Yes, this has become the norm for many societies. I feel for those who are in this position, both the elders and their family members. It can't be easy for either of them. That said, I think many elders could prepare themselves better by not "retiring" from life so early. Stay busy, stay useful, and stay lovable. Being a cranky elder who does nothing but rock in a chair while barking out orders isn't really in anyone's best interest. (Love he picture, by the way.)

Well, that is indeed the dark side to Christmas. The Bible commands us to honour our parents. These days many people have fallen away from Christianity, so they think that they do not have to obey the Lord's criteria. We have a free will to exercise on earth, but eventually our life ends here, and then God decides.
Best wishes in the contest! I reckon this story will be a strong contender.

It is a shame when family turns one of their own out, especially when they would not even exist if it were not for that person. You are right, it is not right. Why does it happen to the nice people? It is lucky she has such good friends.

Such a sad story. My grandmother died at 97 and my mother at 90. Neither of them spent a holiday by themselves. So sad the way old folks are treated these days. And my wife and I are old folks now ... real close to 70 years old.
If this is the new way, I'm damned glad I grew up with the virtues of the old ways ... respect your elders, be kind to your neighbors, don't turn your back on a person in need, etc. I'm proud to be old-fashioned in those ways.
This was a real eye=opener of a story. Good for you for bring the plight of seniors to the attention of us all. It's shameful! But ut was an excellent write!!
Best to you, my friend ...

Hi, Country ranch writer.
This story is written under the fiction category but reads with such truth. Sadly, much of what you've written is a reality for many elderly people. I don't understand how family members can treat elderly members like disposable items but know this kind of thing happens often.
Instead of cherishing whatever time is left, her son showed such ugliness! You described this well in your story. One day, his actions will come back to haunt him. Fortunately, Sally Mae has good friends who are by her side.
Best of luck in the contest. This is a great entry.

I could see my sister doing this to my parents but I couldn't. My parents would go and get my grandma and great grandparents out of the nursing home and bring them over for Christmas and stuff. You can't just throw them to the curb. I'm glad you're her friend and give her a hug for me. If you want I can send her a Christmas card. I really like that idea, let me know

First of all, my friend - your notes - careful - you call this flash fiction but it seems that it is a true story, (which shows it's well-written fiction) and then it looks even more true because of your notes.
Next - separate the paragraphs with a hard return between them - it attracts more readers when the read doesn't look 'bulky'.
Finally - add "have" here:
"It is a crying shame what they (have) done to her."
EXCELLENT! Gripping from start to finish!

This is terribly tragic. If it is any consolation, it is almost guaranteed that her son will reap what he sows. His own children will probably reject him maybe even at an earlier age and even more ruthlessly. Was she put into a home at least? Some Senior Centers are lovely and they are treated with respect and find new friends.

This story reads like non-fiction. It is obviously close to an experience in some manner because I can feel the raw emotions in the pen. You bring something different to your style of writing...I sense the love of outdoors and the love for human kind.
Peace...Happy Holidays!

why would I be angry?

Thought you might have gotten angry because I asked why do you want to be my friend? I didn't recall you reviewing any of my posts. But you must have...why else would you request to be a fan.
-
I am so sorry I neglected to answer but I feel we here on faN STORY should share our ideas although we dome time don't agree eye to eye but we are family and family here is something to cherish. you don't get rich here only in friendship and that in itself is richness.

A definite solid contest entry as I have seen it over and over again.
It is up to the ones that are not family to make the lost ones feel wanted.
Not fair
