"Lady Lily"

Chapter 1
Lady Lily and the Wizard

By w.j.debi

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 1: Chaos

Lady Lily loved her legends,
Butterfly and Dragon King.
They were, both of them, enchanted
on a day in early Spring
by a grim and wicked wizard
called the Fearsome Joe D'pring.

People feared this wicked wizard
like they'd feared no one before.
Fearsome Joe, he sought for power,
sought to rule the Kingdom Lore.
So he soared into the palace,
whirling madly through the door.

Like a dark and wild tornado,
he appeared before the throne.
"I am here to claim this kingdom;
I will rule it as my own."
Then he threw a magic potion
turning guardsmen into stone.

Next, the King became a dragon
and the Queen a butterfly.
Shrieks of terror filled the throne room;
magic sparks began to fly.
Chaos spread throughout the palace.
Fearsome Joe was feeling spry.

While the wizard chased and conjured,
leaving King and Queen alone,
Lady Lily came to help them
using magic of her own--
casting spells of transportation,
taking them to realms unknown.

Joe went mad. "They can't be missing.
Search the kingdom high and low.
Search the meadows and the forests.
Hurry up now; don't be slow.
There's a bounty for their capture.
When you find them, I must know!"

Fearsome Joe appeared so frantic.
"Find them now!" he'd stomp and yell.
Did he fear our Lady Lily?
Might she break his fearsome spell?
There were surely those who thought so,
but for now no one would tell.

Author Notes Thank you to Dean Kuch for the inspiring picture which he attached to a review of another poem I wrote, and also for his help in getting it uploaded to this one. Right now the picture is temporarily unavailable, but hope to have it back soon.

Thank you also to Angelheart for her lovely artwork, "Steer Me To Fantasyland," to compliment the story.

I meant this for the Trochaic Tetrameter contest that Just2Write created, but the story took on a life of its own and is way past the line limit.

Trochee meter is the opposite of iambic so the stress is on the first syllable. I also used the option of Catalexis lines which drops the final unstressed syllable at the end of the line. In this case that allows the 8-7-8-7-8-7 syllable count.

Chapter 2
Lady Lily and the Wizard 2

Previously--The wicked wizard, Fearsome Joe D'pring, took over the palace of Kingdom Lore. He turned the guards to stone, changed the king into a dragon and the queen into a butterfly. Lady Lily stepped in to save the king and queen by transporting them to an unknown realm.

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 2: The Crystal Stone

Grim and grumpy, glum and gloomy
was the Fearsome Joe D'pring,
though his subjects bowed before him,
though the people called him king,
though he had a golden sceptre,
crown of jewels and everything,

Still he drummed his fingers fiercely
on the throne of Kingdom Lore.
Nothing pleased this wicked wizard.
Fearsome Joe, he wanted more.
"I must find the Lady Lily,
but just how I am not sure."

While the wizard sat there brooding,
Luke approached the marble throne.
"Pardon me, your Royal Highness,
I have here a crystal stone
which displays all places clearly,
even those from realms unknown.

"You can find both things and people
if you'd care to gaze within.
May I demonstrate it for you?
It is easy to begin."
"Please come closer," Joe commanded,
with a flashing evil grin.

Fearsome Joe, he took the crystal,
held it firmly in his hand,
and the wizard was delighted
that it followed his command.
Then he saw a puzzling vision.
"I don't recognize this land."

Gazing long into the crystal,
Luke spied landmarks he knew well.
"Ah, the King and Queen are hidden
deep within the Forest Krell,
near a place I visit often,
for it's where I used to dwell."

Knowing now where he can find them,
what does Joe intend to do?
Are the King and Queen in danger?
Does our Lily have a clue?
'Twixt this Joe and Lady Lily,
will a battle now ensue?

Chapter 3
Lady Lily and the Wizard 3

Previously--The wicked wizard, Fearsome Joe D'pring, took over the palace of Kingdom Lore. He turned the guards to stone, changed the king into a dragon and the queen into a butterfly. Lady Lily stepped in to save the king and queen by transporting them to an unknown realm. Luke then gave the wicked wizard a crystal stone that allowed Joe to see where Lady Lily had transported them.

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 3: The Forest Krell

In a land of pure enchantment
news will spread as fairies fly.
Magic creatures in abundance
came to hear the reasons why
both a dragon king's in danger
and his queenly butterfly.

Soon the King and Queen were hidden
deep within the Forest Krell
with a loyal Lady Lily
working hard to break their spell,
and return them to their kingdom
where they ruled so very well.

But a grim and wicked wizard
sought to keep the spell intact.
He was on his way to find them.
Lady Lily was, in fact,
warning all the magic creatures
to prepare for his attack.

"Fearsome Joe D'pring is coming.
No one knows just when or how."
Suddenly, a dark tornado
whirled right past them with a howl.
Fearsome Joe, he stood there grinning.
"It would seem the time is now.

"I have come to slay a dragon
and to net a butterfly.
Most of all, my Lady Lily,
you will pay because you pry."
Lady Lily smiled so sweetly.
"Joe, I'd like to see you try."

Joe then gathered all his minions,
for he'd brought a teeming horde.
"Follow Luke, my chief adviser."
Luke advanced and drew his sword.
Forest creatures shook their weapons,
then the dragon huffed and roared.

