Jerry Vilhotti: Posted: Thursday: By Robby Piazzaroli THOMASTON ? Local author and creative mind Jerry Vilhotti recently donated a copy of his latest full book, God?s Depicting Pastime, a collection of poems. Having first published three stories in The Literary Review during his college years at The City College of New York, this is Mr. Vilhotti?s first full published work. ?As my beautiful wife said to me, ?since you loved sports and played baseball at Wilby High, why don?t you write something on baseball,?? said Mr. Vilhotti. ?I did, wondering how the Greek gods would view the game.? For this new book, he read up on the Greek Gods to make sure he put them into their proper roles, while mixing his knowledge of ?the game.? He took his experience from childhood, playing neighborhood baseball when he was in his early teens in the East Bronx. In Gods Depicting Pastime, Mr. Vilhotti conjures up the feelings of a ballgame, with beer, hot dogs and roasted peanuts, set in front of a backdrop of some of the most well-known figures in Greek history. His wife, Dorothy Vilhotti, recently died in May of this year, leaving Mr. Vilhotti wanting to honor her memory somehow. He decided that since they lived in Thomaston and his late wife would donate to the library every January, that he would donate a copy of his new book to the Thomaston Public Library. His wife, he said, would visit the local library every two weeks to borrow her latest reads. He thought that he would donate one of his copies in honor of his wife?s appreciation for reading. He said that he may possibly look into donating copies of his book to other local libraries, but for now, it is only available at the TPL and Amazon. While his ideas and topics vary, Mr. Vilhotti typically writes storellas, tone poems, literary pastiche and longer short stories. He gathers his material from life experiences and ?those loved ones around? him, he said. He describes his home in Thomaston as a simpler place. There, with his wife, Dorothy, the two raised their three children. Other than writing, Mr. Vilhotti?s favorite pastimes are playing golf and watching his beloved grandchildren grow. He has written his whole life, published and unpublished, owing much of his creativity to his childhood. He said that even as a child, people were often warned to ?be careful what they said around the kid - he?s a writer.? ?Since I was the last born, coming in on a crash landing among four siblings who were married or went off to life, I was the only child at home,? he said. ?I created games, which I enjoyed much... I hope my readers get something from my work that will help them think their way through life and feel compassion, the mother of love and see all as one family of human beings.? Mr. Vilhotti has been published by The Literary Review, The Antigonish Review, Dream International, Puck & Pluck, Hob Nob and other literary magazines. His short stories can be found on a plethora of websites, including Bewildering Stories, Smokebox, Internet Speculative Fiction Database, www.storyhouse.org, www.nicestories.com, and more .... |
