Mike, hello, I can only give 5 stars I have no ranking, but this was just brilliant! I love your voice and each word you choose illuminated the life of this man who was not just a star, but a guiding star...and you tapped into that and made me take another look at this man's life in a beautiful light! thanks and perfect..
love lots,

OMG! I can't believe you haven't seen this. I do know it is popular with Ray's and Darryl Reads Fans. I had such an identity with him and loved his spirit. Darryl is featured in another poem, titled "Those Ghosts of Rock and Roll." It has been hard writing after Darryl's death.

I thank you for your review and can't worry about ratings myself. Just glad you enjoyed it! Mike

'Ray M--------' is an exceptionally well-written and aptly descriptive poem about a musician who had more than a small share of fame to claim. R.IP. may be out of the question, but his memory will live on in the minds of his many followers and friends. It was a pleasure to review a work of this standard.

aaah - a theremin man! love it, Mike! I enjoyed learning about Ray Manzarek from your write, which sounds almost like a eulogy. However, that being said, at the moment it reads more like a eulogy (i.e. prose) than a piece of poetry - i.e. it lacks the lyricism/ musicality/ rhythm/ rhyme etc which makes "poetry".

There are also quite a few grammatical inconsistencies which hold up the 'flow' eg:

He may have been popular and sold many records,
but earned his Heavenly keep (with each musician
and rockers decided) to add Ray's music and words/
to their collections. - ok - see the bit in brackets? it doesn't make grammatical sense at the moment - but if you changed it to read WHEH each musician ... now you also have to change what's happening with "each" - which means "one of" - so you can't write "each musician(singular) and each ROCKERS (plural) - see what I'm saying?

While Ray may have succumbed to the ravages of time,
he is one person who will never die as once again he
is played to landscape) and inspires/
the listener's cerebral climes

see piece in brackets - "is played to landscape"?? do you mean as background music to landscape? probably not, but I'm missing the meaning here. It would be great if you could clarify for me please?

as for: "the listener's cerebral climes" - well, HERE we have much more of a 'poetic' voice, yes?

Thank you so much for this write - it really helped me appreciate someone I knew nothing about, and realize the musical world is a poorer place without him.

Blessings,
Sharyn

I'm sorry you didn't get to meet this gentleman whom you obviously admired. The Doors have always been a celebrated group, of which Mr. Manzarek was a distinguished contributor. May he rest in peace and may his music continue to uplift and entertain for many years to come. This is a fantastic tribute to him.

I never heard of Ray before. Is he a famous poet? I only know the classics. But he and his work sound quite interesting. Thanks for sharing.

To me, Ray is more like a family member, but he is best known for being the keyboardist of the Doors. I have amended my notes to better reflect his accomplishments. I thank you for your review. Mike

I'll be honest, I have no idea who Ray Manzarek is, but this piece dedicated to him gave me a great feel of who he may have been as a person. Please let me know who this icon is/was...

Oh my gosh.. I feel so friggin' silly!!! I've been in love with Jim Morrison since I was a little, little girl! I can't believe I didn't know that!!! He's the greatest keyboardist that's ever lived!!! You actually knew him!?!

No, I didn't know Ray, but there were times I felt he paid attention to me, but never got back to me for what I felt was his reasons. However, I do have for a Facebook friend Darryl Read who worked with him on a few projects and we are not only mutual supporters of each other's endeavors, we calaberated our talents on a minor project. He's a beat poet and while I totally disagreed with the Occupy Movement, he penned a wonderful poem that expressed sentiments I also shared; but the camp at Baltimore supplied me with wonderful symbolic images the other camps couldn't come close to.

I have a work titled, "In Through The Out, The Doors." I have stories on both Ray as well my dream of Jim Morrison giving me singing lessons and a interesting personal rapport that seemed to come to me.

I don't suggest you fancy Jim in consulting about poetry, I did just that with a love poem I penned and was escorted out of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and told never to come back and boy does that story take some interesting directions as they were aware, they were concluding my biography as well. I know that day, the Spirit of Edgar Allan Poe (Baltimore) pissed himself laughing and felt Jim pat me on the back and call me a, "Poet." Personally I prefer, "Poetic Writer."

Don't feel silly, that's the way Ray wanted it!

I really enjoyed this write. Not sure it was a poem, but I'm not good enough to know. It was clear and intelligent. No words were wasted without losing meaning. I like the message and how you say he was a poet. He created...perhaps it's the same. Great write.

Wow trhanks, I really think what distinguishes the Doors from other bands is Ray did keep the head on the family, and one has to wonder if Jim's embrace of what brought the Doors to an end was a bit of a maturity battle with Ray. Yet, Ray supported and stood up for Jim completely.

I thank you for reviewing this as well the compliments. It makes me feel better, and one of the few honors bestowed is the support of Darryl Read who also worked with Ray to produce music and music/poetry CD's, which was something I attempted to do, but friends and money petered out. Mike

This is a great tribute to a hero of yours. I especially love the last stanza. Did he write the music in the Doors and Jim Morrison the words? The photo caps a great piece of work

The lyrics no matter who wrote them were always considered written by the doors, and I don't think Ray Manzerek took any credit of them. No doubt he wrote all of the keyboard and I feel also composed the music using the talents of the others. What Ray aspoused the most was the fact they drove lighting crazy as they never wanted a light show, which would have gotten in the way. I looked at the doors as Jim and Ray, but what Manzarek heralded was the Jazz improvasation as well the melding of talents and abilities of each band member so no show ever got boring.

I love this review for the million dollar question, and the compliments. Mike

This is a beautiful tribute. It also introduces Ray to
a lot of people that don't know the name. It held my
interest from start to finish. Thank You for your
creation.

In listening to him with, his CD about the spoken history of the doors, you get the sense Ray only thought of himself as Jim's friends and simply wanted to be given credit, as a Doors member. Jim was the same way, as his name was announced, then the doors. He talked to the MC and made him reintoduce the band as simply, "The Doors!"

I enjoyed this review and thank you for it and the compliments. Mike
