't anything else available."
"To be honest, it's all that was available. I'm sorry. I bet you're uncomfortable."
"Not really uncomfortable, but I'm sure Father would disapprove."
"What else?"
"No sleeveless dresses or shirts, basically sleeves should come to the elbow. No low necklines or hemlines above the knee. Preferably they should be below the knee. I keep mine at the knee. Also, clothes shouldn't be thin material or tightly fitted."
"Can I ask the reason behind this guidance?"
"To safeguard women's character. It should be beauty of the character not of outward appearance."
"I understand." Tyler hesitated. "I have a question. It's none of my business, but November tenth, do you feel you were dressed immodestly? Is that part of your guilt?"
Rebeka showed him a photograph of her on her phone accepting her award. She shied away from looking at him, and almost whispered, "I've never felt so pretty before."
Tyler studied it and then his eyes met hers. "You're absolutely gorgeous."
"The neckline reveals too much."
"There's nothing immodest about that dress. You have nothing to feel guilty about. The dress had nothing to do with what happened." Tyler watched her eyes. "Really, it didn't. Stuart took advantage of you." He studied his ringing phone. "Sorry, I need to take this, it's the hospital." He went into his den.
*****
When Tyler returned, he checked the fireplace and noticed a pan filled with water heating. He removed it, carried it into the kitchen, and saw Rebeka washing the breakfast dishes. He set the pan on the stove. "What are you doing?"
She tilted her head, studied her hands in the soapy water, and then lifted them. "Washing dishes, why?"
"You've been carrying hot water back and forth."
"I needed hot water to wash dishes."
"I thought I told you to rest and relax."
"You did, but washing dishes isn't strenuous."
"You shouldn't be lifting and carrying pans filled with water across the house." Tyler held up a dishtowel. "Dry your hands and have a seat in the living room."
"But I'm almost done."
He slightly jostled the towel and raised an eyebrow. As she dried her hands, he said, "I'll finish."
"In my home women did the dishes."
"I don't doubt that, and normally I'd let you, but you're having a difficult pregnancy and I'm your doctor. You need to rest, at least until Heather examines you. She'll give you more guidance."
He held out his arm for her to take. "I'll escort you to the living room."
Rebeka didn't accept his arm but walked beside him. Her eyes met his. "I'll rest on the couch in a few minutes."
Tyler watched her walk up the stairs and grinned. Those baggy sweats don't immodestly reveal your feminine contours. Somehow on you, they're the cutest dang thing I think I've ever seen. After a few moments he went to the stairs and called, "I'm waiting for you to return to the couch."
Just as she sat on the couch, Tyler's phone rang. "I need to take this. I'll be right back."
*****
Rebeka watched Tyler as he opened his black bag and she asked, "Is something wrong?"
Tyler's eyes met hers as he held his stethoscope. "You've already learned to read my face. I guess that's good." After taking her blood pressure, he said, "I need to go to the hospital, there's been a nineteen-car pileup with numerous serious injuries. We're the closest hospital. When the helicopter comes, it'll bring Aunt Beth. I don't want you to be alone. I thought about bringing you to town, but Heather didn't like the idea of you in a helicopter until she's had a chance to examine you."
"I'm sorry I'm causing so much trouble."
"You're not. Aunt Beth's friend will watch Missy, and I'll be there whenever I can. You'll like Aunt Beth. Pete, you met him on Friday, will be around to make sure there's plenty of firewood." Tyler grinned. "I'll still check on you. Aunt Beth won't be able to check your blood pressure, but she can check your blood sugar. I'm sure they'll have the bridge repaired in a few days. Who knows when electricity will return. It could be in ten minutes or ten days."
*****
About an hour later, Elizabeth and the pilot, Bob, walked through the front door.
Tyler introduced everybody and gave his aunt instructions on Rebeka's care. His eyes met Rebeka's. "Young lady, I want you to do nothing but rest and relax. Don't worry about anything. As I've said before, Roger's taking care of Stuart and once things calm down with the weather, you and I will talk with your dad." He checked his phone. "I need to leave. I will be checking in."
He grabbed a bag and motioned toward the door. "Bob, I'm ready." He winked at Rebeka. "I'll see you in a few days."

Thank you, Google Images, for a photo of the dress Rebeka may have worn to the awards ceremony.
Chapter 3 is short chapter, and I posted it in its entirety. It has a little over 1700 words. I had hoped to write that this time and not make any changes. Not such luck. Yes, I made changes last minute. No matter how much I edit, I still find errors and find things to add and subtract. I hope I didn't make it worse. TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 4 A
About eight-fifteen Wednesday morning, Valentine's Day, Elizabeth and Rebeka leisurely sat around the kitchen table, when a male voice said, "Good morning, ladies."
Elizabeth hugged Tyler and kissed his cheek, as he stood at the kitchen door. Elizabeth said, "The bridge must be fixed."
"It is. After I took Missy to school, I brought your SUV home."
Rebeka glanced at Tyler's T-shirt she wore as pajamas. "No!" She rushed to the doorway, but Tyler's muscular frame filled it. She turned and ran through the dining room to the stairs.
"That shirt never looked that good on me." Tyler chuckled. "Don't run up the stairs, you could fall." He shook his head. "She didn't listen."
Elizabeth pointed an accusing finger at her nephew. "You shouldn't have teased her."
"Probably, but she looked cute."
Elizabeth headed toward the stairs. "I'll talk with her."
Tyler touched his aunt's arm. "Give her time. It's been my experience that she'll stay hidden for a few hours." He glanced at the table. "It looks like you two have become friends. How's she doing?"
"All right. She's filled with all sorts of guilt. With all those restrictions she grew up with there's no way she could follow all the rules. She feels damned to hell, and God will never forgive her. I don't think God's grace was ever discussed in her home." Elizabeth stared at her nephew. "You look tired. How much sleep have you had since you left Sunday?"
Tyler ran his hand through his short hair. "Maybe five hours, total, if that much. I'm going to grab a few hours now. Rebeka has a doctor's appointment at one-thirty. Can you have lunch ready around twelve-thirty? If I'm not up, wake me."
"Go ahead and sleep. I'll take Rebeka."
"I want to. On the way to my room, I'll tell her."
Tyler stood outside Rebeka's door and heard crying. More guilt. He knocked. "Rebeka, I'm sorry my comment upset you," he spoke through the closed door, "You have a doctor's appointment at one-thirty. We'll eat lunch at twelve-thirty, then I'll take you to the appointment."
He grinned when he heard almost a whisper, "Thank you."
He started to walk away, but said, "I'm serious about running up or down the stairs. I'm worried you might fall." He continued to his room, as he muttered, "What am I going to do with her?"
*****
The three of them sat for lunch, as Elizabeth asked, "Ty, what are the plans for Lily?"
"I'll pick her up if we're finished in time. I let her teacher know I'd either be there half an hour early or not at all. If I'm not there, she's to ride the bus home."
"Good."
During lunch, Rebeka remained quiet.
*****
Tyler backed the SUV from the garage, and said, "I see you went back to the clothes you wore when you arrived." Not receiving a comment, he continued, "I wish you'd start talking. I shouldn't have commented on the T-shirt."
"I shouldn't have been downstairs undressed. It's my fault."
He glanced at her and frowned. "As far as you knew only you and Aunt Beth were in the house. You didn't know I was coming home. How could you? It was an innocent mistake. No big deal." He hesitated. "I'm glad you're comfortable enough to come to breakfast like that."
"Aunt Beth's very nice." Rebeka studied her hands. "The next time something like this happens could you call ahead when you're coming home?"
"I'll do my best."
"Thank you."
Tyler parked in his hospital staff parking spot, went around, and opened Rebeka's door. "Ready?"
"I'm nervous. What's the doctor going to do?" asked Rebeka.
"I'm sure Heather ordered some labs. Probably talk with you awhile and then give you a complete exam."
"Okay." As he held the hospital entrance door for her, she asked, "Will you be there?"
"If you want, I will."
"If you have the extra time, I'd like that."
"Then I'll be there." They entered the elevator, and Tyler pressed the button for the third floor.
"Thank you." They stepped from the elevator, and Rebeka glanced around. "You're being watched."
"No, my dear, we're being watched. They're wondering who I'm with."
Her hands flew to her mouth. "No!"
