"Musings Of My Muddled Mind"

Prologue
NaPoWriMo Challenge: Prologue

By Debra White

Within the pages of this little book
I'll share the musings of my muddled mind.
I hope that you will pause to take a look
although, just now, I'm not sure what you'll find!

Inspiration flickers
then my kids crash in--
train of thought
derails.

This NaPoWriMo challenge could be tough,
but I'm a lass who strives to see things through.
A poem a day this month is what I'll scribe
within the pages of this little book.

Author Notes This is the prologue for my book 'Musings Of My Muddled Mind', for the NaPoWriMo writing prompt challenge.

How this book turns out will be as much of a surprise to me, as it will be for you!

With no set format planned, we are literally at the mercy of my muddled mind and the children responsible for muddling it.... Ben (10), Katie (8) and Rebecca (5). I'm pretty sure that they will make an appearance or two along the way!

Thank you for reading my poetry :)

NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is an annual project in which participating poets attempt to write a poem a day for the month of April.

DORSIMBRA: The Dorsimbra, a poetry form created by Eve Braden, Frieda Dorris and Robert Simonton, is a set form of three stanzas of four lines each.
Stanza One: Four lines of iambic pentameter, rhymed abab.
Stanza Two: Four lines of short and snappy free verse.
Stanza Three: Four lines of iambic pentameter blank verse, where the last line repeats the first line of Stanza One.

Chapter 1
Roly-Polying Peas

By Debra White

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

My peas are being troublesome,
they won't stay on my spoon.
They've roly-polied round my plate
since I sat down at noon.

Why are they playing hard to get?
I wish they wouldn't tease,
'cos Mummy said there's no dessert
'til I eat all my peas.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Author Notes Inspired by Katie's pea-eating-avoidance-tactics this lunchtime!

Chapter 2
A Busy Day

By Debra White

Well, what a bunch of mucky scruffs!
(The kids, their dad and me.)
Caked up in sludge and other stuff,
a filthy family!

We've had ourselves a busy day.
(Productive, dirty, fun.)
I reckon that we've earned a rest,
a cuppa and a bun.

Author Notes Inspired by our busy day today...it's been non-stop for all of us - tiring and dirty but productive :) - Hardly any grumbling too, so buns all round! (Hurrah!)

Chapter 3
Birthday Eve

By Debra White

Pre birthday drinks with
my husband, or my best friend?

It had to be both!

Author Notes Inspired by the no-brainer of a dilemma faced this evening.
I got a baby sitter and spent a great night with my husband Shaun and my best friend Julie - we didn't win the quiz or the bingo, but had a lovely time together :)
I'm 41 tomorrow - Cheers!

Chapter 4
Birthday Bike Ride

By Debra White

Birthday bike ride - Fifty K!
Cheerful chatter on the way.

Destination; Birkin Cafe.
Tasty treats and lots of laughs.

Journey back not so much fun -
tired legs and aching bum!

Author Notes Inspired by my first proper road-bike ride today with Shaun....Yes, we cycled 50 kilometres and it was my birthday treat! LOL - I'm very saddle sore and I probably won't be able to walk in the morning, but funnily enough, I rather enjoyed the experience and we spent some much needed time together :)

Cafe - pronounced in this instance as 'caff'
At Birkin Cafe, (also known as Birkin Fisheries Tearooms) Shaun treated me to a bacon and egg butty with a pot of tea followed by Victoria sponge cake :) Yummy!

Bum - bottom/posterior/arse/butt...... whatever you may call it, mine hurts. A lot!

I really do think I need a crocheted saddle cover - it could make the whole experience much more comfortable!

Chapter 5
First Day Back At Work

By Debra White

My first day back at work today.
(Not as expected, shall we say!)

Thrown in the deep end, swim or sink.
(I faced the challenge well, I think!)

Stepped into shoes not worn before.
(I wondered if they'd make me sore.)

But no! They fit me like a glove--
it seems I've found the job I love!

Author Notes Inspired by my first day back to work today.

I work 1:1 with a 6yr old boy who is severely autistic... Im usually responsible for him over the lunch time period, but today when I got to school, I was asked to stay on with him all afternoon instead of doing my usual shift in the preschool class for the rest of this week.

Although Lukas and I have a great 'relationship' I have to admit to being more than a little apprehensive as I know first hand that he can be challenging, to put it mildly!

