The Lovers

by gansach

Romeo loved Juliet,
Juliet the Capulet;
Juliet loved deep and so
sent love back to Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet
knew love's wrong in fam'lies set
to cut t'other to the quick.
'Tis enough to make them sick.

Romeo and Juliet
wed each other in secret,
but loyalty still held reign:
Mercutio, Tybalt slain.

Romeo left Juliet,
banish'd by the Prince and yet
plotted swiftly to return;
for Juliet, he did burn.

Plotted, too, did Juliet
when a wedding day was set;
faking death, she would escape
and, for Romeo, she'd wait.

Ah! Romeo, Juliet,
star-cros't lovers ever yet!
Messages arrive too late,
sealing this pair's deadly fate.

Romeo finds Juliet
entombed in a sleeping death.
While, from his eyes, tears do rain,
drinks poison to kill his pain.

Slowly wakes sweet Juliet,
finds her love beside her~yet
just too late to save his life,
stabs herself with her love's knife.

Romeo loved Juliet,
joined together now in death.
Too late, Wisdom from above~
Don't make Hate! Just make Love!

No Restrictions Poetry writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem of any type to enter this poetry contest. Any subject.

With my childhood copy of Shakespeare's Complete Works battered, annotated, and underlined, I gifted myself a keepsake copy from The Globe in London and embarked on the quest to read it cover to cover. I usually read myself to sleep and, having reached Romeo and Juliet, was dozing off when the first two lines of this poem popped into my head. Unable to rest until I completed it, this is the result. Then where to put it? What to do with it? Thank you Unrestricted Poetry Contest--it now has a home.