"Don't worry about it. I'm not." Tyler opened the OB/GYN door. "We're here." He walked toward the reception desk. When he glanced around, he noticed Rebeka remained at the door. He held out his hand. "We'll do this together."
Rebeka swallowed and took his hand. "Thank you."
At the counter, Tyler said, "Rebeka Miller's here for a one-thirty appointment with Dr. Heather Sharp."
The young receptionist studied the computer screen. "Sorry, but I don't see an appointment with Dr. Sharp. She's booked for today. Maybe it's with another doctor."
"Ma'am, it's with Dr. Sharp. I spoke with her myself."
The young lady glanced at Tyler as her face flushed red. "Sorry, Dr. Butler." She handed him a tablet. "Please fill this out. I'll let Dr. Sharp know you're here."
Tyler took it and put his hand on the small of Rebeka's back and led her to two empty seats. "Let's get this started."
Once seated, Tyler handed Rebeka the tablet. "You'll probably feel more comfortable filling this out rather than giving me the answers."
She took it. "Thank you. It'd probably be quicker too.
Once Rebeka finished with the questionnaire, she returned the device to the front desk and then sat beside Tyler.
It wasn't long before they were called back to an examination room. Tyler stood off to the side when Rebeka's weight, blood pressure, and temperature were taken. It wasn't long before a lab tech came in and took a blood sample and asked for a urine sample.
A little later, Dr. Sharp appeared. She hugged Tyler. "I heard you were really busy with that accident."
"We were. I sent a few patients your husband's way. The roads were a sheet of ice. I don't know why people thought they could drive on them."
"I don't either." Before Heather sat, she held out her hand to Rebeka. "Hello, I'm Dr. Heather Sharp. It's a pleasure to meet you. While we wait on your labs, why don't you tell me a little about yourself?"
Rebeka glanced at Tyler, who nodded. "Start at the beginning."
Without any details, Rebeka explained when she got pregnant and that she hadn't seen a doctor. She went on to tell how she met Tyler.
Heather's eyes met Tyler's. "I understand her blood pressure and glucose levels are high and there's been cramping and some bleeding."
Tyler handed her his documentation. "These are the readings I've had."
Heather read them and compared the blood pressures with the one just taken. "Today, your blood pressure's higher than these readings."
"She's nervous about the appointment," offered Tyler.
"I understand. I have a few questions. Tell me about your mother's pregnancies. How many siblings do you have?"
"I'm an only child." Rebeka studied her hands that lay in her lap. "Mother was pregnant eight times that I know of."
The doctor's eyes met Tyler's as she exhaled. "Do you know what happened?"
"Mother was fourteen when she and Father married. She lost her first baby within the first trimester. The next two babies were born too early to survive."
"Do you know the reason the doctor gave her?"
"She never saw a doctor. Babies are born at home. We rarely go to the doctor."
"I see. Please continue."
"I was born next."
"Early?"
"I've heard Mother carried me to around thirty-two weeks." Rebeka watched Tyler get her a drink of water. She smiled and accepted it. "Thank you." After a couple of sips, she continued, "The next four were born too early. Three died during birth and the last one died a few hours after birth."
Tyler answered a knock on the door and accepted some papers. He handed them to Heather, who said, "Your lab reports." She tapped the paper. "There's a note here that you didn't fill out all your vaccines."
"Ma'am, I did."
Tyler set his jaw. "Along with not going to doctors you don't always get vaccinations, correct?"
"Yes. I got some. Hepatitis B, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, and Polio."
"We'll go from there." Dr. Sharp read over the results. "Your RH factor is good. You must have had the childhood diseases, measles, mumps, rubella, (German Measles) and chicken pox."
"I did and had whooping cough."
"Everything looks good, but you're anemic. I'll prescribe some iron. Your glucose is high." She glanced at the paper Tyler had given her. "It's about the same. I'll give you a diet to follow." Heather glanced at Tyler.
"It won't be a problem. I'll see Aunt Beth follows it." He grinned. "She needs it herself. I know she'll follow it for somebody else, if not for herself." He checked his ringing phone. "I need to get this. I'll be right back." He stepped from the room.
Heather handed Rebeka a gown. "I'll step out while you put this on. Completely undress and open it to the back." She left.
*****
Dr. Sharp returned and asked Rebeka to lie back on the table. The doctor covered Rebeka's lower half with a sheet and raised the gown, exposing Rebeka's stomach. She pointed to a machine. "I'm doing an ultrasound. If you watch the screen, you'll see your baby."
"Really?"
Heather smiled. "Really." She spread some gel on her stomach. "This will be a little cold." It wasn't long before she moved the probe around. "Here's your baby." She pointed. "That's the heart beating."
Rebeka smiled. "He or she's so tiny."
"Your baby's about the size of a navel orange, maybe three and a half inches long and weighs about two ounces. All the internal organs have formed and will continue to mature."
"I've heard you can tell if the baby's a girl or boy."
"Ultrasounds can tell but not always accurate until around the eighteenth week, and then only if the fetus cooperates. It's up to you if you want to be told."
"I'm not sure. I'll think about it."
The doctor did a few more measurements and then said, "Everything looks normal. Now it's time for me to do an internal exam. She covered Rebeka's stomach using the gown and the sheet a little below her knees. "You'll need to scoot all the way down to the edge of the table and put your feet in the stirrups."
As Heather helped Rebeka place her feet in the stirrups, Tyler walked in. "Excuse me. I'll wait in the hall."
*****
Dr. Sharp had already noted fear in Rebeka's eyes as soon as she mentioned the internal exam and said, "Excuse me a minute." She went into the hall. "Ty, she's petrified of this exam. I think it's her first. You need to be there and reassure her."
"I doubt it. It bothered her when I measured the baby bump. I'm the last person she wants in there."
"I have a feeling you're the only person she trusts."
"Maybe." He rubbed his chin. "Okay."
Heather opened the door. "Ms. Miller, Ty's coming in. He'll stand by your right shoulder. You'll be covered. He won't see anything. Is this all right?"
Rebeka nodded and held out her hand for him.
He took her hand and stood at the head of the bed. "It'll be okay. You'll feel a little discomfort. Heather will talk you through it."
She, again, nodded.
Dr. Sharp described everything she did, before she did it. During the discomfort Rebeka squeezed Tyler's hand and looked into his eyes. He took his other hand and patted hers.
When the exam was over, Heather said, "We'll step out while you dress. We'll be in shortly, and then we'll talk."

TODAY'S POST:
Tyler and Dr. Sharp returned to the room. As Heather sat, she handed Rebeka a photo of her baby's ultrasound. "I have a Valentines Day present for you."
Rebeka studied her baby and smiled. "Thank you for sharing this photo with me."
"You're welcome. Each time I do an ultrasound I'll take a photograph. You'll be able to see the baby's development."
A smile covered Rebeka's face.
Tyler grinned. "There's that beautiful smile, again."
"Okay," said Heather with a smile. "Miss Miller, do you have any questions?"
"I don't think so."
Heather continued, "Then I'll explain my findings and offer some suggestions. Since you were born early, some studies indicate you could deliver this baby early. We'll be prepared for pre-term delivery. I'll keep an eye on the length of your cervix which can be an indicator."
Heather glanced at Tyler and then faced Rebeka. "Preeclampsia is a complication caused by changes in the blood flow to the placenta. It's usually characterized by high blood pressure or swelling in hands and feet. Preeclampsia can be dangerous. Because your blood pressure is elevated, I'll closely monitor this. I'm sure Ty will help with that."
He nodded. "Already on it."
The doctor took Rebeka's hand. "I don't want to scare you but there's evidence that miscarriages are hereditary. We don't know what happened with your mother's pregnancies, but we need to watch you to ensure you have a healthy baby."
Tears welled in Rebeka's eyes as she faced Tyler.
Heather continued, "Now for your gestational diabetes. High blood sugar can cause problems for you and your baby, including an increased likelihood of needing a C-section at delivery. The good news, Ty caught it early and has been on top of it."
Rebeka turned toward Tyler. "Thank you."
"A possible complication for your baby includes excessive birth weight. Do you know if you were a large baby?"
"Sorry, I don't. Just that I was early."
"Another risk factor is preterm birth, which we've already discussed. The baby may have respiratory distress syndrome" a condition that makes breathing difficult or maybe a still born baby."
"Is that why some of Mother's babies weren't born alive?"
