A fine set of observations about free will. If we are simple robots, then our existence seems without purpose or design. If that's all there is, to our belief, why go on?

Your lines nicely rhyme and connect well. One great believer in the coincidence of creation, recently admitted that he now thinks that there hadto be an intelligent 'spark' at the beginning! If so, that implies 'fee will' and would appear to follow through with the intelligent beings we are.
Ok another sermon...

but are our lives so disengaged,
a script writ on another's page,
that we don't have the final say
in whom we love or wars we wage?

some say we are fated, and destiny is mapped out for us. I believe we create our own destiny. We be what we see.

Well written
Mary

Of course I have no more stars they give us so few.
I love the words to your poem it is so true.
I see people putting on an act every day which is a shame.
Thank you for sharing.

Hello there~!
What a beautiful poem.. and an equally beautiful picture. I loved the reference to Shakespeare's works. My favourite stanza is definitely the last one!
Well done!

JazakAllah Khair~!

This is a good subject; many have said that life is a stage and we are all it's players. If our life is planned out, how boring. I think god gave us free will and we choose which path to follow. Well done friend.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

In your characteristic style you logically present two theories.'Stuff made on dreams' and world being a stage on one side and Longfellow's "act in the living present' to leave 'footprints on the sands of time',on the other. It is an ongoing debate between fatalists and 'determinists'(i hope I am right in its definition). Our Karma theory is very akin to fatalism ,but one can't close one's eyes to the fact that we just can't 'not act' because our entrances and exits have been pre-determined.If we act then we are the masters of this universe, aren't we? Our actions, then, would determine the course of our life.I don't know where I am in this, but fatalism has one use -it can prevent one from becoming depressed.
My friend's daughter was a very vivacious girl ,very good in studies and the captain of state women's cricket team. While enjoying herself on the beach with her friends ,a wave knocked her down and she just could not get up. This freak incident had her paralysed from neck downwards. After a few angry years ,she came to the conclusion that 'this was pre-determined'.Now she works with a voice activated computer and paints with the brush held between her teeth. It breaks my heart every time I look at her .I have been wanting to write about her in fanstory but somehow i kept running away from it.last stanza reflects everybody's angst i suppose. Enjoyed this poem very much.

Sanku, thank you so much for your generous and thoughtful response to this poem. Thank you, also, for sharing that story about your friend. I do hope you write about her. Brooke

I quite enjoyed the philosophy you have explored here which seems to ask the age old question -Why am I here?
The poem is thought-provoking and poses some quite interesting questions.
The chain rhyming is effecting at fully engaging the whole
combination of concepts for the easy perusal of the reader
by assisting the flow of ideas from one stanza to the next.

Seken, thank you for your positive comments. Since all the comments are positive, could I ask for clarification of the 4 rating? What would you like to see improved? Brooke

I'm so sorry Brooke. Please accept my heartfelt apology. I must have tapped the wrong line.
Your poetry is always exceptional and I would have awarded a six if I had one to give.
Thank you for being so gracious.
Again, I am so sorry and I will amend that right away.:) Shirley

thanks so much, Shirley - this is why I always ask when the comments and rating don't seem to match - you're not the only person who has ever made this mistake. I've made it myself!

This takes me back to debating with realists in college philosophy classes. An endless unwinable argument! Great piece and I agree with the logic completely. I have free will because I say I do. She's an excellent photographer. Love that shot. mikey

This is great, Brooke. I am ups4et with the presidents speech tonight. I don't know what the answer is, but really question if this is a wise course to follow. I guess we'll see. Have a good night~Debbie

Debbie, thank you so much :-) I would hate to be the guy in charge right now - it's like any choice he makes will be wrong - not enough response, too much response? Brooke

Yes, I agree. We have let the world get to the point that I'm not sure there is a good way out of it. Have a good day, my friend~Debbie

If you haven't been to Ashland, Oregon, it would make a fine family trip where both you and Miranda would enjoy more soliloquies. Or, maybe the next time you come to California you could include the Will Geer theater in Topanga Canyon, Theatrium Botanicum, not far from Encino. Miranda's sunset photo is a wonderful introduction to your philosophical reflections. I enjoyed your references to the Bard's lines along with your rhymes and "stage/script/puppeteer" metaphors. Cheers- Joan
