Chapter 1
The Rage of Time

By Eternal Muse

The winter's raging wind turns dreams to dust.
The leaves are gone and trees stand sad and bare -
And nature's steel is showing signs of rust
as cold comes creeping, sneaking from its lair.

The spring has left, and it will be a while
before we feel its fragrant breath again.
Oh, how I'd love to see its verdant smile --
but nature's rage declares it all in vain.

Oh winds, oh thunder, to my life you're bane!
Your icy hand is clutching at my heart -
You bring disaster, famine, rage and pain
to peaceful pier from where my dreams depart.

The raging wind of time impacts my soul,
its spite is our illusions' deadly toll.

Author Notes I lost my both parents in the month of January.

Chapter 2
Reminiscence

By Eternal Muse

I think about the time so long ago
when leaves were green on my illusions' tree.
Its fantasy had cast a golden glow
on heart as vibrant as the summer sea.

Your nectar kissed my lips and was consumed
by hunger that no man could take away.
The tree of dreams was in forever bloom,
the cloudless sky showed nary hint of gray.

Thus wrapped in limbed illusions was my love;
You nourished it like warm, caressing fire ~
Alas, the ashes spewed at your alcove
were all that was bequeathed by fortune's ire.

Like trees are shed of leaves before the snow,
the sunset steals the sun's intrinsic gl
ow...

Author Notes Shakespearean sonnet is the poetic form constructed from four stanzas of three quatrains and a final couplet composed in iambic pentameter (a meter used extensively in Shakespearean plays) with the rhyme scheme abab cdcd efef gg. Usually, Shakespearean sonnets have 10 syllables per line.

Chapter 3
Red Rose

By Eternal Muse

Red rose divine with your forever thorns,
on bed of green, in timeless reverie;
Your petals are still beautiful at dawn,
But not for long, so frail your earthly spree.

Your charming eloquence beseeched my soul,
The virgin velvet spelled unbroken vow;
Your incandescent glamour took me whole
and ever graceful was your silent bow.

We found each other through your mystic charm,
A symbol of our souls' unspoken truce;
Alas, we failed to hear your soft alarm,
Your petals died, as our discarded youth.

Red rose, your wisdom will transcend the Time,
All wrapped in passion, clover, sage and rhyme.

Chapter 4
Not In This Life

By Eternal Muse

We'll never see it eye to eye, my friend,
As hard as we may try, it's not to be.
I'm weary of my acts I must defend,
A solitude I crave, away from thee...

When fire collides with fire, the end is clear -
a pile of ashes is their churning path;
And though we are to shed a bitter tear,
The greener for its moisture is the grass.

The seasons change, emotions spark and die;
A tree is lighter when the winter comes.
The summer bids the spring a firm good-bye;
The autumn follows with its rainbow drums.

Like seasons, we can never stay the same;
In moving on with time, are we to blame?

Chapter 5
Ashes of Lost Hope

By Eternal Muse

  Unrequitted-Letters

Your correspondence thundered through my head,
Gone suddenly, all that I thought was real.
Still blinded by your sun, I whirled in red,
Not knowing how to handle this ordeal.

It wasn't passion that you have revealed?
Was not I scorched by heat? Your verse was fire!
Why was the truth so cleverly concealed?
How aptly do you scribe without desire...

My knight, where did you hide your silver lyre?
The bells of love rang in my mind alone
What legacy had I through fortune's ire?
Love's ashes buried 'neath the graveyard stone.

Oh unrequited love, so wide your breadth!
And sharp the quill that pierced my very depth.

Author Notes Spenserian Sonnet is a variation of the Shakespearean Sonnet. A Spenserian Sonnet has three quatrains and a couplet but there is a twist where you employ linking rhymes between the quatrains (ABAB....BCBC....CDCD....EE), and must contain the iambic pentameter.

The topic of this contest is Unrequited Love.

The picture used is by the well known artist Michael Cheval "Unrequitted Letters."

A huge thanks to Karenina for her help writing this poem.

Chapter 6
Emerald Abyss

By Eternal Muse

Where dreams run free in emerald abyss
and opal valleys gratify the eye,
Is where I found my everlasting bliss
beneath a canopy of cloudless sky.