"Possibly, but we don't know for sure." Heather took a deep breath. "There are some risk factors for you. Some we've already mentioned. Gestational diabetes raises your risk of high blood pressure. It can cause other symptoms that can threaten both your life and your baby's."
Tyler asked, "Do we discuss delivery today or should we wait?"
The doctor smiled. "I'll get to that. Let me finish here. One thing you'll need to be aware of is being at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes as you age. So far, your sugar level isn't high enough to start insulin. Hopefully it can be regulated with diet."
"I'll see to it your suggestions are followed," said Tyler.
"As for activity, aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days of the week. I happen to know Ty has a beautiful ranch for walking. Another thing, be careful about your weight gain. Any question?"
"There's so much information."
"Don't worry. I have handouts and will always be available." Heather glanced at Tyler. "Will she remain with you for the duration of her pregnancy?"
"Yes."
"But?" said Rebeka.
"Going back to Dallas will cause too much stress. You'll stay with me until the baby's born."
"Good," said the doctor. "I normally don't schedule birthing classes this early, but we need to be ready for this baby and you're already fourteen weeks along. Who will be your birthing coach?"
"I hadn't thought about it. I guess Aunt Beth." Rebeka glanced at Tyler. "Think she'd mind?"
"I'll do it." Tyler shoved his hands into his pockets. "If I get hung up at the hospital, Aunt Beth will fill in on those days."
Rebeka swallowed loudly and caused Heather to ask, "Ms. Miller, are you comfortable with that?"
"I know how busy he is. He's already done so much."
"Ty is busy, but I know when he sets his mind, how committed he is to it. It seems he's set his mind to getting this baby here safely." Dr. Sharp checked her calendar. "I'll schedule your classes for the four weeks in April and the first two weeks in May. That'll put you at twenty-six weeks. We should be safe. Normally this early in pregnancy, I only see patients once a month, but I'd like to see you every other week, earlier if anything changes." She stood and took Rebeka's hand. "It's been nice meeting you." She turned and hugged Tyler. "Take care of her."
"I will. Thank you for fitting her in."
She kissed his cheek. "How could I turn you down?"
He grinned. "You can't, and I can't turn you down either."
"I know. You two take care. See you in two weeks."
*****
Tyler opened the examination room door for Rebeka to walk though. "Why don't we stop at the coffee shop?" When she faced him, he added, "I know they have tea."
They walked through the hospital hallways and people stopped, stared, and whispered. Rebeka glanced at Tyler. "Are you sure this is a good idea?"
Tyler cupped her elbow. "Since you're living with me, you might as well get used to it." She studied his hand on her elbow, and he added, "I'm going to be your birthing coach. You might as well get comfortable with me touching you."
"I'm going to be getting used to a lot of things, aren't I?"
"You are." Inside the coffee shop, Tyler held a chair for Rebeka. "I'll be right back." He left to order their drinks.
Tyler returned with his coffee and Rebeka's tea. As he sat, he said, "I have a feeling you have questions about the appointment with Heather. Please ask. I'll answer the best I can. Since, I'm an ER doctor, I might not know the answers, but I'll find them."
She removed the teabag and set it on the saucer. "So much was said and so many medical terms used, can you give me the Cliff Notes version?"
"I'll try." Tyler chuckled. "Because of your high blood pressure and glucose level, you're going to have a difficult pregnancy. It may be hereditary, but that doesn't mean we can't do things to make it easier. First, we'll do everything to keep your life stress free. That'll help with blood pressure."
"That may be impossible."
"Roger's working on solving the problem with your agent. I'll help with your dad. We can do this."
"Thank you."
"With the right diet and some mild exercise, we'll get your glucose levels down." He checked the time. "Excuse me. I need to make sure Missy made it home."
After Tyler verified Lily was at home, Rebeka asked, "Why do you call Lily Missy?"
He grinned. "That's easy. She has just the right amount of a sassy attitude." He studied Rebeka over his coffee cup as he took a drink.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked.
"I need a nickname for you. I think I just figured it out. Beka."
"Beka, why?"
He finished his coffee and stood. "From now on, you're Beka." He held her chair. "We have another stop."
"Where?"
"You'll see." He held out his arm for her to take. When she did, he grinned. "Thank you, Beka."
*****
After Tyler parked on Main Street, Rebeka asked, "Why are we here?"
"Your dress is getting tight, and you can't wear Aunt Beth's sweats and my shirts for your entire pregnancy. You're going to need maternity clothes. So, let's do some shopping."
"I don't have enough money. It'll have to wait until Roger gets my finances squared away."
"I want to do this. This'll get you started."
"Tyler?"
He got out of the SUV, walked around, and opened her door. "If I'm calling you Beka, you can call me Ty or anything else you want."
Her eyebrows rose. "Really?"
"Maybe I need to put parameters around that." He chuckled.
She, again, accepted his arm. "Ty, it is."
"Thank you. Now let's get you some new clothes."
Inside the store, they walked over to the maternity section. A salesclerk in her mid-forties came to them. "Can I help you?"
Rebeka's eyes met Tyler's, as he said, "We're looking for maternity dresses."
"I'm Janie and I'll be happy to help you." She studied Rebeka. "What are you, sweetie, about a zero - two?"
"Yes, Ma'am." Rebeka's cheeks tinged pink.
Janie walked to another section of the dresses. "Follow me. Will you be looking for the slacks too?"
"No, Ma'am," replied Rebeka.
A few minutes later, Rebeka held up three dresses, "May I try these on?"
"Of course." The salesclerk led the way and pointed. "The dressing rooms are right here." Then she went to a chair and put her hands on the back of it. "Sir, you may wait here."
Janie sat beside Tyler, and she asked, "Is this your first?"
"Yes, it's her first." Tyler stood and searched for additional dresses. He chose four and handed them to Janie. "Would you take these to Rebeka? I think she'd like them."
"Sure." When Janie returned, she said, "She'll be out in just a moment with the first dress."
Rebeka had tried on six of the seven dresses when Tyler chose one more dress. "Janie, please take this to her. She might have a reason for something dressier."
When Rebeka came out wearing that dress, Tyler grinned. "You look very nice."
"I doubt I'll have an occasion for a dress like this."
He tilted his head. "One never knows. Aunt Beth has mentioned numerous times a female can't have too many clothes."
Janie agreed, "Aunt Beth's a wise woman." She stood beside Rebeka. "All these dresses have openings for nursing. Are you planning on nursing? Should we look at nursing bras?"
Rebeka turned bright red and rushed into the dressing room.
With wide eyes, Janie asked, "What was wrong with what I said?"
Since they can't swim in mixed company, I'm guessing certain subjects aren't discussed in mixed company. Tyler rubbed his hands together. "I'm thinking that's a topic not discussed in mixed company."
"That's still a thing?"
"For some people it is."
*****
Rebeka studied the eight dresses before she chose three. Hesitantly, she asked, "Ty, are three too many?"
"Why don't you get them all?"
"No, that's way too many." She laid one down. "I'll get these two. I'm very grateful for these."
Tyler took the two dresses from her and the one she had put down and carried them to the cash register. "We'll get these."
Janie rang them up. As Tyler paid, he glanced at Rebeka and noticed something else had caught her eye and he whispered, "We'll take the other five dresses too. Please have them delivered to my ranch tomorrow afternoon."
She smiled. "Yes, Dr. Butler."
At the door, Tyler took a deep breath, put the packages in his left hand, put his right arm around Rebeka's waist, and drew her close. "Beka, I don't know how they found out we're here. Don't make eye contact. Look at the sidewalk. I'll help you maneuver the crowd."
"Thank you."

Thank you, Google Images, for a photo of a 14-week embryo.
Chapter 4 is a long chapter, and so I'm posting it in three different parts. This is part one or 4B. It has a little less than 1900 words. I had hoped to write that this time I had not make any changes. Not such luck. On Friday, I rewrote part of this chapter and when I edited yesterday, I rewrote another part. Today as I posted, I rewrote something else. Hopefully, I have it correct now. I kept adding details I felt were necessary for understanding. I wanted to describe the doctor's appointment with enough detail, yet not too much to get boring. No matter how much I edit, I still find errors and find things to add and subtract. I hope I didn't make it worse. Thank you for taking your time to read and write a review. |

TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 4 C
Once Rebeka sat in the SUV with the door closed, Tyler faced the crowd. "I'm not sure what this is about, but there's not a story here."
