Prologue
Starting Off

By Debra White

Starting off
as I intend.

Little time
have I to spend.

Hope to make
it to the end -
Ev'ry day a poem penned.

Author Notes I haven't entered the member sponsored NaPoWriMo contest, but thought I'd have a go at writing a poem a day for the month of April anyway! My aim is to write a rhymed whitney every day. Thank you for reading me :)

Chapter 1
The Joke's On Me

By Debra White

Time to write
some poetry -
Pristine page
in front of me,
pen in hand
but mind empty.
April Fool - the joke's on me!

Author Notes Writer's block, already! Sheesh!

Chapter 2
Dance Me

By Debra White

Dance me 'cross
the kitchen floor.
Thrill me to
my very core.
Still the one
that I adore -
Never have I loved you more.

Chapter 3
Happy Hound

By Debra White

Molly loves
this stick she found.
Overjoyed
she bounds around.
Prancing paws
don't touch the ground -
She is such a happy hound!

Author Notes Photograph is of Molly with her beloved stick. It was impossible to get an action shot, she's way too fast!

Chapter 4
The Fourth Of The Fourth

By Debra White

Favourite day
of April's here!
Guess who's full
of birthday cheer?
Made it through
another year! -
Care to join me for a beer?

Author Notes So today is the 4th of the 4th and I'm 44 years young... Cool huh?!

Chapter 5
Whoop!

By Debra White

Easter break
is here at last.
Two weeks off,
let's have a blast!
Hope the days
don't fly too fast.
Fam'ly fun - time unsurpassed.

Author Notes Today has been a long time coming! I'm so ready for a couple of weeks chill-time with my family.

Unsurpassed - Anything unsurpassed is the very best, superior to anything else.

Chapter 6
The Perfect Gift

By Debra White

Mum and Dad
so gen'rously,
chose my gift
so thoughtfully;
Night away,
just Shaun and me -
What a lovely luxury!

Author Notes It was my birthday a couple of days ago. (I know, you know!)

My amazingly thoughtful parents have booked a night away for my husband Shaun and I, at a very fancy restaurant (Winteringham Fields - check it out online!) Proud sister alert...! My little brother, Gaz, just so happens to be head chef :)

Anyway, tonight is the night (whoop!) Mum and dad are looking after our children (and Molly the dog!) and will also have Sunday lunch ready for us when we get back tomorrow!

A little us-time is just what we need and I feel so blessed :)

Chapter 7
Sorry, Not Sorry!

By Debra White

Sorry guys,
I missed a day!
Weekend fun
got in the way.
We all need
some time to play -
Hope this catch-up rhyme's okay!

Author Notes Had a fabulous, but very busy, weekend, courtesy of my parents (as per my previous poem, The Perfect Gift) so I just didn't get around to writing my daily poem for NaPoWriMo yesterday. Hope this catch-up one counts!

Chapter 8
Pet Hate

By Debra White

Gossiping -
Pet hate of mine.
Spreading lies
like pois'nous vine.
Vicious tongues
like flashing knives -
Mindlessly destroying lives.

Author Notes No explanation needed. I hate gossip...

Chapter 9
Whitney's Beat

By Debra White

Here's a beat
you've heard before -
one, two three,
one, two, three, four.
Chugs along
just like a train -
Whitney's rhythm in my brain!

Author Notes I dread to think what my brain will be like by the end of the month! I think in Whitney syllable count already!

Chapter 10
Girl Hero

By Debra White

Holiday
revision's tough,
'specially when
you're feeling rough.
Never one
to huff and puff -
Katie's made of stronger stuff.

Author Notes My daughter, Katie, has so much homework to do over the Easter holidays.
She has her Year 6 SATs to sit in May, so has lots of test papers and revision to do.
She's not feeling too well today, but stepped up to do a test paper this afternoon anyway...What a warrior!

I titled this poem 'Girl Hero' because of her resilience (and I robbed it from the logo on her t'shirt in the photograph!)

