G'day mate. That is one grat story, it is so easy to read and follow that even I could read it. Don't you just hate that look they give you when they know that you have to do what you have to do, thank God they can't talk. Cheers, great stuff, Fez

I've been gone for awhile....logged in and saw a story from you and I was excited to read it. I was taken back as you and I have always had so much family history that is alike. My son, recently, had to take our Max to the back of the farm and put him down......the whole family continues to be upset, but share dog stories together. He grew up with my grandsons.
I read about your dad's death and again, I feel like I lived the very same story. The dad getting crippled, our mom's destroying their health to take care of him at home, all the sudden trips to their home with each crisis (my trip was only four hours) hiring people to come into the home to care for him, one last emergency room visit and forcing a placement in a nursing home/rehab center, I know the look you saw in your dad's eyes......heartbreaking to see. I am so glad your dad could still talk and was a parent to the end......letting you know he wasn't afraid of death.....
I find nothing wrong with this story and it is much appreciated, no matter where we live or how we live, the important things in life are connections we have with all living creatures and people.
Now that I am back....I promise to be more critical with other stories....this one just was too close to home.
I am so sorry about the passing of your dad.

How terrible about the dog being shot, but every dog has his day. Same with us human folks. Sometimes you eat the bear and somedays he eats you. Dying is as mich part of life as living, and we all need to pray for the dead as well as the living. Good short story.

This is a sad story. I know the sad look as I have had to put a few dogs down in my time. It is a heartbreaking look they give you and something you never forget. Great story and thank you for sharing.

Facing death. It's not easy, even when it's an animal. I think they know, too.

Sorry to read about your Dad's passing. That's always a hard one. I have to admit I chuckled when you told about asking him: "Why? You going somewhere?" It's so very human, Bill.

You and your wife are good, kind people. It's not easy seeing someone through their final struggle when you live so far away and have your own family obligations.
Funny you should note that Jeffrey Stone's story inspired yours. That was my first thought when I opened the post.

You're a wonderful storyteller, Bill. I really enjoyed reading it.

This is beautifully written, deeply moving, and filled with so much love. To be surrounded by family when you time comes is all I ask for. I recommend you red Spiritual Echo's recent post about an old woman reflecting on her life. It is superb and I am sure you will find it superb.

I read this wonderful story yesterday but had to wait until I had the 6 it deserves. Bill, if you haven't sent this to The StoryTeller, I'd suggest it. It's exactly the kind of excellent work they like to publish.

Check for a missed apostrophe in Dukes. I don't remember where, but it's the only nit I can pick in the entire piece. Beautifully done. :) Nancy

Dear Bill, Thank you for sharing this story with us. I am so sorry about your dad. My dad turns 85 on Feb 8th. We had such a nice Christmas with him because all of his kids, grandkids and great grandkids were there. Then just 6 days later his 6 year old great granddaughter had the stroke. The memories you share with us are precious. I am so glad you have them. Thanks for writing, Shirley

My father was doing the same thing and we finally convinced Mom to put him in a nursing home. Dad is angry with her, but she just couldn't take care of him any longer. She sits with him everyday, now.

"Come here dog." (comma before dog)

Thanks for reading Barbara and for the spot. I'm convinced that my dad was on his way to kill mom. Regards, Bill

That was very moving. I watched as my mother's health went down rapidly. It was hard to watch a woman who loved to travel and yearned to sky dive dwindle down to a woman who couldn't walk across the room with out sitting and needing oxygen. This was very sobering. Gretchen

Thank you Gretchen - if you were moved, I was successful. It is sobering to watch parents and realize you're right behind them. Warm regards, Bill