"That's Rebeka Miller, the famous romance author, right?" called out a woman. "She looks pregnant. Are you the father?"
"I said there's no story. You need to leave."
He put the packages inside the SUV, got behind the steering wheel, and turned the key. "Ready for home?"
Rebeka swallowed. "How did they find out?"
"I don't know. I'm guessing Janie called them."
"You spent a lot of money in there. Why would she do that?" Rebeka whispered, "I'm sorry I got you involved."
"You didn't get me involved. I involved myself, knew the risks, and chose to help."
"I'm grateful for everything you've done."
*****
Inside the house, Elizabeth walked to them. "I'm glad you're back. Dinner will be ready in twenty minutes." She smiled at Tyler. "I've fixed a diabetic friendly meal, grilled chicken and plenty of vegetables."
He chuckled. "Great, let me guess dessert is a huge pan of brownies."
Elizabeth frowned. "No, fresh fruit." She faced Rebeka and teased, "I'm actively ignoring him. Sweetheart, how'd your doctor's appointment go? Heather's nice, isn't she?"
"She is. You know her?"
"She's a hometown girl. She and Ty have been friends since elementary school."
"They have history."
"Not that kind of history." Tyler shook his head. "We've only ever been friends. Probably too much alike to be anything more. Heather and my sister, Lori, were best friends." He scanned the area. "Where's Missy?"
"She and Zeke are in the barn with Pete. You'd better get her. By the time she gets cleaned up, dinner will be on the table." Elizabeth glanced at Rebeka. "Why don't you go with him?"
"Shouldn't I help with dinner?"
Tyler took her hand. "You need to meet Maude and Gabby. Besides Heather said you should get some exercise." He held Elizabeth's jacket. "We should've gotten you a coat in town."
On their way to the barn, Elizabeth yelled out the front door, "Ty, hurry and get Lily, you need to see this. It's not good."
He glanced at Rebeka. "Go back inside. I'll be right there." He took a few steps and called, "Missy, you're needed in the house."
"Uncle Ty, can't I stay a few more minutes?"
"No, dinner's ready."
Peter stepped from the barn and held up his phone. "I think she better stay a little longer. I'll bring her in. You need to take care of a few things."
Tyler nodded and hurried to the house. Inside he said, "Pete will bring Missy. What's going on?" He studied Rebeka's tears. "Beka?"
Elizabeth motioned him to have a seat in front of the TV. On the entertainment section of the news were photos and videos of him and Rebeka coming out of the hospital's OB/GYN clinic, the coffee shop, and the dress store. The reporters speculated on Rebeka's pregnancy and whether Tyler's the father. It was also mentioned that the couple live together on his ranch. The final sound bite was 'Dallas's most eligible bachelor has been snagged by the number one rated romance author.'
Tyler exhaled and then glanced at Rebeka as the tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry. I knew there'd be stares and comments but never expected this."
"I never should've stayed here."
"You didn't have a viable choice." Tyler took her hand.
Rebeka pulled it away and stood. "Ty, no Dr. Butler, I need to leave tonight. I'll call a taxi and stay in town."
Tyler stood. "That's not going to happen. Your pregnancy's high risk. I'm sure your blood pressure is off the charts. You'll remain here. There'll be less stress."
She pointed at the TV. "Are you saying this isn't stressful?"
"It's stressful."
Rebeka glanced at her phone and then clicked it off. "It's Richard. He's probably seen the news and figured out he's the father."
Tyler checked his phone. "It's Roger. I'll take it in the den." He walked away as he answered his phone.
Elizabeth said, "Rebeka, I have an idea to help get your mind off all this for a few minutes. I want to show you a project I've been working on." They went to Elizabeth's room. Once there, she motioned for Rebeka to sit on the bed. She uncovered a quiliting frame with a quilt started. "Have you ever helped make a quilt?"
"I have. This is beautiful. I like the pattern. I haven't seen one quite like this. Those colors go together perfectly."
"I'm making it for a women's bazaar at church. Would you like to help?" Elizabeth took a piece of fabric and handed it to Rebeka. "It'd be nice to work on it together."
Rebeka studied the stitches. "Your stitches are so delicate. I might mess it up."
Elizabeth smiled. "I doubt that. I have a feeling your stitches are perfect. How old were you when you started quilting?"
"Around ten. Mother made all our quilts."
"I had a feeling you started early. I bet you might be better than me."
"I doubt that. This is beautiful."
Silently they worked together on different stars and turned their heads when they heard Peter and Tyler.
Elizabeth stood. "Let's go downstairs. I'd better finish dinner. I'm sure Lily's hungry. She'll need to take her bath and get ready for bed."
As they entered the living room, Tyler said, "Tomorrow I'll take Missy to school and then Beka and I'll head for her dad's. Pete will stay with you and you'll both pick up Missy. I'll tell the school's office that Missy isn't to speak with anybody about this situation."
When he saw Rebeka's raised eyebrows, he said, "Maybe I should've spoken with you about this before I made plans, right?" When she didn't answer, he added, "Nothing's finalized. What do I need to change?"
"Nothing. My parents don't own a TV or radio, so they won't see or hear this. Some people in our community aren't as strict as Father and would be happy to tell him that his daughter strayed. I need to tell him before he finds out. I'm not sure you should accompany me. I've already done enough damage to your reputation."
"I'm not worried about my reputation. I am worried about your health. Today hasn't helped. I know tomorrow will be worse. You need a doctor with you, and I'm volunteering."
Elizabeth touched Rebeka's arm. "Sweetheart, Ty's right. You'll need somebody with you."
"I don't have a car. I could tell him over the phone."
"Probably not a good idea. Be right back." Tyler stepped away and returned with a map. "Show me where we're going."
Rebeka pointed to a small area away from any towns or cities on the other side of Dallas. "Here."
"It really is in the middle of nowhere." Tyler studied the map for a few moments. "It looks like a four-and half-hour drive." He asked, "Aunt Beth, can we take your SUV? I think Beka will be more comfortable in it."
"Of course, you did today. How am I going to get Lily from school? Your pickup's a manual and so is your corvette."
Peter offered, "Elizabeth, I'll take you to get Lily."
Tyler refolded the map. "It's settled. Beka, call your dad and tell him we'll be there around noon. As soon as I drop Missy at school, we'll head out."
"I'll do it after dinner."
"Good idea. Aunt Beth, how close is dinner?"
"All I need to do is put it on the table. Pete, will you join us?"
"I'd better get to my place. I'll be back first thing in the morning."
Tyler watched Missy come into the room. "Hands and face washed?"
She held them up to show him. "Can I meet Miss Miller, now?"
"Sure can." Tyler introduced them.
Rebeka knelt to Lily's level and held out her hand. "It's nice to meet you, but you can call me Rebeka."
"Uncle Ty won't let me call adults by their names." She glanced at him. "Can I call her Miss Rebeka?" When he nodded, she said, "Goody!" and gave Rebeka a hug.
Elizabeth carried in a platter and a bowl. "Ty, please help Rebeka set the table."
It didn't take long to set the table, pray, and start dinner.
*****
After the table was cleared, Tyler told Lily to get started on her bath and then call him for her story. As Lily went up the stairs, he faced Rebeka. "When are you calling your dad?"
She swallowed. "I'll help Elizabeth with the dishes and then call."
Tyler thought for a moment. "I'll probably be reading Missy's story. Can you call now? I want to be with you."
"Thank you, but you don't need to."
"I know but want to." Tyler hesitated. "If you don't want me with you, I'll understand."
"I'd like the support, but..." She turned away from him.
He grinned and took her hand. "Let's go to my den and do this." Inside the den, he shut the door and offered her a chair. "I'm ready whenever you are."
After Rebeka sat, Zeke sat beside her, and she petted his head. A few moments later, she removed the phone from her pocket. She stared at it as she took a few deep breaths. "Okay, I'm ready." She clicked on her father's name.
The phone rang a few times, before 'Hello,' was heard.
"Father, this is Rebeka." After he acknowledged her, she continued, "I want to see if it's all right if a friend and I come for a visit tomorrow around noon?" She listened then said, "Yes, that's right. We'll only be there for the afternoon. We'll enjoy sharing a meal with you. Thank you. I look forward to seeing you. Goodbye, Father." She hung up.
Tyler studied her before he said, "That was awfully formal for a father-daughter conversation."
