Harrypet: 10 000 Hour Journey to BeingA Genius in Your Field The book â??Outliers,â?? written by Malcolm Gladwell, a journalist who writes for The New Yorker, is an eye-opener to the secrets of geniuses. The title â??Outliersâ?? was used to refer to the extraordinary few people in terms of material wealth, knowledge, skill and influence. Throughout the book, Gladwell repeatedly mention the 10 000 Hour Rule claiming that the key to success in any field is to a large extent, is a matter of practising a specific task for a total of 10 000 hours. He cited the examples of world class successes like Bill Gates and The Beatles. Through an interview with Bill Gates, he attributed Bill Gatesâ?? success to the fact that he was exposed to Programming at the age of 13! He argued that through constant practice of about 10 000 hours; he was able to create the Microsoft. Looking at this issue from a lay manâ??s viewpoint, one can easily agree that constant practice actually makes perfection. The question now is, if it takes 10 000 hours of thorough practice to make one a genius in his field, how many years will it take a man to reach this goal? This means that it will take a person who does four hours of thorough daily practice 2 500 days (approximately 7 years) for him to attain mastery in his field. All being said, we can all see that the 10 000hours investment is worth the heck as those who have taken the pains are having good stories to tell. Considering the amount of time required to attain mastery, an average man will literally count it as a futile endeavour. It takes a determined and disciplined personality to rise to this challenge. The truth howeveris that â??little dropsof water make a mighty ocean.â?? You can start with as little as an hour daily practice in your field. Increase it by and by and start taking a countdown on your way to mastery. The mostexciting fact is that it is not until you reach the 10 000 hour target that you begin to see tangible changes in your life and personality. The positive changes you will experiencewill begin from the very first day you take a step by practicing thoroughly for a specific amount of time. Another point to note is that you should not look up at the 10 000 hours of practice ina negative manner. You should rather focus on the amount of time you will dedicate daily to pursue this cause. This willhelp you make a countdown and give you an idea ofhow much you have done and how much you can still do if you continue. â??By the yard it is hard but by the inch everything is cinch.â?? Some people have begun their journey to mastery since the publishing of this book (Outliers) on November 18, 2008. What are you waiting for? You can start your race today. It is entirely up to you to pursue a cause that to a reasonable extentgives you a purpose for living. |