Fearsome Joe began some chanting,
forming clouds to dim the sun.
Magic sparked between his fingers
till a fiery ball was flung.
Lily cast a spell to counter.
Now the battle had begun.

Chapter 4
Lady Lily and the Wizard 4

Previously--The wicked wizard, Fearsome Joe D'pring, has taken over the Kingdom Lore. He changed the King into a dragon and the Queen into a butterfly. Lady Lily transported the King and Queen to Forest Krell for safety. Joe has tracked them down by using a crystal seeing stone given to him by Luke.

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 4: The Battle

Clouds of magic growled with thunder.
Lightning set those clouds aglow.
Sparks and flames grew ever fiercer
from the hands of Fearsome Joe.
Wild winds whirled around the wizard.
Yes, he was a fearsome foe.

Lady Lily faced him boldly
as she countered every spell
in defense of all the creatures
dwelling in the Forest Krell.
Well, it made the wizard angry;
Joe began to curse and yell.

When he saw Krell's creatures tremble
Joe declared with great alarm,
"We must capture Lady Lily.
Don't you see, she'll do us harm?
She's beguiled by dragon magic,
taken in by mystic charm."

But Krell's creatures knew their Lily
so they knew the wizard lied.
And it made Joe even madder
for it hurt his wizard's pride.
So he called his chief adviser,
"Luke, I need you by my side."

Luke was dressed in shining armor.
In his hand he held a stone
which Joe took and then spoke to it,
"Here is what I would be shown:
there's a butterfly that's special.
Once she sat upon Lore's throne..."

Soon Joe grinned with glee and malice.
Yes, from here she could be seen.
So Joe threw a net toward her
--but the dragon stepped between
Joe's dark threatening net of menace
and Lore's sweet devoted queen.

Can the dragon beat the wizard?
Can he save his queen so fair?
Will the fearsome spell be broken?
Lady Lily standing there
summoned all her greatest magic.
"Fearsome Joe, you best beware!"

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 5: Storms

Roaring fire burst from the dragon.
Fearsome Joe returned the same.
Lady Lily gave a flourish,
"Now with magic I proclaim
plants and creatures of this forest
are protected from all flame."

Smoke and lightning mixed together
thus obscuring all around.
Great roars crashed against the thunder
and above the smoke and sound
Luke called out, "My loyal army,
Lady Lily must be found."

"Yes!" cried Joe, "She must be captured."
Luke advanced with sword in hand.
"I am here," she said, appearing.
"Let us do as we have planned."
Luke then winked at Lady Lily,
"My dear wife, we understand."

Luke now stood beside his Lily
and together they declared,
"Everyone surround the wizard.
Fearsome Joe is not prepared
to defend against our forces."
"What?" scoffed Joe. "You think I'm scared?"

Magic creatures stepped in closer.
Joe saw he was all alone.
Dragon jaws were snapping nearer.
Joe pulled out the crystal stone.
Seeking refuge, he spoke to it,
"Here is what I would be shown..."

When Joe found his land of promise,
he began a traveling spell.
Lady Lily watching closely,
conjured up a spell as well.
Lightning flashed and Joe commanded,
"Take me far from Forest Krell."

In a dark and wild tornado,
Joe was grinning as he spun.
Can our Lily stop him leaving,
for the battle's not yet won?
King and Queen are still enchanted.
Without Joe, what can be done?

Lady Lily and the Wizard
Part 6: Finale

Skies were overcast and dreary
and the day felt mighty warm.
Fearsome Joe was laughing madly
as he took his favorite form.
What a whirling wild tornado!
What a vicious spinning storm!

"Curse you, Lily!" cried the wizard.
"And a curse on all of Krell.
And on Lore and all its people.
Yes, on dragon kings as well.
I'll be back to seek my vengeance;
then you'll see a fearsome spell."

Lightning struck; the wild winds faded.
Fearsome Joe was seen no more.
Stunned, the creatures turned to Lily.
"What about the Kingdom Lore?"
"The enchantments can't be broken."
"Without Joe there is no cure."

"Wait, my friends," said Lady Lily.
"True, he's gone, but look around."
Magic flashed; the dragon vanished
and instead Lore's King was found.
Butterflies now fluttered forward,
parting with a rustling sound.

They revealed a smiling figure--
Lore's sweet Queen was also free.
Cheers arose of jubilation.
"Have we won the victory?"
Lily nodded. "Spells were hidden
where the wizard did not see."

"Joe was tricked by magic visions
deep within the crystal stone.
In the realm that Joe has chosen
magic power can't be shown.
Now he's trapped within its borders,
all his spells are overthrown."

Magic creatures hugged each other.
Songs rang out in Forest Krell.
Lore rejoiced at the reunion
of their King and Queen as well.
Luke embraced his Lady Lily.
"Dear, this is your grandest spell."

Epilogue

Battles fought are long forgotten.
Festivals are held each spring,
celebrating life's renewal,
where with joy the minstrels sing
stories fading into fable
of the Fearsome Joe D'pring.

Luke and Lily live together
in the forest they adore.
And the King and Queen are reigning
very well in Kingdom Lore.
Best of all, the magic creatures
dwell in harmony once more.
