Chapter 1
Sweet Sonnet Song

By Dawn of Tomorrow

O, sonnet song, you’re sweet poetic wine,
I thirst for you, no other verse compares.
Romantic beauty weaves, like slender vine,
around and upward on angelic stairs
that rise into the heavenly abode
where harps enthrall all lovers who ascend.
O, rapture me on this celestial road.
Beloved notes please help me to transcend
where bards from yesteryear sing in my ear
their tales of love, love lost, their tales of death;
where even in their sorrow I can hear
the music flowing from their final breath.

O, sonnet, may I drink from your wellspring
to walk the realm where ancient bards still sing?

Chapter 2
A Silent Dawning

By Dawn of Tomorrow

'Tis hidden in the early morning hours,
beneath the peace and calm of dawn's first light,
the mystery that colors every flower,
a warming glow which breaks from deepest night.

You'll hear it in the whisp'ring willow tree,
inhale it through the fresh, sweet fallen dew.
This ambiance will set a spirit free;
it calls for us to start this walk anew.

So let this comfort wrap itself around
and take you on a journey you've not known.
To feel this omnipresence close, surround,
will guide you where all longing souls atone.

When silence fills the early morning hours
absorb the peace and let His light empower.

Chapter 3
Eternity Beckoned

By Dawn of Tomorrow

Thy mem'ry drifts in star-lit raven skies.
O Michael, let thy whispers ride the wind,
deliver comfort to my blurry eyes.
I'll meet thee, friend, when life He doth rescind

and find thee in a hope-lined realm of love,
embraced by peace once searched for but not found,
yet overflows in paradise above.
Until then, bathe me, let thy words surround

and swirl in pools of mourning lover's tears
that formed while crying to the midnight moon
for she who haunted all thy living years;
a phantom lover in a scriber's tune.

O bard, I'll miss thy sweet poetic wine
yet know true love was found in one Divine.

Author Notes Michael had a passion for the old world tone and he was quite a romantic at heart. I tried to capture him a bit here with his longing for love and the old world tone thrown in. I miss him every day and pray he has found that peace and love he so craved.

A traditional sonnet is a very structured poem with a specific number of lines (14), a specific poetic form of quatrains (three), followed by a couplet (two lines) and a specific rhyming scheme (abab, cdcd, efef, gg). The poem is written in either iambic tetrameter (four feet of da-DUM, da-DUM, da-DUM da-DUM) or five feet of the same beat (DUM is the stressed syllable). It is not a form to be taken lightly but is a delight to write (and read) if one is willing to commit to the structural form. Generally, sonnets are written about love, life or philosophy.

Chapter 4
No Nobler Gift

By Dawn of Tomorrow

What impassioned words could e'er reveal
the admiration found within mine eyes?
Thy caustic nature mask could ne'er conceal
a tenderhearted man, 'tis just a guise.

I walked inside thine halls of empathy
and know the gentleness thou can instill.
A cherished confidant I found in thee
and through this treacherous life we walk until

the Lord of all decides our journey's o'er.
But even then, with thee, my love resides
for friendships such as ours live evermore
and in our souls devotion will abide.

Behind thy mask there dwells true chivalry.
How blessed I am, thou shared this gift freely.

Chapter 5
The Mending

By Dawn of Tomorrow

I longed to find another's touch which held
the power to restore a tattered hope,
to reach emotions long ago dispelled
when hatred's hands secured a knotted rope.

Within my dreams I saw a brilliant flame
that wrapped itself around me in the cold.
Oh why cannot existence be the same?
Perhaps it is. It's starting to unfold.

An ally in this life and far beyond
has made his way onto the battlefield.
My injured heart is starting to respond
and with his breath of love my spirit's healed.

A miscued vow can leave a life in shreds,
but true love found will bring the mending threads.

Chapter 6
Nevermore

By Dawn of Tomorrow

Fatigued, she's trapped within his fear-built walls.
A bleeding gloom has forced her mind to dwell
with evil’s stench straight from the pit of hell.
She begs his favor, on her knees she crawls,
but laughter echoes through frenetic halls.
No mercy’s found, just eyes that ever quell
the drive to freedom from her captor’s cell.
Release me please, upon her heart she scrawls.

Be swift now Lord, I know ‘tis in Your hands
and that Your light from heaven will soon shine,
for Lord my body weakens with each dawn.
“Away thee death!” An angel’s voice commands.
“Rise bravely, child, my power now is thine.”
With might-filled sword her breakout door is drawn.

Author Notes An Italian sonnet is composed of an octave or 8 line stanza, rhyming abbaabba (poses a question or dilemma), and a sestet (6 lines) with a resolution and rhyming cdecde (here) or cdcdcd, or in some variant pattern, but with no closing couplet.

Chapter 7
Suppressive Need

By Dawn of Tomorrow

Author Note:See Author's notes below

'Tis love of spirit for a kindled flame
that keeps this ember ever glowing bright,
in hopes he’ll once again affirm my name
as she who'd held his heart that winter night.

But shadows enter, vanquish rays of light;
I hear my mourning soul reveal distress,
apprised by fact, he's drifted clear from sight.
No longer will I feel the pure caress

from one whose likened essence did possess
the tenderness to trap a yearning need
and set my life ablaze with hopefulness.
Now in the end my sanguine dream must bleed.

I can’t forgo devotion locked inside,
although he’s fled, forever he’ll abide.

Author Notes Spenserian Sonnet is a variation of the Shakespearean Sonnet. A Spenserian Sonnet has three quatrains and a couplet but there is a twist where you employ linking rhymes between the quatrains (ABAB....BCBC....CDCD....EE), and must be written in iambic pentameter.

The topic of this contest is Unrequited Love.

Chapter 8
My Prayer to Thee

By Dawn of Tomorrow

O, hand of God, thy divine presence missed
in rainbows bright and waves that brush ashore.
O, Holy One, a nation gone adrift,
I pray we sense the heart of thee once more.
To see thy face upon the mountain strong
and hear thy whisper in the morning breeze.
To bring us back to thee where we belong
before thy wrath shall bring us to our knees.
O, Father, let us feel thy loving touch
in every walk of life upon this land,
before thine enemy holds in his clutch
thy people who are fooled by his command.

In crying voice I send this prayer to thee,
to lift the veil and help thy people see.

Chapter 9
This Christmas Morn

By Dawn of Tomorrow

It's early Christmas morn , the children sleep.
A peace reigns o'er the dawning of this day.
This calm He wants us all to feel, to keep.
Throughout the year He wants this peace to stay.

But chaos and despair control the scene,
so many without hope across this earth.
The enemy who stalks our world unseen
destroys the meaning of the Christ child's birth.

Let's join our hearts together, one by one,
uplift our voices now unto the Lord.
Let's pray the evil spread can be undone
so hope and harmony can be restored.

Serenity is found on Christmas morn;
let's praise this day that Jesus Christ was born.

Author Notes I wish all of you a very blessed Christmas day.
