This happened close to 30 years ago and Yet I remember these people ,all of them as people who are just people. That is what it is all about.

Before I posted my own entry, I read the ones already entered, and considered reconsidering getting into this issue. "The Waitress" sounded (and is, I'm sure) authentic, empathic and non-judgemental, and the writer presents as the kind of goodhearted, down-to-earth, with her head-screwed-on-the-right way kind of person FansStorians really go for. She likes everyone. And this is well-written, too!
If the entries weren't anonymous, I think I would have decided to sit this one out. (and probably would have voted for your work).
It turned out that I made the right decision not to do either, because I got lucky and tied for first.

I am so glad you wrote too. That is what this site is about. I have learned more here since February when I joined than I ever did in English Class. I love the different opinions the different styles and it brightens my day each morning. Also the prompts, I would not have thought to write about what happened to me 30 years ago if we hadn't had the contest. Just like the Challenge City one. I have no idea where that story came from until I started writing it. May I become your fan? I would love that. Thank you for believing in me.

BAM! Written with compassion and wisdom and free of the pompous assed attitude the church group in your restaurant displayed, as well as a few here on FS. Some of the best people I know are gay. They fight battles we can't fathom. "There but for the grace of God go I" is something everyone should think quietly before spouting off or judging a situation or a group of people that are different from themselves. Embrace diversity! Beautiful story well narrated.

Diversity is wonderful. As a teacher I know that so well. I love the way these contest prompts make me think. That was a memory from 30 years ago and yet the people were alive to me when I started to write about them. You and others on this site are helping me every single day. Thank you so much.

I just finished an essay on Jehovah's Witnessses being allowed to sit outside our library.(Will post it tomorrow) The behavior you describe might describe them or other organized religions who interpret the Bible to fill their needs. You are a born story teller. So glad you won the contest.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio. Had two gay friends, one male the other female. They were scorned because of who and what they were. I got critised because befriended them. One of the guys, who I never liked, made a comment about me and when my buddies pulled me off of him, they took him to the hospital.
In 1985, I moved to Las Vegas. I came across a number of gay guys. I had several of them working for me in the casinos, they were good to me and fun to be around. I met a true transgender, her name was Kim. She told me about herself and found her interesting. The next time she came to town, I asked to dinner. We had a great time and we developed a great relationship. Kim cried the night I told her that I was retiring and moving back to my hometown after 27 years. I still miss her.
Why I am telling you these things because I have never judge these people and never will. My faith in God will not let me.
I really like this story and how you were with each group. I want to thank you for sharing this story and to congratulate you with winning that contest. I see why!