A thirsty pilgrim in the desert sun,
I looked for an oasis down below;
Lifegiving dew I craved, but there was none,
I longed for winter, but there was no snow.

I wandered endlessly in search of light,
A seaman lost at sea, I sought my pier;
My friends - black raven and a starless night,
to them alone did I confide my fear.

A sacred light caressed my tired eyes
as misty valleys shed their long disguise.

Chapter 7
Enchantress

By Eternal Muse

moon

I looked outside, and there you were, my Moon ~
Your silver magic took my breath away.
So beautiful, in evening sky's lagoon,
A star by night, you greet the dawning day.

Your luminescence glides upon a lake,
You bless the lovers, guide the ships at sea -
Romantic fancies flourish in your wake,
Sweet ebb and flow of passion's lunacy.

What would I do without your sacred light?
My heart aglow, I bask in your romance ~
I'm born anew from your fluorescent sight
The Moon and I - we linger in our dance.

My golden orb, I love your lunar smile;
Immortal is your incandescent style.

Chapter 8
Forgotten Rose

By Eternal Muse

blue-rose7

I loved you then and yes, I love you now--
     The mills of time cannot erase your smile.
     My sacred passion's solemnly avowed -
     you told me you'd be only gone a while...

     The mills of time cannot erase your smile,
     your happy laugh that turned to silver bells -
    You told me you'd be only gone a while,
    I dropped a coin into your wishing well.

    Your happy laugh that turned to silver bells,
    My heart was full of trust, how could it not?
    I dropped a coin into your wishing well,
    It drowned like promises that you forgot.

     I loved you then and yes, I love you now,
     my sacred passion's solemnly avowed.

Author Notes Pantoum Sonnet is a combination of two timeless poetic forms - a Pantoum and a Sonnet.

Chapter 9
The Shell

By Eternal Muse

When I behold that sea-caressed pink shell,
a thousand pictures travel through my mind:
How you and I defied the witches' spell
embracing love we thought we'd never find.

We walked on a deserted sandy beach,
reciting poetry to grateful dunes;
The crescent moon seemed well within our reach,
the sky sent rainbows with their opal tunes.

'Twas then I saw you picking up a shell:
Your face aglow, you handed me the gift -
A pink sensation from the sea's blue well ~
How many centuries was it adrift?

Your treasure from the deep, forever mine.
A gift from aphros, perks of the divine.

Author Notes Aphros - Greek for foam. According to the Greek legend, goddess Aphrodite was born of foam.

Chapter 10
My Doom

By Eternal Muse

To love you secretly is now my doom --
Our crystal vase is crushed beyond repair.
But though our rhododendron died in bloom,
Its roots are congregated 'neath the air.

Your words, your mood, your will are my command,
How I adore you, you may never know.
Your verse, your genius are Nirvana blend,
My secret tears leave dots in winter snow...

If I offended you, please name the price,
I'll pay it all in full till satisfied;
My deep remorse will melt the heart of ice,
But it's your heart, of all, that may be tired...

You are the key to my eternal Muse,
The amulet I hope I'll never lose.

Chapter 11
The Wave

By Eternal Muse

Elusive like Pacific tides, you are,
A fleeting wave I like to chase in vain;
And when I think you close, you're oceans far,
My love, my dream, my fantasy and pain.

I dwell in your mystique, Ulysses' lair,
I pick your shells on coral laden shore,
Reliving our ill-fated love affair
and remnant feelings that I can't ignore.

Poseidon, splash me with your azure wave,
Like Aphrodite, cover me with foam ~
Your mermaid will remain your faithful slave,
the bottom of the sea once more my home.

Your sea-green spume appeal entices dream
of faithful heart aglow in lovers' beam.

Author Notes Aphrodite - the Greek goddess of love, fertility and beauty. According to the legend, she was born of foam (aphros).

Ulysses is the hero of the Odyssey, written by the Greek poet Homer in the 8th century BC. He is a figure from Greek mythology, which tells stories about war between humans and the gods.

Poseidon - according to Greek mythology, the god of the sea.
