Awesome, just stunning. I have an undergraduate degree in philosophy in college and can attest to the fact it's all just mental gyrations leading nowhere.
Like someone wanting to be a good golfer and ONLY studying books on the subject without ever stepping out to actually play on the course. lol
Perfect meter, rhyme and volta. So sorry you didn't win. Who judges these contests anyway? lol
Great work!!

How very kind of you to review this one, Octavia, and to award it six stars. Much appreciated. Although I've not studied philosophy in any great depth I rather agree with your comments. Mental gyrations don't do very much to cure one's slice! You pose an interesting question at the end. I have often wondered who the judges might be!

As always Tony, your words can brighten a dull scene and bring it to life with fresh insight and a new perspective.
I loved the first photo, which no doubt offered a topic on which to write, but your delightful photo of the two ducks beak to beak and forming a heart-shape between them, offered a beautiful opportunity for a perfect close.
Nuthin' to say about meter, except that It's iamb perfect.

Tony, a pair of carved wooden ducks is a traditional Korean wedding present. Your English Sonnet extols the virtue of heart over mind. A balance is probably ideal, but pure intellect is a very lonely existence. Your words are wise as well as well presented. Great poem. :) Nancy

I really liked/enjoyed this sonnet. So often, sonnet seems a synonym for "stuffy." That is not the case here where the words seem to dance from one line to the next and the message is clear and easy to agree to and understand.

This tells us that it is better to be face to face that back to back. Love can only grow when you can get to know each other. Only life can truly teach us about love.

Good luck in the contest.

Keep writing

Joan

Hi there!
What a wonderful poem! The battle between the brain and the heart is eternal. More often than not, the heart wins. I strongly wish that heart continues to win forever. Your poem seems to convey the same hope. Congratulations on a great poem.

What would hold the books while they are out to play or did the books get passed on to another generation?

I read about sonnets and you have the syllable count correct as well as the rhyme.

Congratulations on your awards.

What a pleasure to read this wonderful poem, Tony! Your photographs are perfect and your use of the bookends to create your moving "duck-tale" is creative and entertain8ng. Your message is memorable. Books and school give us a foundation for life, but it's the experiences of life's adventures which truly are our change to grow with knowledge. Eat wishes in the sonnet contest!
Smiles,
Karyn :-)