"That's Father. Would you share what you and Roger discussed?" Rebeka continued to pet Zeke.
"I can." Tyler opened his black bag and took out the blood pressure cuff and stethoscope. "Can I do this first?"
"That bad?"
"Perhaps." He checked it and said, "I knew it would be high. It's almost at danger level. I'll check it again before you go to bed."
"Roger?" reminded Rebeka.
"Richard Stuart repeatedly phoned Amber. She didn't answer so he came to her apartment and began knocking and shouting. Not sure how to handle it, she called Roger, who went over there. After they threaten him with a lawsuit, Stuart left. But Roger didn't answer any of his questions. The major one being who's the father of your baby. And Amber's spending the night at Roger's apartment."
Rebeka's hand flew to her mouth.
"I guess both of you are staying with Dallas' most eligible bachelors," teased Tyler.
"I'm not sure that's something to be proud of."
Tyler chuckled. "You could be right." He walked to the door. "I hear Missy. It's story time."
****
Once Lily's story was over, Tyler noticed Rebeka's bedroom door was closed and knocked. "Beka, I need to check your blood pressure." As he did that, he said, "We'll need to leave about seven-thirty."
"I'll be ready. How bad is it?"
"It's gone down slightly, but not enough. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."

Tyler and Rebeka met 7 days ago.
Previous Post:
Once Lily's story was over, Tyler noticed Rebeka's bedroom door was closed and knocked. "Beka, I need to check your blood pressure." As he did that, he said, "We'll need to leave about seven-thirty."
"I'll be ready. How bad is it?"
"It's gone down slightly, but not enough. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
TODAY'S POST:
Thursday morning when Rebeka joined the family in the kitchen, she noticed three bouquets of flowers on the kitchen table. "The flowers are beautiful."
Tyler picked up a mid-sized bouquet of buttercups. "Yesterday was a mess, and I neglected to give my Valentine's Day presents to my three favorite ladies. These are for you."
Rebeka accepted the vase. "Thank you, but..." Tears welled in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks.
His left eyebrow rose as he asked, "Did I do something wrong?"
"No!" Rebeka exhaled and dried her tears. "I've never received flowers before."
"Then I'm honored to be the first man to give you flowers. I doubt I'll be last."
Elizabeth held up a beautiful display of multicolored flowers, as Lily held up a small bouquet of colorful tulips with a small heart-shaped box of assorted chocolates that Tyler had given to each of them.
"You're welcome, ladies." He grinned and checked the time. "Missy, we'll leave in thirty minutes."
"Okay, Uncle Ty." She faced Rebeka. "Will you be here when I get home from school?"
"I should be. We're visiting my parents today, so I don't know who'll return first."
"Good." Lily jumped up and down. "This afternoon, I'll introduce you to Maude and Gabby."
"I can't wait. Your uncle has told me about them."
"Don't believe anything he says. He makes them sound naughty, and they aren't."
Elizabeth set breakfast on the table. "Let's say prayer and eat."
*****
The drive into town was filled with Lily discussing the antics of Maude and Gabby. A few blocks from the school, Tyler noticed a news crew had set up. "That's not good." He called Christina, Elizabeth's friend, and asked if Rebeka could stay with her while he dropped off Lily at school.
At Christina's home, Tyler introduced the ladies and hurried back to school. He ignored the crowd and the reporters, as he carried Lily inside. Once Lily was in her classroom, he explained to the principal he didn't want Lily involved with any discussion surrounding Miss Miller or himself. He was assured that wouldn't happen.
*****
On the drive to her parents, Rebeka apologized, "I'm sorry for the mess I've made of things. There's no way you should be involved."
Tyler chuckled. "I agree. I shouldn't be, but it's not your fault." He glanced at her. "Even with everything that's happened, I'd still help with the accident and invite you into my home."
"Why?"
"It was the right thing to do." He paused. "Yesterday, Pete called a tow truck and they're coming today to take your car to a mechanic. We should know in a few days if it can be fixed."
"Thank you."
Tyler nodded.
They engaged in small talk about the scenery and similar conversations for a while, before Rebeka said, "I have a question. If I'm being too personal, just say so and I'll understand."
His eyes widened as he glanced her way. "Ask away."
"Where's Lily's father?"
"Tom was in the Army. Two months before Missy was born, he died in Afghanistan. He was three weeks shy of returning to the states. She never knew her father."
"I'm sorry. That had to be difficult."
"It was. For everybody involved. I'm proud of the way Lori picked up up the pieces and continued."
"I'm sure you and Aunt Beth were there to support Lori."
"We were. That's when Aunt Beth moved into the house. I should've moved home then and been more available for Lori. I regret that."
"Hindsight is twenty-twenty."
"Very true. Tom was a good man. I know he'd have been a great father. I have huge shoes to fill."
They both fell silent.
*****
Tyler parked outside of Rebeka's parents' modest house and then opened the passenger door. She exhaled a deep breath. "I guess I'm ready." She accepted his offered hand to help her out. "I don't imagine you're going to wait out here, are you?"
"Not a chance. Let's do this."
Rebeka's mother opened the front door. "Mother," greeted Rebeka. They hugged and then she continued, "I'd like to introduce Dr. Tyler Butler." He offered his hand, as Rebeka continued, "Tyler, my mother, Ruth Miller."
"Nice to meet you, Mrs. Miller."
Ruth tentatively accepted his hand. "Nice to meet you. I will take your coats." She turned and called, "Elijah, your daughter is home."
Moments later Elijah came to the door. He glared at Tyler. "Rebeka, I understood you to say you were bringing a friend home with you."
"I did, Father. Dr. Tyler Butler is my friend. I was in a car accident and my car was damaged. He was kind enough to drive me here. I have a few things I need to discuss with you."
Tyler offered his hand. "I'm happy to meet you, Mr. Miller."
Elijah refused the offered hand. "How do you know my daughter?"
"I crashed my car into his mailbox, and he was kind enough to help me," repeated Rebeka.
"Daughter, I did not ask you," snapped Elijah. "I asked Dr. Butler."
Tyler repeated what Rebeka had said and added additional details of what had happened that day, and then said, "We need to discuss a few other things that might take a while. Would it be possible to sit? I think everyone would be more comfortable."
"You are forward, young man." Elijah turned. "We can go into the living room. What do you have to say?"
Ruth studied Rebeka. "Elijah, dinner is ready. Is it all right if we go straight to the table?"
"Yes." He pointed to where each person would sit. After they were seated, he blessed the food. Nothing was said until everyone was served.
Elijah took the first bite. "Rebeka, what is so important that you traveled all this way to tell me?"
She studied her plate, trying to gather the nerve to tell her father. "I'm three and half months pregnant," she whispered.
Her father set his jaw, he slammed his fists on the table, and rage filled his eyes as he studied Tyler. "You did this to my daughter?"
"Father, Tyler isn't the father. He has only been respectful toward me."
"Yet you are living with this man!" yelled her father.
"Beka is staying in my home, but we aren't living together. We have separate rooms and will continue to have separate rooms. I have never disrespected your daughter and never will."
"My daughter's name is Rebeka. You can address her as Rebeka or Miss Miller, which is what I prefer you call her." He glared at her. "Who is the father? Why are you not with him?"
Rebeka repeated part of the situation and then stated, "I want nothing to do with him. He's not a nice person. I will raise this baby by myself."
"You thought he was nice enough to allow him to get you pregnant."
"Sir," said Tyler. "Sometimes situations aren't as they appear. He took advantage of your daughter."
Elijah's eyes glared at Tyler. "Were you there?"
"No, I wasn't."
"You do not know anything. You need to keep quiet. This is between my daughter and her father. She has disrespected our family and our God. She knows what that means." Elijah's eyes met Rebeka's. "Do you not?"
Tears welled and dripped down her cheeks. "I do know, Father."
He stood and on his way from the room said, "Wife, we no longer have a daughter. Collect the things she left when she went to live in sin."
"Yes, Elijah." Ruth left the room.
Tyler's hand covered Rebeka's. "I'm sorry. What can I do?"
Her tears turned to sobbing. "Nothing." She groaned and grabbed her stomach.
"A cramp?" When she nodded, he put his hand on her stomach. "I need to check the cramping." After he felt her stomach for a few moments, he stood. "I'll be right back."
Ruth came in, held her daughter's hand, and sat with her. "I am sorry."