Chapter 11
How To Make A Quick Buck

By Debra White

Please don't take
me for a schmuck!
Same said last
eight times you struck...
Scand'lous way
to make a buck -
Cut and paste reviewers SUCK

Author Notes I've got a bee in my bonnet tonight!

Better out than in - nothing beats a good rant :D

I just cannot stand when reviewers cut and paste reviews. I discovered today, that a review I have received is the exact same as the reviews given to at least seven other poems that they reviewed in succession.

It is an insult to the writers (have they even bothered to read the poems??) and more than a little bit cheeky - talk about making a quick buck (even if the currency is funny money!)

Anyway....said my piece now! (And I didn't use the obvious rhyme word befitting my mood LOL!)

schmuck: jerk

Chapter 12
Better Things To Do

By Debra White

Planting beans
with Bex and Kate
was a plan
I'd thought first rate.
They did not
agree with me -
said they'd rather watch TV.

Author Notes Once upon a time, my daughters loved to plant beans with me.
When did it become uncool?!

I planted the beans on my own :(

Chapter 13
Hiding

By Debra White

Once there was
a little lass;
tough as nails,
a real badass.
Deep down she
was nice as pie -
hard-nosed to disguise the shy.

Author Notes For my little lass...x

Chapter 14
The Slipper Thief

By Debra White

Molly Dog
(the slipper thief)
looked at me
in disbelief
'cause I took
my slipper back
without trading for a snack.

Author Notes Image is of our dog, Molly, holding my slipper hostage!

A Whitney is a seven line poem with a syllable count of 3/4/3/4/3/4/7 respectively.

Chapter 15
Jaunt of the Day

By Debra White

Picnic packed,
we did embark
on a jaunt
to Weelsby Park.
Braved the cold,
embraced the fun -
Shame we didn’t see the sun!

Author Notes It was so cold today, but we did not want to stay indoors!

Chapter 16
Once Again

By Debra White

Once again
I fell behind,
didn't find
myself inclined
or inspired
much yesterday,
so I'll double up today :)

Author Notes Yesterday ran away with me and I didn't get around to writing a Whitney to add to my NaPoWriMo book. Hope this one is acceptable to slot in for the 16th!

Chapter 17
Peas

By Debra White

Planting peas
with Ben today -
Suddenly
he turned to say,
that he'd try
our home-grown peas.
Then he winked...the little tease!

Author Notes Our 13 year old son Ben, is a tease, a torment and has vegephobia!

I enjoyed a lovely afternoon in the garden with the whole family today. Between us, we planted peas, sprouts, cabbages, beetroots and more beans and we also (or should I say the girls and Shaun!) made a bug hotel and a wooden maze for the guinea pigs! It's been so nice :)

Chapter 18
I Make A Wish

By Debra White

Siblings climb
the iron fish.
One, two, three,
I make a wish -
that they'll stay
forever friends
(or at least 'til night descends!)

Author Notes My children are an absolute joy (except when they're together!!) I do wish they wouldn't argue so much!

Photo of Ben, Katie and Rebecca, taken today on our walk. There is a lake close by to this sculpture of a fish.

Chapter 19
Magic Shoes

By Debra White

Finally,
new running shoes!
Shoes to chase
away the blues.
Shoes to put
me back on track.
Shoes to bring my old self back.

Author Notes I don't quite know how it works, but I have to run to keep me sane. It's been a couple of months since I last ran and I can feel myself starting to feel off kilter.

The photo is of my new running shoes - may they work their magic soon!

Chapter 20
Beautiful

By Debra White

Choc'late smile,
the ice cream kind.
'Beautiful'
springs to my mind.
Better give
those lips a lick,
'fore I take a photo. Quick!

Author Notes Rebecca REALLY enjoyed her chocolate ice cream!

Chapter 21
Boom Meringue!

By Debra White

Boom Meringue;
A scrumptious sweet.
Crunchy, light,
the perfect treat.
Choc'late eggs,
meringue and cream -
Ev'ry pudding lover's dream.

Author Notes This morning, Rebecca (our 8yr old daughter) asked me if I would make a boomerang for after lunch.

When I asked her what she meant, she said "that delicious pudding with the chocolate eggs."

