Hi and a belated welcome to FanStory.
Thanks for the congratulations.
This piece is far from typical of my work - I'm not usually so serious! :o)

Well said, my new friend, well said.
They do this in His name? And sadly they justify their actions with this.
What a great piece.

Thank you, my new fan.
Just one of the random thoughts circulating in my brain.

I see how you would think that, but when I view history and wars of men, I see greed as the foremost reason, and religion or differences whatever they be, as a useful excuse.

Could be... there are still a lot of wars, even today, that are about religion. And even if it's only an excuse, I guess you'd have to say it is 'in His name'.

Good use of the abcb rhyme scheme. Good end rhyming with maim/name. Good alliteration with they/this. Although this is one stanza it contains a message that clear, truthful and to the point.

Well expressed, and it is true, religion has been the cause of many a bloody war. Like the question in the last line, it really makes the reader think.
I can't agree with the sentiments expressed though, no-one who really understands the true message of God and his undying love for us could perpetrate such horrors in His name. It is unfortunate that fanatics and clever politicians hold such sway over the impressionable masses.
I might be persuaded to fight for my country, but never in His name!

and all reasonable people would agree with you, which raises the question of why there are so many unreasonable people out there stirring up hatred in the name of their religion - and not just different religions but different sects and branches of the same religion.

Well said. I agree with you completely. I don't know what else to say, Steve, without pulling out my soap box! It is simply not logical, what one man will do to another and claim to be acting in the name of a god they believe in.
It boggles my mind.

Religion is an old pr technique. If it's in God's for surely you are on their side. How could go against God? One must think and not accept what's being told. Nice rhyming for this short piece. Well done! Les

Amen, brother. It's the reason I left my church (the one and only congregation I had ever belonged to!). The Bishop shipped off our very forward-minded, conscientious, thoughtful, inclusive, SPIRITUAL (as opposed to religious) pastor with some shmo from a podunk little right-wing, exclusive, hate-minded town, who had the audacity to criticize Obama (in the guise of prayer!) for expressing the sentiment of inclusiveness in the White House. That was the first straw. The second, and last, was when this guy willy-nilly went off on me during a sermon about an unrelated topic for not raising my kids in the church. My husband is an atheist, and I wanted my kids to decide for themselves whether or not to attend church, and they had decided they wanted to spend Sunday mornings at home with their dad. It didn't take me too long to figure out that they were onto something important! I used to study at a theological seminary -- which helped me to learn that it got in the way of my ability otherwise to minister to people who needed me then... I have never looked back.
God is Good. There is no viable line of reasoning that could support engaging in violence in the name of God. Even all throughout the Bible, it is the humans who were the perpetrators of evil and war, and the schizophrenics (prophets) who claimed that God told them it was a good idea. God "told" lots of things to lots of people, such as to Peter, "Do not denigrate and call dirty that which I have made clean." (loose paraphrase from Acts Ch. 10). And, of course, the thing that people forget most of all: humans WROTE all those sacred scriptures, whether or not they believed there was a supernatural voice in their heads dictating. When will humanity get a grip? Thanks for posting this, Steve!

This is what I got from Rama Devi
Religions cut and divide, like scissors, whereas spirituality unites and sews together, like a needle.

I agree...in all of history (HIS STORY) the majority of atrocities have occurred under the umbrella or religion.
This message is lucidly conveyed with fine flow, enjambment and a superb rhyme pair. Good job.
My guru, Amma, always says: Religions cuts and divides, like scissors, whereas spirituality units and sews together, like a needle.