Immediately Elijah's loud angry voice was heard, "You are not welcome here. You need to leave my house. You never should have brought this Jezebel."
"Rebeka's your daughter. How can you treat her like this?" shouted Tyler.
"I do not have a daughter."
"You do have a daughter who loves you very much. She's having a difficult pregnancy. She's in danger of losing this baby. She needs your love, prayers, and acceptance. She doesn't need your judgement and condemnation."
"Since the beginning of time women have had babies. They delivered babies in the fields and then went right back to work. She doesn't need to be pampered."
"I'm sorry you feel this way." Tyler was silent before he added, "A girl who never felt a father's love and affection will never fully understand what it feels like to be loved by a man. Maybe you're the reason Rebeka got involved with the jerk who took advantage of her."
"If you do not have a wife or daughter, how can you judge someone for raising a daughter as they see fit?"
"I've never been married nor had children. My sister and her husband died. I'm raising my five-year-old niece. I do have some idea what it's like to raise a daughter. By being an example, I'm making sure she understands how men should treat her."
Tyler entered the dining room and noticed Rebeka had left. He headed toward the door. Ruth handed him his and Rebeka's jacket. "Thank you," he said. "Sorry, you had to hear that." He glanced out the door and saw Rebeka walking down the road. "Will you be all right?"
"Yes, some church members will be by in a few minutes. They will stay until Elijah calms down."
He removed his card from his wallet and said, "My contact information. Please call anytime you need to, day or night."
Ruth placed her hand on his arm. "Please take care of my daughter."
He covered her hand with his. "I will. I promise. I need to tend to her now."
*****
Outside, Tyler hurried to Rebeka and held her coat as she put it on. "Still cramping?" When she nodded, he said, "Ready to leave?"
"Yes."
He cupped her elbow and led her to the SUV.
The first thirty minutes of the drive was silent, before Rebeka said, "I'm sorry."
He glanced toward her. "Why are you sorry? You were afraid of your father's response. I had hoped you were exaggerating, but you weren't." He watched her hold her stomach. "Still cramping?" When she nodded, he said, "We'll stop the first chance we get. I want to check your blood pressure and the cramping."
The drive continued, until Rebeka said, "Stop!" She took a deep breath. "I'm going to be sick."
Tyler quickly pulled onto a gravel side road. Rebeka opened the door and stepped out. He joined her, as she walked slowly down the road.
"Has this helped? Feeling any better?" He paused. "Did you hear your father's and my discussion?"
She held her stomach. "You mean the yelling match?"
"Sorry. What he said was wrong."
"This isn't your fight."
"True." Tyler put his hand on her arm. "I've made it my fight. I'm here for you."
"Why?"
"You've been wronged and didn't deserve it. You need somebody in your corner."
Rebeka studied his sapphire eyes for a few moments, before she threw her arms around his neck and let the tears flow freely.
He held her and caressed her back. "It's all right. I'm here for you and will be until this little one's born and you're back on your feet."
Once Rebeka cried her last tear, Tyler escorted her to the car, opened her door, and helped her inside. As she sat, she said, "Thank you."
"Anytime. When we get on the Interstate, we'll stop for gas and get something to eat. I noticed you didn't eat anything."
Rebeka nodded.
*****
At a gas station, Rebeka finished with the bathroom and walked around. When she found what she was looking for, she hesitated and studied Tyler. He glanced at her, and she said, "Ty?"
He moved closer. "A problem?"
Her view went to the women's pads and liners.
Tyler exhaled. "Spotting worse?" When she nodded, he added, "Get what you need."
"I don't have any money."
"I know. Also, get a drink and something to eat."
"Thank you."
*****
Inside the car, Rebeka put her hands over her stomach. "Another cramp?" asked Tyler. When she nodded, he placed his hand on her stomach. "I need to feel the tightening in your stomach." When he moved his hand, he made a phone call, "Aunt Beth, we won't be home tonight. Beka needs to rest. I'll keep you posted. Tell Missy I'll call before she goes to bed."
Rebeka's eyes met his. "What's going on?"
"I'm finding a hotel. You need a break. I don't want to risk traveling any longer. This trip was too stressful."
They took the exit with the first billboard sign that advertised a hotel.

TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 5 B
The first two hotels they stopped at had no vacancies. The third hotel had one vacancy, with one king-size bed. Tyler took it. Beka won't like this. I'll sleep on the couch. Hopefully she trusts me. He paused and muttered, "At least a little."
Inside the room Rebeka scanned the area. "Where's the second bed?"
"This is the only room available. I'll sleep on the couch."
She walked to it, spread her arms the length of it, and said, "It's too short. You'll never fit. I'll sleep here."
"In your condition, that's not going to happen." Tyler opened his medical bag. "I want to check your blood pressure and glucose level."
When he finished, his eyes revealed his concern.
"They're not good, are they?" asked Rebeka.
"Both are close to the danger level. Lie down and rest for a while. Hopefully resting will bring them down. I'll take them again in about an hour. If they remain where they're at, we'll visit an ER."
After she lay on the bed, Tyler folded the other side of the blankets over her. "Maybe you'll get some sleep."
"What are you going to do?"
"Sit here and worry." Tyler grinned. "You relax. I promise to worry enough for both of us, deal?"
With a weak smile, Rebeka said, "Deal."
*****
As the sun dimmed in the sky, Rebeka woke up. "Ty?"
He touched her arm. "I'm right here.' He held his stethoscope. "As soon as I check your blood pressure, I'll get dinner. Any suggestions?"
She reached for his hand. "Please don't leave."
Tyler's thumb caressed the top of her hand. "I'll order delivery." He finished taking her blood pressure. "Still not good, but the nap helped. What do you feel like eating?" While she thought, he searched through his phone. "How about cedar plank grilled salmon and steamed vegetables?"
"Sounds good."
"It does. I'll get the same."
Rebeka dozed on and off as Tyler called in the dinner order. When he answered his ringing phone, she awoke. Tyler nodded in her direction. "Hey, Roger, what's going on?" He listened and then let out a deep breath. "Sorry Stuart's being a jerk." He teased, "Think it's a good idea having Amber stay with you?"
Rebeka sat up. "What? No!" She held out her hand. "Let me talk with her."
Tyler shook his head. "They're adults. They can handle it. Roger's keeping her safe."
The phone conversation continued, and Tyler said, "I don't think it's a good idea that you two come this weekend. We visited Beka's father today. She's having a few issues and needs to rest." He thought for a moment. "Monday's a holiday. How about coming on Sunday and return Monday or maybe Tuesday? She'll have Friday and Saturday to rest. I'll let you know if Beka needs additional time to rest."
Those days were agreed to, as there was a knock on their door. "Sorry Roger, dinner's here. We'll talk later." Tyler answered the door, tipped the delivery person, and took the bag. Then he moved two bedside tables close to each other as a dining table and moved two chairs around them. He set the food on the table. "Ready to eat?"
"Thank you for everything."
"Not a problem. After you've eaten, I'll test your insulin level. Has the cramping eased any?"
"Some." She took a bite of salmon. "This is really good."
Moments later another knock sounded at the door. Rebeka's eyes widened. "Who could that be?"
"I ordered a few things we might need tonight." He set the bags on the couch. "Let's finish eating."
Dinner was finished and the containers disposed, before Tyler opened the first bag.
Rebeka watched Tyler remove the items and place them into two piles. "What are you doing?"
Tyler winked. "You'll see in a minute." The bags were emptied. He carried one of the piles to Rebeka. "Things you might need tonight and in the morning. I hope you're happy with my choices."
She held up soft blue plaid pajama bottoms and a soft blue long sleeved top.
Tyler watched her. "I know you don't wear pants, but since we're sharing a bedroom, I thought they'd be best. Our sleeping situation hasn't been resolved. You won't be sleeping on the couch."
"The couch isn't long enough for you."
"Any suggestions?" asked Tyler with a raised eyebrow.
"This is so not right, but I guess we share the bed."
"It's up to you. Since I've never slept with someone, I don't know if I travel around the bed." He paused. "After my sister died, Missy crawled in bed for a while. She never addressed it. I'll do my best to stay on my side of the bed."
Rebeka ignored his comment as she picked up the toiletries and carried them to the bathroom. "You've made good choices." At the mirror, she held up the new dress in front of her body before she hung it up. "This is beautiful. Thank you. There's no way I can ever repay your kindness. As soon as my finances get fixed, I'll repay what I can."
