Congratulations on your win. I knew you had it as soon as I read your entry. It was very well written and easy to read. I loved the way you ended it.

I look forward to reading more of your work.

I really like this story as it brings back bitter-sweet memories of a similar relationship I had growing up. You have really made us CARE about Susie, the narrator, and the-boy-she-could-not-have, Danny. Each scene is beautifully paced and we get to SEE how this relationship slowly evolved over the years. I like how the last scene ends, allowing the reader to coo, "Maybe .. . ?" This story is poignant, not saccharine, and thus appeals to a wide audience. So well done, I wish I had written it myself!

Many long term romances start out as puppy love...
Some even turn into a long term marriage...
This was a nice story, but take a look at all of the 'down the street' used. I think the story could improve if you used different ways of meaning -- 'down the street.'
I found this word error... *Mama would ask about (out) muddied clothes.

I never loved any man the same way that I loved the boy next door... But I wouldn't give up my husband for all the gold on earth...

Nice contest entry and best wishes...

Author: I loved this story. Didn't have a comparable experience but in my imagination something similar. You have written a good story, easy to read. Kept this reader eager to read the next sentence, paragraph, hoping they ended up together. I think they finally did. livelylinda

Sometimes a happy ending makes us feel better while we live ordinary lives--especially the writer. Thanks.

Sounds as if jealousy ruled and won out. Gender gap. It happens and you explained it well. Poor pretty girl who was being a typical teen and hated by her younger peer.
I find no fault in the way this is written. Thanks for sharing.

For teenage girls, every emotion is stretched to its utmost limit. Thanks.

I thought this was a most accomplished story. I vividly felt the narrator's agonies. I suspect you must be in with a good chance with the contest. Good luck with it.

This is a well told story of unrequited puppy love. Oh, the childhood sweethearts that never and almost were...and maybe still can be? You develop the characters expertly. The longing comes through, and the resignation to do the right thing. Best of all, the hope that not all is lost and the best may be realized even yet.

Thanks so much for your very generous review and stars. I think we all have someone in our past that we wondered about, thinking about how life might have been different.

Very true, but I do remember as a teen how filled with high drama and excrutiating detail and torture helped fuel my emotions.

How I wish there was a Danny out there for me, but sadly, no. This is all fiction. Thanks for the stars. Your review humbles me.
