This line tells me, they're in for it. :"They were a cocky bunch, " Like that's gonna happen: "He told the teens to stay on the trail and not to race the horses." You've got the reader's attention now: "The kids rolled on the ground and flailed their arms around. None of us knew what the heck was going on." I like the regional dialectal humor: "Us low-life country folk did our best to hide our amusement." It would have been nice if they learned some respect for elders: "Maybe those youngsters learned a lesson in respect for horses and wasps." This was very entertaining.

Excellent, come upence I was just six when this incident happened. My Granmamma always taught me to never seek revenge as what goes around comes around, as it did in this lovely memory you have, I think I would have laughed too as I am now. Great parable is shown in many ways. Here in the UK we say smart Alex's and I've never heard of a wasps hive said as in this tale. See told you we learn somthing new if we looked, being new here on the site maybe you could inform me how I can follow you. Congratulations on your win well deserved. God Bless you

Since I own horses and once worked for a stable, I loved the story. It amazes me how people who aren't around horses have no idea that the animals have feelings and minds of their own. I love it when the horse outsmarts them.
Well told and enjoyable to read.

I really liked this story of the country folk getting one over the city kids. You mentioned yellow jacket nests and then in the same paragraph wasps. I assume they are the same, or are yellow jackets bees? I think it might have been better to call them one or the other. Glad you mentioned getting a doctor as bee/wasp stings can be fatal for those with allergies and it's always good to point this out for those who may be unaware. A good lesson learned here.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. You're right, I'm not sure about the bee thing either, it should be one or the other. Oh well, I do my best, but goof up sometimes.

It's still a feel good story. We need more of them.

Serves them right, no respect for the animals or wildlife glad it ended well for them tho, wouldn't want any one seriously hurt. Good luck in the contest .

All I can say is good. Horses scare me but, when I was seventeen I visited some relatives in Austrailia and went horse riding with them. I learnt the respect thing. Give them respect and they will give the same to you. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

Oh how good it feels when the arrogant get their comeuppance. You wrote your tale really well I could picture the trail and the steep hillside. Also the mad burst for home. Well done and good luck.

Silly city slickers. Now, they have to listen to you country folk.
Wasps are no fun and painful. I was stung once and ran inside
for cortisone. It was inside my clothesline. One of the wasp spotted
me in the garden and stung me between the eyes. I can understand
their pain. Ouch. Bring some cortisone along with you on the trail
rides. Hope you got photos. Great story. flylikeaneagle

Thank you for reading and commenting. A honeybee stung me below the eye once and my eye was swollen completely shout for two days. Bees are nothing to take lightly.

Well-written story with humor and the element of surprise.

I only found one concern:

we mounted them on the more spirited horses in the riding string, They also insisted they didn't want, or need, a guide to go with them. [I think this might be an oversight, since you capitalized "They," but I'll just point out that you need to have punctuation other than a comma after "string." You can't have two complete sentences separated by a comma.]

Thank you for the catch Jay. I will edit and correct. I have a bad habit of rushing things and making silly mistakes.

The owner of the stable did call a doctor to make sure no one had bee allergies or serious injuries. We laughed about the incident for days. Someone could have been hurt or killed but, as it turned out, all was fine and maybe those youngsters learned a lesson in respect for horses and wasps.' I know you say it wasn't funny at the time but its making me hoot now. So well written too. well done for making me smile tonight kindest regards Meia x
