I can smell the bread, and feel the chill of new fallen snow, and even taste the popcorn and a hot-diggity dog slathered in mustard at the Rose Bowl. Thanks for sharing and good luck! :-)

Nancy, I enjoyed reading this free verse poem. It allowed me to breathe in the fresh cold air on your winter wonderland walk, enjoy the warmth of your flickering furnace and the smell of some hearty home cooking. It also gave me hope knowing that when the time comes for me to sit in my empty nest it will not be as daunting as the thought of it. There is the hope of living a different and new way of life that will be just as fulfilling. Thank you for sharing. ~DD

This is a beautiful entry, my friend. The imagery is stunning and takes the reader right into the warmth of your home with you. You brought a smile of pure love to my faith when you mentioned Brooke as I often think of her skill at meter myself. All the best in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

Now this one I really like. I felt the flow of this one. Something about this one felt so much better than your last free verse. Again, I am far from being any kind of poetry guru, so don't take me too seriously. I do feel this is much better written. Good luck in the contest.

Very good poem. I can't go out if it's below about 10 -- I'm making it ten because I have a lot to do today and can't stay until it's above 20 or I won't get it all done.

Happy New Year -- good luck with the resolutions. Mine is 'no sugar in coffee' and 'don't give up walking or exercising.'

Stay warm!

Your words took me to your living room and I saw the outlook from your window, the snow, the cardinal, your green tea on your check diner, you painted a picture for me and I could feel the peace in your house. The love for your dogs and your care for them, your poem paints a cold picture outside, but there is warmth in your heart and in your house, you invited me in and I would like to share some of your green tea please, a lovely write, love Dolly x

A very well-written Free verse poem. In the colder winter months, we have more time to observe what is going on around us and our hopes for new growth during the expected Spring Season.

Nancy, what I enjoyed about your poem is that you took the details and observations of your daily life and put it in free verse. The reader experiences things through even, even a slight chill. We all know the recent events of people dipping in freezing water on New Year's Day:

The television news (show) shivering swimmers
who jumped into ice cold, Minnesota lakes
for fundraisers and fun fellowship.

(Use singular for "show" to agree with the noun "news.")

It is cool but not freezing here in California, but you never know that from my shivering Chihuahua, so these lines appealed to be because I am a dog lover and an adewpearl lover. This is a fun tribute to her that would charm her:

My dogs walk quickly, "cold Momma," as they lift
Their cold legs on white winter snow. My feet go
Da Dum Da Dum like iambic beats of adewpearl's poems.

I love your sense of expectancy for spring:

I shared the shoveling chores with my spouse.
Somewhere under the snow my tulips and lilies sleep.

Ha! I laugh at the New Year's resolutions many of us make, but I wish you success in yours. I got to keep walking 10,000 steps a day:

I journal my reasons, resolutions and revelations
of my fitness goals to boast

Finally, you cap off your poem by summarizing your poetic life.

Such is a life of an empty nester,
playing with poetry, and celebrating life.

This is a fine free verse poem which made me smile and nod in acknowledgement in many areas.

Thank you for sharing. i wish you success in the contest with your wonderful, free verse entry.
