You do a sensory poem for a Petrachan sonnet with a very different focus. I think you capture a dog's experience and a narrator's observance very well. The nose picture is fun. Good change in perspective throughout, adds interest.

Thank you, sfharper, for your review and for noting the sensory quality of my Petrarchan sonnet. Following my dog's lead, I paid attention to our surroundings to craft this poem--the eucalyptus trees, the smell or chimney smoke, Mina's reactions. This all created an interesting poem. Thanks.

Oh, thank you, Pam, for your generous, six star review and for wishing me luck in the contest. Yes, it is counter intuitive to face pumas, yell at them, and boost your height by waving your arms, because our instinct tells us to run. But pumas are designed to chase down prey like deer, so you must never run. Back away, perhaps, but not run. I took my safety instructions directing from the Santa Cruz University puma tracking program. Thanks again.

A fine Petrarchan sonnet with a slightly different rhyme scheme,
hence a fine rhymed poem for the contest.
Very good descriptive imagery

Yes, RS, never doubt a dog's nose or sixth sense. I was riding in a car in Las Vegas today with Mina in my lap when all of the sudden she got spooked, leaped from my lap, and went to the other side of the car to stare out of the window. I have never seen her do that before. Was there a dog outside? No. She was staring out the window at the outdoor arena where the mass killer shot all of those people. Of all of the times to choose to get spooked and stare out the window she chose that moment as I passed the massacre site. I wondered, "Mina, what are you seeing? What are you thinking?" I do not know but I do not think it was a coincidence. I have a spooky dog and should listen to her.

Yes you have some terrifying beasts there in North America, Remember being warned about black bears while touring Shanendoah national park, and actually spotting them. I read a sad story today about a dog owner in San Francisco who let her dog run off leash at Stern Grove when it was attacked by a coyote right in the city. Yes, we must all be careful. Thanks.

Whenever danger is afoot and the pets are in an uproar it is wise to pay attention. Animals have well developed senses that often save their lives, watching them can be very worthwhile. Please stay safe.

Wild boars?! Well, I have coyotes as well as mountain lions prowling about so I either have to walk closer to home and away from the eucalyptus groves or carry a whistle and a heavy flashlight with me.

I must admit to laughing when you "followed her back inside." So, she's the same breed as one of Mum's rat-dogs and they are afraid of something lol.
Beautiful work on this rather scary incident and a great picture as well.