Anyway, we had a fabulous afternoon - he was happy, I was happy - job well done! Bring on tomorrow :)

Chapter 6
I'm Sorry!

By Debra White

I feel the seconds ticking by,
it's half past ten at night.
I've just sat down, first time all day
and I'm still yet to write
some poetry to share with you.
Alas! My mind is blank,
but look, the lines above all rhyme...
I'm sorry this one doesn't!

(LOL!)

Author Notes Inspired by the painful awareness that I have taken on a challenge (this NaPoWriMo writing prompt!) that I may not be able to nail... I really do wish there were more hours in the day!

Chapter 7
The Only Way is Up

By Debra White

I ran up Elmsall Hill today --
a quarter mile of pain,
finale of my morning jog
and in torrential rain.

The thing is, I live at the top,
so when my run was done,
the only way back home was up
and up-running ain't fun.

Author Notes Inspired by my morning run today. The weather was against me, the hill was against me (as usual!) and I knew the cupboards were bare at home - so no motivation to spur me on either!

Chapter 8
Friday the Eighth?

By Debra White

The date must be wrong...
Today really could've been
Friday the thirteenth.

Author Notes Inspired by the unfortunate events of today...none of which I'll go into right now as I'm too exhausted :(

Artwork courtesy of Liilia at FanArtReview, thank you.

Chapter 9
A Poem of Two Journeys

By Debra White

Journey There

There he sits--
the Preacher
in his passenger seat pulpit,
spouting forth.

I grit my teeth,
nod my head,
commit each. and. every. word.
to memory,
storing it
for future reference.

Journey Back

There he sits--
King of the Road
on his throne.

Up the arse
of the car in front.

I grit my teeth,
nod my head,
remind him
of this morning's sermon.

It
goes
down
exactly. as. anticipated.

One point to me.
(Not that I'm counting...!)

Author Notes Inspired by my hypocritical back-seat-driving husband. Love him really ;)

Chapter 10
Time's Up

By Debra White

Today's writing time
swallowed up by reviewing...
No second helping.

Author Notes Inspired by the shortage of time I seem to have at the moment.
The pressure of NaPoWriMo is actually taking over my life....yet life must go on!
I'm painfully aware that I don't have time to review or reply so I've tried to do some of that today...

Chapter 11
Ill Equipped to Entertain

By Debra White

I don't think I will write today.
It seems I've nothing much to say,
with missing muse and empty brain.
I'm ill equipped to entertain
with winsome words composed just right
and so, I'm off to bed -- good night.

Author Notes Inspiration taken from the empty space between my ears...:(

Chapter 12
Shush!

By Debra White

Keep yourself out of our business,
your sour opinions fall flat.
Our children are ours to parent our way,
no matter what you think of that.

I'm fed up of your interfering,
you constantly tread on our toes.
You prod and you poke and you push your way in --
your obstinance gets up my nose.

It's not that your view doesn't matter,
it's just that our views matter more!
Our kids want for nothing. They're healthy. They're loved.
So Shush! (or I'll show you the door!)

Author Notes Inspired by the constant and tiresome interference of a well meaning (yet resolutely pessimistic) relative. I feel somewhat better after releasing some frustration!

Chapter 13
April Achiever (Almost!)

By Debra White

April challenges:
Run ten K sub sixty - Nailed
NaPoWriMo - Next

Author Notes Inspired by my first ever 10 kilometer run this morning....

I set myself two challenges for April - to run 10K and to complete NaPoWriMo

I nailed the 10k in 59:13 - I'm so proud of myself!!

I only hope that I can conquer challenge number two!

Chapter 14
Another One...

By Debra White

Here I go again...
Another five-seven-five.
I'm boring myself :(

Author Notes Inspired by nothing. Literally :(
Hoping a good night sleep returns my mojo to me...
Sincere apologies... if I'm boring myself, goodness knows how you must feel reading me. X

Chapter 15
Here You Still Are

By Debra White

What are you doing here?
I asked you
to leave
ages ago.

Yet
here you still are --
taking up space
in my heart.

Author Notes Inspired by matters of the heart.

Artwork courtesy of Lndslmn at FanArtReview.

Chapter 16
Running, Not Running

By Debra White

My new running shoes
wait to whisk me far away--
I'll be back home soon.

Author Notes Inspired by the beautiful new running shoes my husband bought me for my birthday and the frequent need to escape these four walls and the chaos within!

