This is heart wrenching. The personal reference really brings it home. This is a personal thing if not directly then indirectly. But, it is always directly for someone and when you take the numbers it becomes an overwhelming amount of grief for a world to bear all the time. That last stanza is heart breaking especially when read while looking at that stone monument. Wow. Great piece. mikey

Dear Tony - This is such a heartfelt poem for all soldiers who have served.
My grandfather never spoke of his time either, and I have always had a deep passion for history. Yet still his silence lived on, I was never sure either...though I was a child, I always have wondered about his time and his legacy that seems somewhat lost with him....Loved your poem, well penned, great word choices, strong rhyming throughout it.
Thanks for sharing.
Maureen

Thanks, Maureen. An overwhelming number of responses have mentioned a parent or grandparent this could relate to. I hadn't expected it to strike such a common chord. So glad that you, too, we're able to relate to it. Best wishes, Tony

What a great poem. I love everything about it. The story is so sad, yet so true. I see no changes needed. I believe it is the way war changes a person. My father never spoke of his time in war. It must have been horrible. I love history and reading about historical things Thanks for sharing such a personal piece.

Hi Tony, this is a wonderful tribute to the 'Brooding soldier' to your Father and all those men who died in the war to end all wars!. beautifully written with a flow that is so smooth it could slide off the page.

Totally awesome, from the boy playing a toy war, to the game progressing to real tanks and equipment, to the dry drowning, of one taught not to cry. Most painful, are the tears we never shed...just so beautiful! Blessings...Judy

Simply beautiful and hauntingly true. We think we do so much good by those words, buck up, be brave, but the aftermath is too often summed up in your closing line. Loren

I like your story, Tony, with an impactful about the need for boys to be brave and hold back those tears.

Your poem is a wonderful read with a nice flow. You've made good use of alliteration and enjambment. I like the first line with its repetition:

Such tears of laughter tear of joy

Thank you for sharing a well written poem, Tony. Alana
