Ingrid, this is exceptional . Congratulations on third place....it should have been first place. You speak for so many of us with eloquence...your choice of anecdotes to deliver your message are so unique ( do you think the queen ever has an itch). You and I ponder the meaning of life, we reflect and we soldier on. I connect to you and your writing.

You honor me with both stars and kind words. Thank you very much. We get far more reflective as we age, and sometimes I wonder if suddenly everybody had a life expectancy of 100+ at what age we would be permitted reflection.

Hello Ingrid....-smile- ...I'm sorry I missed this...astonishing writing....ah...the point....yea me too sometimes....and I wonder back to Words heard long ago repeated often enough....but rarely seen alive....but you do...see it....become it even...and it stands out amongst small...what if each created life was measured by the life it blessed....what if every time its done God looks at you and smiles...nodding in favor. I believe these our our crowns....our offerings of love to be placed at His feet...in the coming age.....He is much bigger than the shallow minds of Sundays best dressed to hate.......trust yourself...you've done well so far. love michael

Maybe we should erase borders and cling to each other's strength. there's no question, I haven't done well on my own.

I love the story. We all have doubts about the after life. A bad childhood hangs onto us for the rest of our lives. It makes us doubt any good that we may had done. God does not seem real to a battered child. Great work. Good luck in the contest.

It's tough to find love and acceptance in a black and blue world.

This story is well written. It's really more of an introspective essay than a story. The part about reincarnation was interesting. Most people who believe in reincarnation think they were someone famous in their previous life. Few think they were a skullery maid. Interesting perspective.

It was an essay and FS pulls from both essays and stories for the SOM nominees. Thanks for the read.

Ah, Introspection to the max. A constant striving to answer that age-old question on the Meaning of Life.

Is there is a god, a panoply of gods, or none at all? On a more personal level ... why should I care?

At the cessation of this existence, is there another? One by chance or dependent on the content of this one? Think a moment about how we, all of us, would change if there WERE proof of that concept.

We'd become much like vegetables, all trying not to harm or annoy our fellows. We'd avoid evil in thoughts or actions, all without any concept of what those supposed supreme beings even consider evil. Evil acts in one society can be the height of propriety in another. Look at the ancient Spartans. A real man had a wife in order to sire kids, and a nice young butt-buddy for sex. And to the South Seas, where the best way to honor your Granddaddy was to eat him after death.

Ah, Introspection to the max. He-he.

Sure, it was introspective piece and not a contest entry to anything. Somehow eating grandpa doesn't do anything for me.

As to believing the world would change if we felt inter-connected, the reward for the altruism would need to be immediate as would the retribution for sinning against the 'whole.' If not immediate, there would always be those that they could escape punitive actions and even among the do-gooders, there might be some resentment that they remain one bloom in a field. Thanks for your comments.

This is a thought provoking essay. Everyone who goes through a mid-life crisis ponders some of these type questions. The discussion builds nicely and shows a lot of depth. The ending sentence anchors the piece and brings it to an appropriate conclusion.

You point out some frustrations with problems in our earth journey, Spiritual echo. Things are far from ideal in our lives and circles.
Sometimes it seems we have no purpose, though we slave and cope and stay the course.

You have some good philosoophy. It seems you have a confidence in god, yet still wonder.

That's not unique to human experience.

I think between the two enough's in the first line, a better punctuation is a comma...just my thought

I absolutely know it would be easy--is the absolutely absolutely necessary?

For a while, when I was still seeking answers, I cottoned up to the notion of reincarnation - you do know that Origin, one of the Ante-Nicene Father of the Christian Church taught Reincarnation as a pert of Christianity. . .

You sat pondering this one, I see. I love when you empty the contents of your mind (well, some of the contents anyway) and share them with us. You were no scullery maid, Ingrid. You were Boudicca or maybe Godiva. You fought for recognition in a man's world, and you got it.

The queen itches, especially when she wears tweeds. She farts, too, but they're royal farts so that's okay.

nevertheless is one word.

And you rock.

Love Av

I want to drink tea at the boathouse and look at bay pictures, collect snapshots of a woman falling in love again and bear witness. Thanks for the stars.

You're right--can't even get through the laundry. I failed miserably at being the hired help.

Do you mean baby pictures? We can do the boathouse one day next week if you like. Afternoon tea, la-di-dah!

As I read this, I began to feel not sad but the Monday blues? I think you underestimate yourself. So, what if are names are not known by millions of people? God knows your name. He has always known your name whether you were one of the millions who lived as Cleopatra. By the way,she didn't have it so good; sleeping to the top, watching back stabbing(literally relatives) and don't forget the snake bite. In the end the journey is to seek answers, find them and go deeper. I enjoyed reading work such as this because it makes one take a breath and think.

And I write these philosophies or musings, not because I'm expecting answers, but rather talking out loud. Who in our lives really wants to listen to our dribble? They're more interested in what we did or bought than what we feel. thanks for the visit.
