There is a lot of good advice in this article. Genetics plays a big part in our aging as well as how we take care of ourselves. The one thing you have said here that I agree with more than any of the other things is. That you keep your mind active and never stop learning. I love being on this site and interacting with the other writers here. Age is a mind set, what age is your mind set at... John

Thanks so much, John, for your review and comments. I agree that genetics do play a part in our aging process. My mom is 88 and is going strong. But I do know that our lifestyles and habits can disrupt those genetics in a hurry. My brother for instance has been a smoker and drinker for most of his life and he is now an "old" 66 year old. Can hardly walk across the room without getting out of breath. I am happy too that we have this wonderful sight to interact with other writers. It is way cool. I also definitely agree that age is just a number and that our mind set makes all the difference. I still feel 45 in my mind! 8-)

"M. D." threw me. This is very well written with some aged old advice. We only as old as we think we are. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words.

Hi, Karen! How have you been? This article says you are fine, I think. LOL..I love some of your notations in this piece:

"or do they move as if they are swimming in a sea of molasses?"

And: "And then, before you go to sleep each night, count at least five things you have to be thankful for."

So good to see your writing again. Sorry, I have missed so much...still busy preping for the release of "Fatal Beauty" on February 26, 2015. But I will be back with a new Cleve adventure before long. Stay well. (I agree with all you say in this piece and I actually do it all, including working out at the gym four days a week....I am 76...77 on November 15th. LOL...Bob

Hey there, Bob! So good to hear from you. And yes, I am doing good! Thanks for the high review and pointing out your favorite notations.
Congratulations with the publication of your "Fatal Beauty". I can't wait to purchase a copy and tell everyone I know this author. Also happy to hear that Cleve will be back for more adventure. He's a great character! Take care and Keep on keeping on - at the gym, too. lol

A surberb essay. I hope everyone who read has employed your suggesstions. Many of your ideas, I now used. I marveled at your quotations, especially that of Lincoln's. I am very glad you were a winner, most of all you gave the elderly reasons to live.

I enjoyed this piece. Growing old is not for the weak. We must be strong. This is a good reminder for us to take care of ourselves and others. Serving others, and a positive outlook on life full of gratitude for what we have, is a good potion for aging gracefully, with dignity and a long life.

Well I can certainly appreciate this piece in its entirety. I just had my 50th Birthday this month and like many others, I just don't feel my age. God Bless!

I Like the way you wove the sayings of different personalities throughout to this piece. My mom who has Alzheimer's is sitting close by doing word search. Proving that even brain exercises can't prevent that disease, but maybe slow it down.

Sorry that your mom is dealing with the awful disease of Alzheimer's. I pray someday for a cure. I have had both friends and family members affected by it. Thanks so much for your review and may God Bless.

I'm getting up there, and all these questions have occurred to me too. I found this helpful, so I can feel a little better about my age. :-). I always thought I would age gracefully, but, it's not always easy.

Thanks again!

It is not easy, but it is manageable if we are at least aware of the little things we can do to help ourselves stay "fit". Thanks so much, Edward, and God Bless. 8-)

Between looking young and thinking young, I will choose the former - because what and how you think makes you what you are and will be. I might add that this is, as long as you think with optimism and positivism.

I agree that it is the lack of movement that contributes most to rapid aging. This, plus an altered life style and diet. These days many are tied down in a sedentary position because of their jobs, their leisure and play activities. Children of long ago enjoyed outdoor games, ate home-cooked food and slept early. Compare this with today's computer and gadget games, fast food, and late nights.

Abe Lincoln's words do not seem to fully jive with your objective of living a long, fruitful and active life. It describes more of a quality life. If the last sentence had read "Its the life in your long years" then I fully agree. As it is, I see it as a "live and let live" sort of life no matter how short or long.

Thanks so much, Dennis, for your review and thoughtful comments. I think Old Abe's quote does refer to the quality of life, enjoying each and every moment. But you can't do that if your body and/or mind wears out. Some people live a long time but are so miserable that they wish they were dead. Agree also with your "live and let live". 8-)