So glad she didn't want me to make a stick that comes back when you throw it!

This dessert (pictured and hand made with love by moi, this morning) will now forever be known as 'Boom Meringue!"

Chapter 22
Calm Before The Storm

By Debra White

Happy snap
of smiling kids,
just before
they hit the skids.
Ben fell first,
followed by Bex -
I won't share what happened next!

Author Notes Nobody got hurt, but let's just say that our lovely day out ended there and then. Fortunately, we'd already enjoyed the ice-cream part!

Chapter 23
Time Flies

By Debra White

First day back
at work today
after two
weeks holiday :(
Funny how
times flies so fast
when you're having such a blast.

Author Notes I had the back to work blues this morning. As much as I enjoy my job, it's much nicer to be at home spending time with my family.

Chapter 24
Yesterday

By Debra White

Yesterday
I didn't write.
Ben gave us
a dreadful fright.
Restlessly,
we spent the night.
Thankfully, our son's alright.

Author Notes Ben, our 13 year old son, had a mountain bike accident yesterday. He broke his nose, chipped his shoulder and has multiple cuts and bruises. He can't remember what happened. It could've been a lot worse, thankfully he was wearing his helmet. He is now recovering at home after spending the night and much of today in hospital.

Chapter 25
Take Away

By Debra White

Take Away
for tea tonight,
finishing
the day off right.
Special treat,
I’m off the hook -
Curry’s served, no need to cook :)

Author Notes Today has been lovely. I slept in until 8:30, went for a two hour walk with Shaun, the girls and Molly. Then Shaun and I went to Ikea, wardrobe shopping. I wanted to buy the whole shop! By the time we got home it was getting on for 6pm. I asked Shaun what he fancied for tea and he said 'don't worry about cooking, I'll treat us all to a take away from the Aagrah!' I wasn't about to argue!

I was too eager to get stuck into my curry and didn't think to take a picture to illustrate my poem. Therefore, the photograph is courtesy of seshadri_sreenivasan at FanArtReview, to whom I give my thanks :)

Chapter 26
Silver Lined

By Debra White

Rainy days
are here again.
Sunshine's gone
and clouds remain.
Silver lined!
The seedlings show -
Love to watch my garden grow!

Author Notes Always look on the bright side!

Photograph of my scarecrow, Sam. He's keeping an eye on the garden for me!

A Whitney is a seven line poem with a syllable count of 3/4/3/4/3/4/7 respectively.

Chapter 27
Idling

By Debra White

Idling on
a rainbow crest,
savouring
my bestest rest.
Chores stack up
whilst I'm away -
Let them stack, they'll wait a day!

Author Notes Sometimes, all we need is a rainbow to relax upon!

And yeah, I know that bestest isn't an actual word! ;)

Chapter 28
Gardening

By Debra White

Gardening -
My great escape!
Veggie plot
is taking shape.
Hope to have
a bumper year;
Won't be long 'til shoots appear :)

Author Notes Gardening, along with running are my two great escapes from 'everything.' I spent a lovely hour in the garden this evening. It's starting to take shape again :)

Photograph taken just now - it looks a little empty, but give it a couple of weeks, those beds are gonna get bushy! I've planted peas, beetroot and salad leaves so far. The photograph shows about a third of the whole veg garden.

A Whitney is a seven line poem with a syllable count of 3/4/3/4/3/4/7 respectively.

Chapter 29
The Penultimate Whitney

By Debra White

Thirtieth
of April's here -
Whitney's month
is almost clear.
Just
one more,
my mind is numb!
Dum-de-Dum-de-Dum-de-Dum ;)

Author Notes 29 down, 1 to go!

By Debra White

Thirty poems
in thirty days.

Gimme some
Hip-Hip-Hoorays!
Thanks for your
encouragement...
You don't know HOW MUCH it's meant :) x

Author Notes To every single person who has read and reviewed the Whitneys I have written for this year's NaPoWriMo challenge - THANK YOU!

Your encouragement has been amazing AND... I PROMISE to not subject you to any more rhymed Whitneys for at least the next six months! Well done, y'all. You're free to go! xx
