'My lower abdomen and belly?'

'The day I died was just the perfect New England day!'
'It was a fall morning and I was mourning for a ride.'
'I decided at 12 mile bike ride home from work along the Connecticut shoreline.'

'Sure I was sturdy.'
'And, as strong as a bull!'
'Yes, and an athlete indeed!'
'I was a CO-ordinator and program supervisor at "Peaceland."
'We work with kids whom could possibly become Future Leaders.'
'My husband's name is John and he was home.'
'As a Mail carrier.'
'He had an exhausting job!'

'I told my friend Mary Scott that we would meet afterwards for a chat.'
'And, a possible drink later but I would never make that date.'

'I was riding along Route 72 in the right lane with traffic.'
'I was semi keeping up with traffic on a downhill.'
'And, then there was a slight incline.'
'There was a large truck.'

'Yes, pulling out into the traffic lane.'
'He made a complete stop but as I was approaching?'
'He suddenly sped up!'

'All I could feel was the bike going down under his front wheels!'
'And, that was when I started to pray!'
'On that's fine fall Connecticut day?'
But when the other set of wheels ran me over a second time?'
'I prayed to God that I would die!'

The truck sped up and kept on going!'
'But it seemed like the whole world slowed down?'
'This one man stopped his car and also stopped that truck!'
'Another man got out of his car with a heated blanket.'
'He went over to the woman who was holding my head up.'
'He told the next woman who had just approached.'
'To lay the blanket over my abdomen.'
'Which was exposed and ripped opened!'
'And, the other woman to continue holding my head up.'

'I kept on fading in and out of consciousness.'
'But they say the ambulance arrived in less than 20 minutes to take me to the hospital.'
'All I can remember is the doors opening up and daylight starting to shine through?'
'But at this point it was about 9:00 at night!'

'I was told that they could not control the bleeding.'
'My lower pelvic bone was shattered and that helps hold your inner abdomen together.'
"I had a severed artery in my one arm.'
'My abdomen was exposed but swollen as if I was six months pregnant!'
'And, to make things worse there was rocks and sediment inside of me from the truck's tires.'

'Thank God over 100 people came to my rescue when the news went out for blood.'
'The next three hours was spent reviving me and resuscitating me.'
'Yes, with chest compressions as I kept on dying.'
'They had three people taking turns cuz it was so exhausting!'

'They finally stabilize me but I had gone through over 70 pints of blood!'
'They said at one point I wasn't registering a Heartbeat!'
'Yes, I was losing blood so quickly!'

'When I was coming in and out of consciousness?'
'The pain was tremendous.'
'Because I kept struggling so much; they decided to put me in a coma induced state of being.'
'And, this is where I would remain cuz I would wait for my date with Destiny and Fate.'
'To live or to die?'
'Yes, for the next 30 days.'

'It's funny how much pain human body can learn to accept especially in a short period of only weeks.'
'The nurse will come in regularly and clean My wounds and it was horrible!'
'They think when they self induce you in a coma you're completely unconscious.'
'I was semi-conscious.'
...
'My body would transmit the cleaning and all the pain as if a nightmare of torture!'
'And, the problem was I wanted to scream but I couldn't!'
'Being in the induced coma will also atrophy your vocal cords!'

'But the one good thing in my favor was my husband John!'
'I could hear his voice but I could not respond nor see him!'
'I could feel him holding my hand and then I could also feel him when he would rub the back of my neck which was tremendously beautiful!'

'Grace it's me John!'
'And, I'm here with you!'
'And, I'm not leaving you until you go home!'

'The nurse said that John stayed for a full week.'
"Yes!'
'And, he was there every day.'
'And, every hour.'
'And, he would sleep next to my bed in a chair.'
'Until they brought a cot in for him.'

'They finally talked him into going home to take a shower and get something to eat.'
'He said when he was home taking a shower.'
'He missed me so much that he couldn't stop Crying!'
'So, he had to run back to me!'

'In closing.;
'Yes, to this very day?'
'I don't know why I'm still here?'
'They told me I was lucky to be alive!'
(Let alone that I would ever walk again?)

'I decided to start a charity for paraplegic athletes who were wheelchair-bound.'
'In one week time I raised $10, 000.'
'I had no idea how many fans I had from all over the world who were praying for me!'

'That's when I decided I would get out of that bed and take my first step!'
'Yes, because people were depending on me!'
'I will admit I fell flat on my face but I made that step!'
'Yes!'
'And, then I made the next one!'
'And, the following!'

Note: Grace was transferred for eight months into Gaylord which is a rehab.
In her own words; and ten months after she died...
And, Eight months after leaving Gaylord.
She ran in "The Superhero Half Marathon"
...
This event took place in New Jersey.
She did it while using a walker; toting a colostomy bag; and dressed as Wonder Woman!
Yes, with the cape and all!
And, at the finish Line?
She was greeted by her husband John who smothered her in kisses!
Since then her colostomy bag has been removed and she has competed in dozens of races sans Walker.

What this amazing Amazon endured was a Nightmare!
Yes but every time she crossed that finish Line?
She thinks of all the strangers!
Yes who literally gave of themselves so much!
Yes, such a diverse group of people!
Black, White, Brown of all ages!
And, backgrounds!
Who came together and conspired together!
Yes, to help a fellow human being.
..
Her injuries made her realize just how lucky she was to have her husband John.
And, ven in her darkest of moments?Being locked in that coma?
His voice soothes her and to this very day!
And, with each step she now takes?
For she it will always be!
