Steve,
"do your tongue a favor" is about right. I don't think I can say enough about this poem. There is so much packed inside it... on so many levels... First off, your rapid fire internal/external rhymes are SUPER amazing, using words which some won't have a clue as to their meanings, but which become VERY apparent they are ALL just as important as the other. You leave no stone unturned as you make your way through the daily newspaper... wow!

You hit the headlines (or sections) of the news:
Letters to the editor
International
Puzzles and Comics
REligion
Lifestyle
Fashion
WEather
Arts
Science
Politics
Sports
Editorials

and then, in each section, you seek out a hammered out version of each, which leaves the reader breathless!

I must tell you my favs:

International
all barely rational
Munich and Nice
do we trust the police
Brussels is plundering
Paris and London
Kabul and Istanbul
festering tension
a sentry no entry
devising dissension
commanding a question
with no explanation
(with all the news that is news in the news, lately, how can this not be broken down into bombings, fires, trucks running amok, terrorists... people killing people... the world is losing their boundaries)

(found in puzzles and comics)
insidious monster
invidious punster
or funster imperious
you cannot be serious
(the last line made me smile)

(on another note... )
Religion by pigeon
o master commander
mister of mystery
fingering rosary
ignoring the history
father confessor
offender transgressor
he seeks absolution
no finer ablution
oh such convolution
the censor considers
extensive revision
(I think I shall genuflect in your direction for this one!)

Whither the Weather
we founder and blunder
in blustery westerly
Wednesday's a better day
warmer than Saturday
former or latter day
windier wetter day
frontal disgruntlement
better get shelter
but could be a belter
(pure genius, this... though I do think the last line would read better if you said:
'it' could be a belter, I know you like the alliteration of 'but', but if you're saying you better take shelter (it) could be a belter, makes more sense than 'but'... just a thought)

(loved this as well)
remarks on The Arts are
compelling depiction
of factual fiction
in separate session
of cinematography
not quite pornography
artsy meandering
gawking and gandering
past understanding
both take-off and landing
fostering posturing
commonplace commentary

Politics... well done, (you forgot to say you didn't inhale) lol

(and the ending)
here's Editorial
proprietorial
persuasion occasion
for high exhortation
ponderous pondering
indignant and wandering
reduction of tension
or misapprehension
a whole new dimension
emotion in passing
digression digression
procession
the end
(again, SO well done)

I absolutely loved this, which is why I had to save it for a meteor shower day... or at the very least, a day with sixes. ;) I do hope to see it in Poem of the Month booth... and hope that it's a real contender (and that one of mine isn't against it) lol I hate losing.) lol
Hugs
Cat

Hi, Cat. Thanks for the great review. I think it's longer than the poem!

Poems come to me in all sorts of ways, and this one started off as just random words and phrases - no common link except for the playfulness of the sound effects. Then it sat for a while until I could revisit it and see the newspaper theme. Then it was just a matter of re-organising everything under the section headings and tinkering with some of the parts.

I'm glad you found this works. It is largely intended as fun, although I did slip in a few sneaky little references, as you noticed.

Poem of the Month? It should make the cut if the current theory of the ratio of sixes to total reviews is the determining factor. I've only ever been nominated twice in five years, perhaps because I write mainly for contests, so it would be nice to think this was in with a shot. On the other hand, I don't think it's the best poem I've written this month, let alone all the other great writers on the site...

If I had a sixer it would be yours, fellow writer, because this was hysterical (and sad that our society blunders this badly). I took your advise and read it aloud. I usually do, but this one was hilarious when read aloud! Thank you for sharing and it's publish-worthy to me!

Hayley, thanks for the fun review and the six stars. Just mucking round with some sound effects, and shaking them up a bit to see what comes out!

PS Don't believe everything you read in the newspaper - or in any of my poems!

Sometimes, it's just plain fun to put words together that clash, clamour, and tumble over one another. Loved you use of alliteration, consonance, and assonance to give the tongue and lips a work-out.
Great idea to put it into newspaper sections to give you the versatility to cover a number of relevant topics to delve into.
Rose.

Thanks, Rose. That's exactly how I wrote this, with no idea where it was going at first. Then I just looked for some common thread and did a bit if rearranging...

This is fun to read with all its alliteration and fun fast rhyme. I like how it breaks the news paper down into its sections and how you include current events. Such as the terrorist attacks and the police shootings from both sides.

Keep writing

Joan

OMG! I read it three times aloud since I blundered and floundered then wondered and wandered. This is AMAZING!!!! You have managed to make the daily "blues" (news) fun and still put it into its proper place - rubbish. I cannot tell you how much fun this was for me and thank you most sincerely for the experience of sharing it with you.

Thanks for the great comments and the six stars.

Sometimes I just jot down random words and phrases because of the 'sound effects.' That's how this piece started out, and then I pulled it together to reflect newspaper sections...

Quite an imaginative bit of poetry here, Steve.
Covered a lot of ground here in delectable rhymes
and tongue in cheek commentary.
Great read.

Really just a bit of a romp, playing with the sounds of words to see what I could come up with. Glad you enjoyed.

How very imaginative! Quite clever and must have taken all day. Some of the lines really hit home, like...

Munich and Nice
do we trust the police

My favorite is International but they're all clever. Weather is surprisingly fun, and I don't really know why. :)

    Thanks, Phyllis.

This started out as a fairly random list of rhyming phrases - the hardest part was marshalling them into some sort of organised context.

What an interesting way to write a poem. You have some great, unusual rhymes in the mix. Amazing that you were able to put them together like that. Must be some crazy vitamin in all those kiwis you eat. :)

'Of Satan or Santa'...too cute, but I believe I like the 'Whither the weather' the best. What a comprehensive listing you have achieved here....blessings...
