This is a pattern for writing that everyone, writer or not, should take on. Chronicling one's life has many purposes that even those who don't write for a living can benefit from. As you say, simply reading how you felt about a place or a situation, years ago, can be as entertaining a watching a classic film and finding things you never knew were there. Good to read this piece.

Hi there,
Your writing has a very nice tone to it which draws the reader in, although I found that the piece itself jumped about a bit.
With a little recreation - I would maybe hyphenate this to re-creation as recreation means play foremost I think.
Being a roving reporter it had its advantages and I took every advantage of the perks - may be better to rephrase this to avoid the repetition.
- perhaps full benefit instead.
Writing one story after another of people places and things - need a comma after people.
catch the viewer's attention. - perhaps reader's rather than viewer's here.
My Grandpa, he used to have a saying - seems old Grandpa may have been guilty of a spot of plagiarism there! LOL
When it comes to writing there is a lot to be said about writing - ironically this sentence doesn't actually say anything. The following sequence also appears to have little to do with this statement and should probably in in a paragraph of their own.

I like the "homey", musing to oneself, journaling style of this piece about journaling. It makes perfect sense to present this topic in this way. There was good advice, too and that made it a worthy entry for this contest.

Very valid points that you raise. To live one's passion is the greatest gift of all. The beauty in writing is that it allows one to carry the passion in almost every realm of their life, to any destination, and garner inspiration from every situation. The written creation is limitless and a manifestation of our greatest gift, the power to create. You are one lucky specimen to recognise this immense benefit and moreso to be grateful for the gift. Keep on keeping.
Jo :-)
