What a well written poem about this awful disease. I like how you followed the progress of one man for awhile. Thankful to you wonderful volunteers who take on this rather ominous task. Your "story" is well described and the rhyming is great. I'm sure you make a big difference in their lives at a very difficult time. thanks for what you do. Blessings, Carol

Cancer sufferers require such a lot of caring support throughout their ordeal and there are knights in shining armour who dedicate themselves selflessly to this task, your poem is a tribute them, love Dollyx

Cancer is a nasty illness to have. My mom just went through breast cancer and the treatments nearly killed her before she could even have the surgery but thank God she survived it. Thank you for sharing this. NB

Well written poem concerning volunteers for people who can really used them, cancer patients.

Cancer is such a hideous monster, and one it seems that affects almost everybody.

Such an important task these volunteers provide.

No structural errors noted.

Katharine,

What a horribly sad poem and what a horribly sad job you do. Kudos and big hugs to you for the strength you have and the light you bring to others. It's a big thing you do -- this small thing called volunteering. Thank you!

thanks, Robyn. They teach us a lot with their bravery and strength of will to keep coming back week after week.
My partner - some days, is this wonderful guy named Manny. He looks like a Mexican Santa Claus and he has a twinkle in his eye and huge smile and deep voice and the patients love him - especially the kids. He has had cancer twice. Talk about inspiring.

This is an emotional poem. It made me feel the pain these volunteers must go through. I hate to criticize it but I found the rhyme scheme to be a bit clunky with some forced rhymes. Maybe it doesn't even need to rhyme? I realize that would be a major rewrite so probably a unreasonable request. I'm sure there are markets for this poem out there. Good luck finding one.

well, i guess you're reading it with accents on different syllables than those intended, nor do I believe the rhymes are forced, but thank you for reading, anyway.

Great reading and so sad. Good sketch as well. I appreciate the Volunteers that help at our local Hospital I used to see every day when my wife was there so recently.
Just saying...can't and rant come out rhyming in the USA but not in Aussie sadly. But I translate no problems. No spags.

smiling. didn't think of that (can't and rant not rhyming in Australia) pretty funny, actually, but thanks for translating.

Bless you, Katharine, for volunteering and helping these patients with the battle of their lives. So sorry to hear about your husband. He's a hero to be willing to do the trials to help them continue the research to help future patients. It's a battle close to home. I can thank the Lord that I've recovered from breast cancer and my husband's lymphoma is not bad enough to treat. Life is tenuous with cancer but He does provide through wonderful people like you!

Oh dear, thank you, but it's you and your husband ( and mine) and people like you who go through the suffering and heartache who are so brave and gutsy. My hat's off to you and my heart aches for you that you had to go through all that you did. I hope it didn't sound like I was praising us. maybe I should change the title.

Oh, no you're a hero to serve that way! I feel blessed by the many who prayed and gave such cheerful greetings in that gloomy cancer center!

Gosh what a brilliant poem and I'm so sorry about your husband. Cancer took my Dad from me around 17 years ago so I am familiar with that nasty beaast.

You've given a clever insight into the constant angst, hope and ultimate heartache, many patients suffer at the hands of this very unbiased disease.

Hopefully there will be a cure in our lifetime. I heard somewhere that there is a theory that the cure will be something very simple that's been under our noses for a long time.

They are breaking new ground all the time but it is too late for many and I would think a volunteer job such as this takes much compassion and empathy and you would go home and cry a lot.
I simply wouldn't cope. I'm an emotional basket case.

My last and most special sixer for the week for this wonderful write. Very palpable. Well done Katherine.
Your meter is bang on. Thank YOU. I just LOVE rhyme.

Hugs P
x

Yeah, the cure is probably something like okra. conundrum.

This piece was well-thought out and expressed like someone who knows what she's talking about.
The poem was enlightening. Your compassion comes through.
It must be difficult to relive these moments.
