A well-written contest entry. Your words flowed well line to line . The story flowed from the beginning to end. Your added detail and realistic characters brought the story to life as I read it.

With all due respect, Ricky 1024 (and you do this quite frequently with your poetry as well), could you please tell me how this is a "horror story", other than the fact that it is a horror to you that you lost your son, which is understandable?

Let me define the word "horror" for you as to make it more clear:

horror [hawr-er, hor-]
noun
1.an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting; a shuddering fear:
to shrink back from a mutilated corpse in horror.

2.anything that causes such a feeling:
killing, looting, and other horrors of war.

3.such a feeling as a quality or condition:
to have known the horror of slow starvation.

4.a strong aversion; abhorrence:
to have a horror of emotional outbursts.

5.Informal. something considered bad or tasteless:
That wallpaper is a horror. The party was a horror.

Your story caused me to feel none of the things mentioned above. The "horror" is relative to the reader, not the one writing the story.

It's not a bad story. It seriously needs re categorized as it's a bit misleading.
Good luck in your contest.

Yes, I'm sure that's quite horrific (the second thing mentioned, not the first. The first is science fiction). But what you're writing isn't horror.
    Not hardly.
You think you're the only one who has suffered loss?
    Think again.

A good story about a really sad life. It seems things started out bad and then got worse. I hope this was fictional, but if not, good luck with the life and the contest.
You did a wonderful job of following your character through the different stages of life.

Take care,
Rhonda
