EllenMcCarthy: I'n new here and wondering what writers here want to see in the reviews...I would like candor because I want to improve. |

There is a tremendous amount of fine poetry here and indeed, there is much to learn, especially about writing. I came on board with that rigid sense of rhyme and meter that was instilled by high school teachers. I went to a convention and the college professors in their own way aptly demonstrated the sheer vastness and flexibility in poetic writing. This site not only bumped that perception up a notch, it frustratingly challenged me. The easyiest way to learn about reviewing here, it to see what other people have to say about particular pieces of what you plan to review, it will also open your eyes about the possiblities in poetry too. It was funny that my favorite member and poetry related love of my life was one that I at first was intimidated and refused to review. She showed the fun of the double entendre and incorperating multiple meanings and reading possibilities in one poem. Also find the poetry that you like and sign on to be the poets fan, and incorperate what you like into your own style. -
What other writers are looking for when they post their stuff varies, depending on the individual, as I'm sure you're finding out. Some of us are looking for honest critiques of our prose and poetry from other fledgling writers, with a goal of becoming better at our craft. Within that group you'll find those who don't give a damn about the ratings (aka stars), and those who do. Count me among the former. Then there are those who are here to collect as many stars as they can, and don't give a damn about what you have to say about their writing. And finally, there are those writers who want lots of stars AND the accolades to go with them, and will let you know how unfair and arbitrary you are for cheating them out of their entitlement! ;-D The thing is, when you pay your FanStory dues, you're entitled to use the site in whatever way you wish--within the site's rules, of course. Over time, you'll discover which writers fit into which category, and you might become more selective about who you read and review as a result. Or not. Hey, some people like to be yelled at and berated for not sugar-coating their comments. LOL! If you're looking for like-minded writers (the ones seeking candor and improvement in their writing), try visiting the FanStory Forum pages and check out the "Reviewing" category. You'll find lots of spirited discussions on this very subject by some of the best reviewers (IMHO) on the site. Enjoy! -
