I really loved your story. It was interesting with the words flowing for a fast enjoyable read. I'm hanging on the hope that because I take after my father's side I won't get Alzheimer's. My Mom has had it for ten years and both her parents died from it. Whenever I have a memory problem my mind goes there. Great entry for this 300 word contest!

Thank you. I think just being aware of the disease is a step in the right direction for all of us. We're fortunate that others can recognize changes in our behavior and take measures to help. We all have memory issues at some point, so unless it happens regularly, don't be too worried.

It's always sad to see our parents' minds diminish. I wonder why he would call the doorman to tell him his plans for the night. Otherwise, well done. Best of luck in the contest.

My attempt with the doorman was to confirm dad had a problem requiring me to stay. Due to the word constraints, I wasm't able to develop it further. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi there,

A curious little piece here. good job getting this into the 300 word limit. It is quite affecting and shows how quickly things can head south.

All the best

A very touching, sad story, but it makes you wonder, is there anything wrong with him? My Father had Alzheimer's. When I visited him he would ask his departed wife to bring coffee. He said, "I don't know where she is. I was talking to her a minute ago." He was living in his own world, but his wife was with him.

Thanks Tom. You're right. To them, life is normal - it's sad.

Good job in writing the 300 word story. You did manage a complete story with a few words.
The storyline is clear and the story complete.
Good job.

What a surprise ending! The artwork was either interpreted, or the finding of it was very clever. But good plot, it fits in with the tragic stories of older people becoming demented these days. Well done, good characters, great plot and a good entry in this contest, good luck, blessings, Roy

It must be so hard for children to watch a parent go downhill and not be able to do a damned thing about it. What could the son do by staying over? Talk to his dad reminding him of times past, would his dad remember he'd even been there? Regards Mabaker

It's a horrible disease. Thank's for reading, and for your comments.

This didn't seem particularly heartfelt, more like you wrote it just to suit the photograph rather than having had to endure the terrible pain of a parent who actually is suffering from dementia.

I'm sorry it doesn't read the way you would like it to.

It's a hard concept to contain in 300 words.

Unfortunately, I am all too well familiar with dementia. My mother-in-law, who lived with us for twenty years, declined rapidly with the disease, not even knowing her grandchildren, and trying to escape from the house to wander aimlessly. The photo was a good way to show what most people don't see.

    Thank you for your comments.

This is an excellent story. I think many can relate. We do not realize how far dementia has set in, until an incident like this takes place. You have a smooth flow of writing that holds the reader's interest. I wish you well in the contest.