"Don't even try. I won't accept it. I'm sharing freely with no expectations." Tyler walked to the window and stared out before he turned and faced Rebeka. "I think I gave you the wrong impression. I want to clear it up."
He sat in a chair across from her. "I said I hadn't slept with anybody. I have shared a bed, but we didn't sleep."
"I understand. It's none of my business."
"I felt I needed to be completely honest. I don't want any misunderstandings."
"Thank you, but you don't owe me an explanation."
"Probably." Tyler paused and exhaled. "My goal is for you to have a healthy baby. I'm going to be your birthing coach. There's a reason it's called labor and delivery. It'll probably be the hardest thing you've ever done. If this is going to work, you're going to need to completely trust me."
He moved the chair closer. "You've shared parts of your life, I'm sure you would've preferred not to tell anybody. You didn't share your pregnancy with Amber. Roger assumed you had and accidently told her."
"I need to apologize to her. I was so ashamed. I tried a few times but couldn't."
"I figured that was the situation. Since I expect your honesty, I need to be honest with you." He reached over and touched Rebeka's arm. "I know at least two men you trusted, your father, and your agent and they both wronged you. I don't know if there were other men."
"No. Men were never interested in me. Men like curvy women. I don't qualify.
I resemble a twig. Besides, I dress like an old lady, don't wear make-up, and..."
"Stop putting yourself down. I've only known you for a week and already realize how special you are."
"I understand how busy you are raising Lily, your work, and your private life. I don't want to interfere."
"Under most circumstances, Missy will come first, but I have Aunt Beth's help, so there's some wiggle room. Yes, my work keeps me busy, but there are other doctors who can cover it when necessary. I don't have a private life. I'm a bachelor. I'm free, so you'll fit right in."
Rebeka studied her hands in her lap.
"Until this baby is born, and you're back on your feet," Tyler studied her before he continued, "I'm committed to you and this baby."
"Why?"
Tyler got up and walked around the room, before he sat. When he did, he leaned over with his hands clasped together as if in prayer. His sapphire eyes met Rebeka's. "I've never shared this with anybody, not even Roger."
She started to say something, but he held up his hand. "I need to share. While in med school, there was a young girl, Lacy. Lacy was an undergraduate, a sophomore, I think. One evening I was in the library doing research. She was at the next table crying. I attempted to ignore her but couldn't. She said she'd had a fight with her boyfriend. We talked, and I convinced her it wasn't the end of the world."
"This doesn't surprise me. You're very caring."
"I met Lacy again, this time after a football game. She was wandering the universities' quad area stumbling drunk and close to passing out. I took her to my place to keep her safe. She slept it off. The following morning, she told me she had a new boyfriend who was in a fraternity, and they'd started drinking before the game, kept it up during the game, and after the game."
"Why wasn't she with her new friend?"
"Don't' know. But pretty sure, he and his friends had taken advantage of her condition. She either wouldn't share or didn't remember. Her clothes were in disarray and some were missing."
When Tyler exhaled, Rebeka asked, "It gets worse, doesn't it?"
"It does. She'd randomly show up at my apartment either drunk, high, or at least not in good shape. I allowed her to sleep it off. I tried talking with her about her choices but got nowhere." He paused. "I should've pushed harder but was busy with med school or maybe wasn't mature enough myself."
Tyler got up, got a drink of water, before he sat again. "I started doing volunteer runs with the emergency response teams. One late afternoon, we got a call."
He took a deep breath and wiped his eyes. "It was Lacy. Attempted suicide. She'd slit her wrists with a broken bottle. We got to her in time. I sat with her during the night. The following day her parents arrived. Last I heard she went into rehab. I lost touch with her."
Rebeka closed her eyes. "I'm sorry."
"I know you're not Lacy, but I also know you're a young lady in need and I can help. I'm not making a mistake like that again."
Tyler stood and answered the door. "Good. I was worried this wasn't going to make it."
When he closed the door and turned around, Rebeka asked, "What's that?"
He held up a coat. "I'm tired of you swimming in Aunt Beth's coat. I hope this will work." He helped her put it on.
"It fits perfectly. Thank you, but you shouldn't have. I do have a coat in Dallas."
"Now, you have two."
"Ty, you need to stop doing this."
He winked as he answered his phone. "Hi Missy." He checked the time. "Sorry, time got away from me. I'm glad you called."
After Rebeka and Lily spoke for a few minutes, Rebeka went into the bathroom to get ready for bed.
When Tyler said goodnight to Lily and put his phone away, he studied Rebeka and grinned. "I know you're uncomfortable with us sharing a bed, but if you hang off the edge like that, you're going to end up on the floor. Either you move over, or I'm sleeping on the couch. Your choice."
When Rebeka scooted over a little, Tyler said, "Move a little more." She did. "Still more."
She exhaled. "Is this enough?"
"Barely, but I'll accept it. Goodnight."

I know you've already noticed. I didn't post yesterday because it was Easter. Although none of my boys and their families came home, we were able to speak to each one though FaceTime. It was wonderful. It would have been better to have them home, but I'll take what I get.
Thank you, FanStory for a created image of a hotel's king size bed. Chapter 5 is a long chapter, and so I'm posting it in two different parts. This is part two. It has a little under 1900 words. TODAY'S POST:
Chapter 6 A
Tyler woke up early Friday morning and grinned at Rebeka cuddled beside him. He checked his position on the bed. I'm not the one who moved. He chuckled. I'd better get up before she wakes up and has a meltdown.
He finished in the bathroom and wrote a quick note. Pretty sure I'll be back with breakfast before she wakes up.
*****
With two hotel breakfasts in his hands, he maneuvered the door and then checked Rebeka. Good, she's still asleep. He set down the plates, sat, and sipped coffee. I'll let her sleep. Maybe I should contact the front desk and request a later checkout.
Before he finished breakfast and made that call, Rebeka woke up and stretched. Tyler asked, "How'd you sleep?"
"The best sleep I've had in a long while." She noticed her position on the bed. "What happened?"
"I'm not the one who moves while sleeping."
Her cheeks glowed pink. "I'm so sorry."
"I'm not worried about it, so don't be." He held up his stethoscope. "Can I get your blood pressure? We need to decide if we're heading home or staying another day."
"Sure." She held out her arm.
With the blood pressure complete, Tyler grinned. "Not good but the best one for the past couple of days. Maybe cuddling beside me helped."
She grabbed her clothes as she headed toward the bathroom. "I doubt it. It had to be the salmon." As she closed the door, she heard Tyler chuckling, and she said, "You enjoyed that way too much."
"I heard that, Buttercup, and you're right. I did." He paused. "Breakfast is waiting."
A while later, the bathroom door opened, Rebeka folded her pajamas and almost whispered, "The pajamas are really nice, but when we get back to your place can I still wear your T-shirt at night?"
"Of course. You can wear it as long as you want. If you'd like, I can give you more."
"One is enough." She rushed, "I'm ready for breakfast."
What's that about? Maybe it means she's starting to trust me. Tyler grinned to himself, used the microwave, and warmed her breakfast. He set the breakfast on the table. "Please enjoy. When you're finished, we'll evaluate the situation and decide if we're driving back now or waiting until later."
"What time's checkout?"
"Don't worry about that. We can always request a later one."
Rebeka ate, avoiding eye contact. He watched and finally said, "I thought we agreed last night we were going to be open with each other. I know something's bothering you. Maybe we should talk it out. What's going on?"
She studied the bed.
"You still haven't said anything, but now I know what's bothering you. Yes, you moved beside me. Yes, when I woke up my arm was around you. I can promise nothing happened. Don't let this bother you. It doesn't bother me. It was innocent."
"Maybe it happens all the time for you, but this is a first for me."
"I'm sure that's true, but maybe you can look at it a little differently. There have been a couple of occasions where I've held you to comfort you. Maybe I held you in a reclining position instead of a standing one."
She tilted her head. "That's a pretty big leap."
"A little. It helped lower your blood pressure and today you haven't said anything about cramping. I may have to talk with Heather about prescribing it."
Her eyes widened. "You wouldn't dare!"
Tyler chuckled. "If it helps you deliver a healthy baby, I'd do almost anything."
He reached over and touched her hand as he continued, "There are situations where all the medicine in the world won't help but trusting somebody will."
She didn't comment but studied his eyes.
