A short tribute to some Civil Rights Pioneers

They Still Rose

by nomi338

The author has placed a warning on this post for language.

Forced to ride at the back of the bus,

Obeyed the rules without making a fuss,

One day she decided, she’d had enough,

For this, she was taken away in cuffs.

This unfair treatment caused some sparks,

We now celebrate Mrs. Rosa Parks.

Raised as a poor child in the South,

A traumatic incident silenced her mouth,

Learning to master the art of poetry,

Her work is honored all over this country,

To some, she may appear to be brand new,

Get to know the timeless soul of Maya Angelou.

No longer willing to accept or abide,

Abuse from which  his people died,

Nelson rebelled and was jailed,

Efforts to break him completely failed,

Once elected president, his success was evident,

Lead with love, rejected hate he they could not intimidate.

While yet a young man, he changed our lives,

Knew that God knows when a righteous man dies,

He taught us that only love erases hate,

Urged us to forgive before it’s too late,

Encouraged America to let freedom ring,

We'll always remember Dr. Martin Luther King.

Nina’s talent was obvious,

a gift she gladly shared with us,

Her ability did not suffer any lack,

Nina Simone; young, gifted, and black.

Feeling her life here was not up to par,

she chose to love America from afar.

We'll always honor the paths they chose,

Despite opposition, they still rose.

Although these are not the only civil rights pioneers, they are among my favorites. The photos are a collage I was able to put together from images taken from the internet.