Running is my refuge. It's my peace and quiet, my sanctuary and sanity restorer!

Chapter 17
Am I Right?

By Debra White

Saturdays,
they come and go.
Sundays too
fly past. How so?
Working week
seems so damn long...
Am I right or am I wrong?!

Author Notes The Whitney is a seven line poem with syllable count of 3/4/3/4/3/4/7 respectively.

Inspired by the whirlwind that was the weekend....where did it go?!
I can, hand on heart, state that the working week will crawl by at snail's pace!

Chapter 18
Caught Short

By Debra White

Yolanda sat upon my knee
at carpet time, for shared story.
Alas for me, engrossed was she--
neglected that she had to pee.

Author Notes Inspired by an unfortunate incident at school today..... Fortunately it happened ten minutes before home time!

Chapter 19
Trouble

By Debra White

I can't keep out of trouble,
we travel hand in hand.
Where trouble goes, I follow --
its bid is my command.

So, why do I let trouble
instruct me what to do?
I honestly don't know but I
can't help it, and that's true.

Author Notes Inspired by children everywhere (but mostly by the ones I come into contact with on a daily basis!)
Inspiration also taken from my own behaviour of late...sigh!

Chapter 20
There's Been an Accident

By Debra White

creativity
crashed headlong into brick wall --
muse battered and bruised

Author Notes Inspired by the brick wall that met my train of thought... My muse needs a medic.

Chapter 21
Everyone Nose

By Debra White

Everyone knows that the holes in our nose
are just there for bogeys and snot.
They're not meant for fingers, or buttons, or beads,
or anything else, no they're not!

Author Notes Inspired by an incident at work today when one of the little darlings shoved a bead up her nose... unfortunately, we couldn't dislodge it! I think a trip to the emergency room was probably necessary!

Chapter 22
The Twenty Second

By Debra White

The twenty second
poem in my little book
is this one. Right here.

Author Notes It's been a long and tiring week... I'm uninspired, I'm sorry :(

Chapter 23
Sparks

By Debra White

Sparks of attraction--
a dangerous distraction.
Highly hazardous.

Author Notes Inspired by hindsight...
Artwork courtesy of Angelheart at FanArtReview.

Chapter 24
Little Witch

By Debra White

What's happened to Rebecca? She's turned into a witch!
She flipped without a warning, like someone flicked a switch.

She used to be a sweet girl, the apple of my eye,
today she pushed my buttons and almost made me cry.

I hope tomorrow morning brings my Becca back to me --
without the touch of witchiness and minus misery.

Author Notes Inspired by my 5yr old daughter's bad behaviour today.... please let tomorrow be different!

Chapter 25
A Poem Behind

By Debra White

A poem behind, a poem behind,
I need to catch up but there's nowt in my mind.
I'm scraping the barrell, it pains me to say
this sad, sorry effort's all I'll write today.

Author Notes Inspired by the need to catch up with my NaPoWriMo challenge because of my inability to produce a poem for yesterday. I really don't want to fail with only 4 days left to go...

Nowt - Nothing (Yorkshire English!)
Effort - Thing (Yorkshire English!)

Chapter 26
Kiss

By Debra White

Forgotten feelings
revived in a mere moment --
passion ignited.

Author Notes Inspired by a kiss.

Chapter 27
Eggshells

By Debra White

The sounds of silence
echo eggshells underfoot--
defines 'deafening'.

Author Notes Inspired by an atmosphere experienced earlier...

Chapter 28
Niggled

By Debra White

Sleeping dog wakens,
strips meat from remembered bone...
savours the flavour.

Author Notes Inspired by the phrase 'let sleeping dogs lie' which I heard in passing today. Also inspired by someone who felt the need to rake over the past...again.

Niggled: Worried or annoyed slightly.

Chapter 29
Untitled

By Debra White

tongue tip dips reverently
in pooled, musky nectar --
idle, linger, luxuriate.
tender petals part
in supplication --
reveal, invite, satiate.

Author Notes Just inspired......x

Chapter 30
Acknowledgement

By Debra White

Appreciating each of you
who took the time out to review
the pages of my little book.

then penned your thoughts for me to find.
Your thoughts provided motivation,
spurred me on with each creation.
Thanks to each and everyone....
You're free to leave now April's gone!

Author Notes Inspired by my genuine appreciation of each and every one of you who has read and reviewed my poetry this month.
