Fantastic poem. Great rhyming and rhythm and a fun story too! I'm sure we've all met a boy like him...what a rascal! I love the ending - very clever.

    Thanks again - yes, this piece is more my normal style!

    One reviewer asked how I'd got to know David Cameron so well...

Hi Steve,
When I first joined Fanstory back in June of 2010, I wrote a lot of children's poetry. I was very lucky to be a finalist in the 2013 Writers Federation of New Brunswick competition/children's literature category. So it was so nice to see that you write some children's poems too. I loved this one, "Bullivant Bradley"... good alliteration there. One of my poems is called "Bartholomew Beckingham". It's such fun to make up a character in poetry or prose. In verse after verse, you polish this bully into a beaming Prime Minister in the end. I loved that! In doing so, you described politicians very well. They're crooks. Same as bankers, real estate agents, and lawyers!
I especially liked this verse,
"He teased all the dogs and he pulled the cats' tails,
Tormented the girls and then laughed at their wails;
And Bullivant then started in on the boys;
He called them bad names and he broke their best toys."
Good meter and rhymes make this an excellent contender for the contest.
cheers
Kimbob

    Thanks, Kimbob

    I think quite a few of the children's poems I see on FS are a bit timid. I could have ended this as a nice moralistic tale with the bully getting his come-uppance, but where's the fun in that.

    Sadly, the voters felt this was too adult for this contest....

They say she'll be better in one or two years!) - love it!

Oh, what a hoot! Read like a rhyming Victorian cautionary tale for children .. quite R.L. Steven-esque!

You are in your element once more, Steve.

My best wishes in the contest. Hope you win - again!

    Thanks, Sonali - disappointing result in the booth.

    I am actually thinking of embarking os a series of cautionary tales a la Hilaire Belloc but brought into the 21st century. I have one so far, but it hasn't been seen on FS yet.

Okay, absolutely loved this and can only offer a virtual six.

I smiled and laughed throughout this great read. Rhyming was terrific and the ending was absolute fun. Not only great for a kid - but for this adult it was a wonderful afternoon diversion!

Thanks so much...AT=/

kiwisteveh: Oh, how much fun can one children's poem be? I giggled and laughed and wondered how my two year old great-grandson would like this poem read to him. I'm sure he would have comments. . .probably about the beans in the ears. . .The last line is really for the adult reader - and there's a good laugh! Great job! livelylinda

    Thanks, Linda - do you remember the rather silly old song, 'My mother said never put beans in your ears'?

    Yes, this may have failed in the contest because it wasn't just for children.

Ahaha...one of the best children's poems I've read on this site...great!
I didn't expect the ending...he became the PM?! Wow!
The rhyming was absolutely perfect..Splendid!
Oh and..in the last stanza, 2nd line,should there be a question mark at the end? was it intended? Doesn't really seem right..
Anyway..great job! God Bless~!

Very, very clever. I loved this, and chuckled all the way through, but especially when I read the last line. I only wish I still had some sixes to give as this brilliant poem deserves it. Sorry, but a virtual six will have to suffice. Your humorous, well-penned poem was a pleasure to read, and the artwork was a perfect choice. Well done! :-)