His thumb rubbed the top of her hand. "It's a strong possibility your high blood pressure is influenced by the stress in your life."
She swallowed. "I know."
"After you eat, I'll take your blood pressure, again, and test your sugar. How's the cramping?"
"I haven't had any so far today."
"Great. How about spotting?"
"Very slight."
"We're making progress."
Once Rebeka finished breakfast, she held out her arm. "Blood pressure?"
Tyler held up the stethoscope. "I guess you're ready."
He put the cuff around her arm, and she said, "Thank you for this dress. It's pretty."
"I hoped you'd like the color. I thought it would look nice on you." He paused. "I'm pretty sure this is a topic that's not discussed in mixed company, but it has access for nursing."
She avoided eye contact. "It is and it does." After he chuckled, she said, "Do you enjoy embarrassing me?"
"Not really, but your reactions are priceless. I do enjoy them." A few moments later, he removed the blood pressure cuff. "Not good but better than most." He held up the lance. "A finger please."
"What happens when I run out of fingers?"
Tyler winked. "We'll worry about that when it happens." He checked the reading. "Again, not good, but better than most." He studied her for a few moments. "Want to go home?" He grinned. "Well, back to my place. It is okay if I call it home?"
She nodded with a slight smile and almost whispered, "Yes."
"Before we leave you need to promise if you start cramping or the spotting get heavier, you'll tell me." Tyler's eyes met hers. "Promise?" When she nodded, he said, "I need to hear you say it."
"I promise."
*****
Tyler opened the hotel room door for Rebeka. "No!" She backed away as people shouted questions and cameras flashed.
Tyler closed and locked the door. "I have no idea how they found us. Have a seat. I'll talk with them and try to get them to leave."
Once Rebeka was comfortable, Tyler opened the door. "I'm not sure what you're doing, but there's no story. I'll meet you outside Longhorn Creek's courthouse at," he glanced at his watch; "four o'clock and I'll answer your questions. This is a one-time offer, and you'll have to agree to leave this area now and leave us alone after the press conference."
The reporters moved away, and Tyler went back into the room. Rebeka studied him for a few moments. "What did you do?"
"I'm hoping this will get them to leave. You don't need stress. Maybe after I answer some questions, they won't bother you again."
*****
Tyler held the bags. "I'll take these to the car, move the car closer, and check us out. Don't open the door for anybody except me. I'll text you when I'm at the door."
Rebeka nodded. "I hope you're right about leaving us alone. Do you have a plan?"
"Not yet." Tyler glanced at his phone. "I have about seven hours to think of one." He opened the door. "I'll be back in a few minutes."
*****
Forty-five minutes into the silent drive, Tyler's phone rang. He clicked the accept button on the steering wheel for the hands-free call. Roger's voice was heard, "Buddy, what were you thinking when you agreed to do this news conference?"
"How'd you hear about it?"
"It's all-over social media. Amber saw it. It's going to be recorded and aired on tonight's news. It's billed as 'Most eligible bachelor and the queen of romance have baby together.' Or something like that. I might not have the exact words."
Tyler glanced at Rebeka and saw tears trickling down her cheeks. "This isn't good. I'm hoping once they realize there isn't a story, they'll leave Beka alone." He exhaled. "I need your help. I'll call once we're home. We need a strategy." They hung up.
Tyler reached over and touched Rebeka's hand. "I'm sorry. My intention was for them to leave you alone."
Rebeka nodded but remained silent.
A few minutes later, Tyler glanced at Rebeka and noticed her rubbing her stomach. "You're cramping again, aren't you?" When she avoided eye contact, he sighed. "I already know the answer. As soon as I find a place to pull off, I will. Maybe walking around and stretching will help."
He pulled into a gas station, walked around, and opened the passenger door. She accepted his offered hand to help her out. As Rebeka stood, Tyler drew her into a hug. His right hand held her head while his left hand caressed her back. He started to kiss her forehead but stopped. She might take that as improper.
As the hug lingered, Rebeka put her arms around Tyler. He felt her relax, before he said, "While you walk around, I'll get gas, then take your blood pressure. After that we'll find a place to eat." He handed her his bank card. "Get yourself something to drink and anything else you might want." He grabbed some paper from the glovebox and wrote some numbers. "My pin number. I could use a black coffee."
Rebeka held up the bank card. "Are you sure about this?"
"If I expect you to trust me, I need to trust you. First of next week, I'll get you your own card."
"With Roger's help, I'll have my own money. I'm not destitute."
"I understand, but until then, you shouldn't have to ask for everything."
Inside the gas station, Rebeka bought Tyler's coffee, a bottle of water, and Lily a cute little stuffed goat. She put the goat inside her purse.
At the SUV, Tyler asked, "How's the cramping?"
"A little better."
He took a sip of the coffee. "Thank you. How about the spotting?"
"About the same."
"All right. Any thoughts on lunch?"
"I'm fine right now, if you are." When he nodded, Rebeka continued, "Why don't we continue? If we get hungry, then we can stop."
"I'll agree to that, but only if you agree to communicate your needs." He studied her eyes. "I don't want to guess."
She gave him a partial smile. "Deal."
"We're making progress." He opened the SUV door for her. "Let's hit the road."
About an hour later, Rebeka checked the car's clock. Tyler noticed. "You hungry?"
"A little, but we'll be home in about an hour. I can wait."
"I'm sure you can but because of your sugar level issues you need to eat at regular intervals and it's almost a half an hour late. We'll stop as soon as we find a place. What do you feel like?"
"I don't know. Anything you chose will be fine."
"Is this because I'm paying? If you were paying, what would you choose?"
Rebeka stared at him. "Really?"
"I'm serious. What would you get for yourself?" She was silent, so he said, "I'm waiting."
After passing a semitruck, Tyler glanced at her. "Have you decided?"
"Probably a grilled chicken salad."
"Thank you. I appreciate the input." He hesitated. "You need to speak up for yourself. That wasn't hard, was it?" When she didn't answer, he continued, "You can practice on me while you're living with me."
"I'll consider it."
Tyler chuckled. After reading the next billboard, he said, "Looks like there's a place at the next exit. We'll get off there."
*****
On the outskirts of Longhorn Creek, Tyler said, "I have a little less than three hours to decide what I'm going to say to the reporters. I hope Roger has some suggestions."
Rebeka didn't comment.
Tyler parked Elizabeth's SUV in the garage and opened the door for Rebeka. "I hope you're ready for Aunt Beth's way too many questions."
Inside the house Elizabeth hurried to them and hugged Rebeka. "I'm glad you're back. I was worried." She then hugged Tyler. "I hope you behaved yourself."
"Aunt Beth, I did the best I could under the circumstances. We'll discuss it later. Right now, I need to call Roger."
"Ty, what did you do?"
"We'll talk later."
Elizabeth took Rebeka's hand. "Let's have a cup of tea and you can fill me in on what my nephew did. I hope he didn't make the situation worse."
Rebeka explained her father's comments about her pregnancy, Tyler and her father's argument, and ended with the reporters.
"I can understand Ty's anger with your father." Elizabeth took a sip of tea. "I'm sure it didn't help the situation."
"I'm pretty sure nothing would've helped. Tyler only stood up for me."
"That he did. I understand why you needed to rest yesterday."
"The cramping was really bad."
"Is it better today?"
Rebeka nodded. "It is." She turned her head when she heard Tyler's elevated voice. "That doesn't sound good."
"You're right," said Elizabeth. "What time does he need to leave for this press conference?"
"It's supposed to start at four."
"Are you going?" asked Elizabeth.
"Ty's doing it himself."
"Good. I think it's best you remain here. Ty can handle it."
More loud words came from the den. "Are you sure?" asked Rebeka.
"I'm sure."
Rebeka stood. "I'm going to my room."
"Probably a good idea."

Thank you, FanStory for a created image of a goat. I wanted a Beanie Baby goat like the one Rebeka bought Lily, but this little guy is so cute. I just had to use him.
Chapter 6 is another long chapter, and so I'm posting it in two different parts. This is part one. It has a little over 2100 words. I played around this the length of this post. No matter how I did it either this post or next weeks was going to be longer than normal. I decided this was the best place to split the chapter. I'm posting it even higher than I normally do so you'll be rewarded for reading. I had hoped to write that this time I had not make any changes. Not such luck. I hope I didn't make it worse. Thank you for taking your time to read and write a review. |
